HEALTHY SPIRIT, MIND, BODY GRAND TRAVERSE BAY YMCA 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR PROGRAM GUIDE

NEW! LAYOUT We wanted to design our guide to be easy to read and easy to find exactly what you need for every member of your family. So we organized it by age AND by level. AGES 0-5 0-5 AGES 6-12 6-12 AGES 13-17 13-17 LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS 1. YOUTH RECREATIONAL: The recreational level is meant to introduce kids to a sport or activity without a heavy commitment. Give your kids a new experience every month with these monthly programs. 2. YOUTH ACADEMY: Academy is meant to engage kids who know what activities and sports they like and now want to focus on improving their skills and endurance in those sports. 3. YOUTH COMPETITIVE: Competitive level is for the aspiring, serious athletes. This level requires a bigger time commitment and will push kids to achieve their potential in their sport. 4. YOUTH SPORTS: YMCA youth sports are different. Unlike the typical pressure for kids to start at age 3 and put the largest emphasis on winning, we emphasize a different set of values in our sports. 5. YOUTH SPECIALTY: Specialty offerings are programs that don t fit squarely into a category, but nonetheless provide an awesome experience for your kids! 2 MONTHLY PROGRAMS RUN: Sept 5-30 Oct 1-31 Nov 1-30* *No programs 23-26 Dec 1-23 Jan 2-31 Feb 1-28 Mar 1-24 Apr 2-30 May 1-26

SEASONAL SPORTS YMCA YOUTH SPORTS ARE DIFFERENT. UNLIKE THE TYPICAL PRESSURE FOR KIDS TO START AT AGE 3 AND PUT THE LARGEST EMPHASIS ON WINNING, WE EMPHASIZE A DIFFERENT SET OF VALUES IN OUR SPORTS. 1. Everyone plays We do not use tryouts to select the best players, nor do we cut kids from YMCA Youth Sports. Everyone who registers is assigned to a team. During the season, everyone receives equal practice time and plays at least half of every game. 2. Safety first Although some children may get hurt playing sports, we do all we can to prevent injuries. We ve modified each sport to make it safer and more enjoyable to play. 3. Fair play It s about you and your players showing respect for all who are involved in YMCA Sports. It s about being a role model of good sportsmanship and guiding players to do the same. 4. Positive competition Competition is a positive process when the pursuit of victory is kept in the right perspective; the best interests of the children are put above winning the contest. Learning to compete is important for children, and learning to cooperate in a competitive world is an essential lesson of life. 5. Family involvement YMCA Sports encourages parents to be involved appropriately along with their child s participation in our sport programs. In addition to parents being helpful as volunteer coaches, officials, and time keepers, we encourage them to be at practices and games to support their child s participation. 6. Sport for all We offer programs to all children regardless of their race, gender, religious creed, or ability. We ask that our adult leaders encourage the diversity of children in our society and encourage the children and parents to do the same. 7. Sport for fun Sometimes adults can overcomplicate sports or overemphasize winning to the point the sport is more stressful than it is fun. If we take the fun out of sport, the kids may take themselves out of the sport. Remember, the sports are for kids; let them have fun. SEASONAL SPORTS 25
