About the Norfolk Hunt Horse Show Norfolk Hunt Team Winners - Dedham Horse Show 1954 Mrs. Arthur Lyman presenting the George T. Rice Memorial Trophy to Mrs. Theodore T. Whitney, Miss Jean Neiley and Mr. Jack Lewis The Norfolk Hunt Horse Show was started in Chestnut Hill in 1910 by Nora and Muriel Saltonstall as a day of fun for their friends and neighbors wishing to compete their field hunters. As development spread out from Boston and the show became more successful, the show moved in 1934 to the Dedham Country and Polo Club. The show was run by the members of the Dedham and Norfolk hunts with the assistance of two professionals: Clarence L. Honey Craven and Otis Trowbridge. Honey the ringmaster, (he was also the ringmaster and manager of the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden for over 40 years) was a handsome sight in coaching livery, top hat, and coaching horn and he always had a reassuring word for a nervous competitor; Otis Trowbridge was the announcer both at Dedham and at the Garden. The outside course at Dedham required some attention, as it started on the closely mowed driving range and then went out over rolling hills, stone walls and a ditch and then required jumping back on to the driving range for a last large post and rail. The competitors knew they would have to be at their best to compete successfully against Miss Eleo Sears beautiful bay 1962 hunters Reno, Sidonia, and Pike s Peak. They all were champion hunters at the Garden, Reno twice. Honey Craven described Sidonia as the best hunting horse ever to show at the Garden. Miss Sears horses were trained by Bertham de Nemethy and ridden usually by Joanie Walsh. Other national notables who got their start at this show were Paul Cronin, Fran Cunning Dotoli, Joe Dotoli, Brian Flynn, David and Jim Powers, Dedham Horse Show Committee 1960 Mrs. Colin Cunningham, Mrs. John Reidy, Jane Clark, Nathaniel T. Clark Karen Stives and Peter Wylde. In the 1970 s, the show was moved to its current location to accommodate the increasing numbers of exhibitors. With more space, a better warmup area, stabling and tents for vendors. 1968 Dedham Horse Show 1962 R. Roberts receiving the Mill Farm Trophy from Miss Peabody and Honey Craven. 1962
