But Jakob Silfverberg, 22, has four goals through the team's first four games, and his two-goal performance Thursday in the Ducks' 6-0 home-opener rout of the New York Rangers at Honda Center is changing the perception of a deal that looked like a pure salary dump. Silfverberg is around the net and shoots hard, as he showed in the first period by taking a pass crossed to him by Ducks legend Teemu Selanne and blasting a close-range shot past the New York Rangers' Vezina Trophy finalist Henrik Lundqvist. I've been fortunate to play with two great players, Mathieu [Perreault] and Teemu. They're so good at one-on-one battles, it's a matter of me finding

open spots, and they're so good at finding me. I just try to shoot it, Silfverberg said. Silfverberg struck again on a rush that brought Lundqvist out of the net. A Selanne shot hit the post to Lundqvist's left position, and careened out to Silfverberg on the opposite side as he slapped in a shot that gave the Ducks (3-1) a 4-0 lead just 1:27 into the second period. You always want to score goals, Silfverberg said. I've been lucky so far. It's a matter of just shooting the puck. The only other Ducks in the team's 20 years to score four times in the first four games are Selanne (1996) and Daniel Winnik (last season). Good exchange so far given Ryan's $5.5-million salary versus Silfverberg's $900,000. Ryan had four 30-goal seasons for the Ducks. Selanne, retiring after this season, was greeted by an extended roaring ovation from the sold-out crowd of 17,179. Winnik scored as the Ducks produced a dominant opening period, outshooting the Rangers, 17-3, to lead 3-0. I had a good seat for an exciting game, Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller said en route to stopping 34 shots for his 17th career shutout. Ducks defensemen Sami Vatanen and Bryan Allen each matched a team record plus-five goal differential while on the ice. The Rangers (1-3) are opening the season on a nine-game trip before returning to Madison Square Garden on Oct. 28. The building is undergoing a final phase of renovation. They lost at San Jose on Tuesday, 9-2, lost star wing Rick Nash to a head injury, and were subjected to the deafening sounds of six goal horns in the first 40 minutes. Saku Koivu scored on a Winnik assist and Dustin Penner followed a sharp pass from Corey Perry by scoring on Lundqvist. Perry also assisted captain Ryan Getzlaf on the game's first goal. The only negative was injuries. Perreault left the game with an upper body injury. Penner and Ducks center Nick Bonino left in the third with lower body injuries. The Ducks played without right wing Kyle Palmieri (head) and left wing Matt Beleskey (broken left thumb). LA Times: LOADED: 10.11.2013 720602 Anaheim Ducks Ducks dominate Rangers in home opener By ERIC STEPHENS 2013-10-10 23:01:54 ANAHEIM Through the course of their 20 home openers in franchise history, the Ducks have won their share and lost their share. Never have the Ducks sent a sellout crowd home with such an overwhelming first impression to a new season like the performance they put forth Thursday night. Three goals in the first period by the Ducks were followed by three more in the second as they hammered an already embarrassed New York Rangers squad, 6-0, in front of 17,179 at Honda Center. It was only nine days ago when the Ducks (3-1-0) didn t appear to be ready for the season in being as they were on the receiving end of a 6-1 ambush in Colorado. Now that loss is ancient history. I think the first game was a huge wakeup call for us, Ducks defenseman Bryan Allen said. And we realized that we can t just show up. We know we have a lot of skill in this room and some talented players. But unless you work and play the system, it s not going to work for you. Jakob Silfverberg continued his torrid start with two more goals as he joined Teemu Selanne and Daniel Winnik as the third Ducks player in franchise history to open up with four goals in his first four games with the team. Silfverberg slipped a one-timer past Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist in the first period and hammered his second into an open net after Selanne had hit the post. Both chances were golden after Lundqvist vacated the net on ill-fated pokecheck tries. The trio of Silfverberg, Selanne and Mathieu Perreault has combined for six goals and six assists in the first four games. Selanne got his first two points of the season. I ve been fortunate to play with two great players, Silfverberg said. With Mathieu and T, they re so good at one-on-one battles. So for me, it s just a matter of trying to find open spots. They re so good at finding me. Once again, I just try to shoot it. It s been a great mix. Ryan Getzlaf started the rout with a one-timer off a feed from Corey Perry. Perry later set up Dustin Penner s first goal in his return to the Ducks. Penner also assisted on Getzlaf s score. Winnik and Saku Koivu also scored as the Ducks jumped all over a Rangers team that was coming off a 9-2 beating at the hands of San Jose. Jonas Hiller made 34 saves for his 17th career shutout. We were talking about it in (the dressing room), Hiller said. I was excited when I saw the first few minutes. I knew we were right in the game. We were putting pressure on and if you get goals early, it s easy. Especially against a team who didn t have its best game. I don t think it can get any better for a home opener. INJURIES MOUNT The only stains on an otherwise spotless night were the Ducks seeing more forwards go to the training room. Perreault, Penner and Nick Bonino all either left the game early in the third period or didn t play it at all. Penner has an upper-body injury and Perreault and Bonino have lower-body injury. Bonino was hurt while blocking a shot. None of the injuries are serious, Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. I m hoping by tomorrow when all the dust settles and we come to practice, everybody will be OK to go. The Ducks received a small bit of good news on the injury front as Emerson Etem made his season debut. But they re also suffering some attrition among their deep group of forwards. Etem's return from a lower-body injury suffered during the preseason comes as left wing Matt Beleskey has a cast on his left forearm. The Ducks confirmed that is a broken thumb and Boudreau said it would keep him out of the lineup for a week or so. Right wing Kyle Palmieri also sat out against the Rangers as he recovers from the lingering effects of a hit by Winnipeg's Dustin Byfuglien in the Ducks' 3-2 win over Sunday night. The Ducks are calling it an upper-body injury. Palmieri said the injury isn't as serious as the concussion he suffered last season, which kept him out for four games. He has been working out off the ice and skated Thursday before the team's morning skate. I wouldn't say it's in that classification at all, Palmieri said. Just one of those things. Like I said, take it day by day. We'll see how it goes tomorrow. Etem is back after getting hurt against the Sharks on Sept. 20 when San Jose's Raffi Torres ran into him. The young winger said assistant coach Scott Niedermayer was putting me through some rigorous drills to get me back to game shape. I feel like a kid in a candy store, he said. It just feels so great to be with the guys each and every day in the locker room. Sharing the laughs that I missed over the past couple of weeks. Orange County Register: LOADED: 10.11.2013 720603 Anaheim Ducks Ducks are building a franchise to last

BY ERIC STEPHENS 2013-10-09 18:41:00 Henry Samueli still is losing money on the Ducks to the tune of millions that stretch into eight figures. Even billionaires with the most robust of financial portfolios give pause to that amount of red ink. But as he sits in a conference room at Honda Center, the arena his management company runs, Samueli is at ease with where the team he owns sits in the present and beams with hope for the future of the NHL franchise. The goal is to turn owning the Ducks into a break-even proposition even as the value of the franchise continues to rise. In 2012, Forbes estimated that Ducks worth at $192 million, which is $117 million more than what Samueli and his wife paid for the team in 2005. Make no mistake, the co-founder of Irvine-based semiconductor company Broadcom is in good shape financially. Samueli is on the most recent Forbes magazine list of richest Americans (reportedly worth of $1.7 billion). But Samueli isn t sitting on his fortune. The latest evidence of his continued investment in keeping the Ducks and their 20-year-old arena as a viable entity going forward is plainly visible. The finishing touches are being applied to the $20 million Grand Terrace expansion project, and it is on track for an official christening at the Ducks home opener Thursday against the New York Rangers. And the usually low-key Samueli is beaming. I think the fans are going to love the Grand Terrace, Samueli said in an interview with the Register. It creates a whole new destination experience for people to be here before the game. After the game. During intermission. We re excited about the upgrade. The addition to Honda Center didn t bring the NBA team that Samueli covets, but that is just one reason why it was built. As the Ducks celebrate their 20th anniversary, Samueli is banking on many factors that will keep the Ducks as an Orange County institution for generations. His plan for the future starts from the ground up. Upon taking over ownership from the Walt Disney Co., Samueli began to look at the grass-roots level and it involved a lot more than renaming the Ducks practice facility Anaheim Ice. To make further inroads into the Southern California hockey community, the Ducks looked at the Dallas Stars as their model. The Stars built ice rinks in and around the Dallas Metroplex and now own and operate six facilities. Officials with the Stars and Ducks ultimately met and compared notes about building a sport in places where hockey isn t woven into the region s fabric. They had the big picture of wanting to grow the sport and Dallas had done a nice job of doing that, said Art Trottier, vice president of The Rinks. So we kind of wanted to mirror ourselves after that. The Ducks altered their approach to arrive at the same idea. Starting with the Anaheim facility, the team has steadily purchased and refurbished existing rinks in Orange County and is starting to make inroads beyond. The centerpiece of their efforts is The Rinks program, and the Ducks now operate ice sheets in Anaheim, Westminster, Yorba Linda and Lakewood along with in-line roller hockey rinks in Corona, Huntington Beach and Irvine. A new Irvine ice facility in the Great Park remains in the planning stages. It has allowed the club to greatly expand its reach into the youth levels. Trottier said there were nine age-group teams that made up the Junior Ducks programs when he arrived in 1996. Now the growth has become exponential. Nearly 320 teams from the 8-and-under to the 18-and-under levels compete in either ice or roller hockey at the seven facilities between the fall/winter and spring seasons. Approximately 4,000 kids are involved, according to numbers Trottier provided. The youth participation numbers don t include the adult level, which has mushroomed to nearly 500 teams and more than 5,600 players. We were always just concerned about growing hockey just in our building, Trottier said. So it kind of opened our eyes to say, Hey, we ve got to make sure it grows in other buildings or it s not going to be successful. As an arena and as management, we took a different approach. We need to help everybody else and try and grow. Some rinks were either closed (Westminster) or struggling (Lakewood). Trottier said the fear was that if area skating facilities were closing, interest in hockey would eventually fade. The problem now is there aren t enough ice sheets to meet an increasing demand and the ever-expanding Anaheim Ducks High School League is the cause of that. Funded in large part by the Ducks, the league has doubled in size from 14 to 28 teams for this season after starting out with one JSerra in 2008. And the games at Anaheim Ice often have the feel of a Friday night under the lights, with cheerleaders and stands that are often filled. Trottier grew up playing for his high school in his native Michigan and vividly remembers when we played (it was) in front of 1,500 people every night. To him, the experience of representing your school colors is something that can t be replicated. I ll never forget that first game of high school hockey (for the league), he said. This mom, she came up to me in tears and gave me a hug. I m going, What s wrong? She goes, This is what my son s dreamed of, playing for his high school. That kind of hit it off for me. This is working. It s expanded. It s the talk of Southern California hockey. There are other continued efforts the Ducks make to introduce youngsters to the sport. Their Learn to Play program that offers free four-week instruction has had 2,000 new participants over the past two years and their S.C.O.R.E. (Scholastic Curriculum of Recreation & Education) now reaches 40,000 fifth-grade students across Southern California each year. Samueli wouldn t say how much money he has pumped into the rinks and youth programs, but Trottier said it s an easy seven figures and perhaps much more. Craig Johnson, Santa Margarita High s coach, is among those who say the league wouldn t be where it is without the owner s backing. The vision is that these high schoolers will one day become fans and potential season-ticket holders. It s very important for the community, said Johnson, the former Ducks and Kings player. These little hockey players are going to be your future season-ticket holders to support the Ducks to bring people into the game. The more people you get into the game, the more exciting it becomes. The people see it, they love it and they want to come back. It s not a traditional sport out here. So you have to be proactive in recruiting kids into the sport. And they ve done a fabulous job with that. There is no question Samueli wants a day when the Ducks are able to balance their books, and he was among the owners who pushed for a more favorable collective bargaining agreement that needed a 119-day lockout last season to secure. The new CBA also allows them to receive revenue sharing for the first time. But the UCLA graduate and Corona del Mar resident bought the franchise to keep it in local hands and remove any question that it would stay in Orange County. It remains an investment that he hopes to keep within the family for a long time. We re not doing this purely as a business, Samueli said. I have a very successful business that I m involved in at Broadcom that pays the bills. And the Ducks is just part of our give-back to the community. Orange County Register: LOADED: 10.11.2013 720604 Anaheim Ducks Final: Ducks 6, Rangers 0 October 10th, 2013, 9:42 pm posted by ERIC STEPHENS ANAHEIM -- Jakob Silfverberg continued his hot start with two more goals as the Ducks rolled to a 6-0 victory over the New York Rangers in their home opener Thursday night. Jonas Hiller got the start in goal and made 34 saves for his 17th career shutout before an overflow sellout crowd of 17,179 at Honda Center.

The Ducks (3-1-0) have won three in a row since their opening-night loss at Colorado. This one was no contest as they scored three times each in the first and second period. Ryan Getzlaf got his first goal of the season with a one-timer off a feed from linemate Corey Perry at the 5:06 mark. Silfverberg made it 2-0 just over four minutes later with a conversion past Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist off a pass from Teemu Selanne. Daniel Winnik managed to beat Lundqvist from long distance and the rout was on against the Rangers, who were humiliated for a second straight night after taking a 9-2 loss against San Jose. Silfverberg became the third Ducks player to score four goals in his first four games with the team as he drilled the puck into an empty net after Selanne hit the right post. Lundqvist had vacated the net when he misfired on a pokecheck. After Saku Koivu made it a 5-0 lead off one of New York's numerous turnovers, Dustin Penner got his first goal in his return to the team on a set-up from Perry down low. Orange County Register: LOADED: 10.11.2013 720605 Anaheim Ducks The Ducks were rumored to be ready to trade skillful forward Bobby Ryan for several seasons By Elliott Teaford, Daily Breeze Posted: 10/10/13, 10:25 PM PDT The Ducks were rumored to be ready to trade skillful forward Bobby Ryan for several seasons before they finally pulled the trigger last summer. After watching Jakob Silfverberg for four games to start the 2013-14 seasons, you have to wonder why they waited so long. Certainly, any question that the Ducks didn t get enough in return when they shipped Ryan to the Ottawa Senators for Silfverberg, a prospect and a first-round draft pick have been answered. Silfverberg can play, all right. The Ducks did not get swindled. Silfverberg scored two goals as the Ducks built a commanding 6-0 lead over the New York Rangers in their home-opening game Thursday at the Honda Center. Teemu Selanne, the Ducks elder statesman at 43 assisted on both of the 22 year old s goals. Silfverberg has a team-leading four goals and five points in four games. He became only the third player in team history to score four goals in his first four games. Selanne in 1995-96 and Daniel Winnik last season are the others. Selanne, playing his final home opener, hit Silfverberg with a centering pass from behind the goal line on Silfverberg s first goal, which gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead 9 minutes, 17 seconds into the first period. Ryan Getzlaf and Winnik also scored in the opening period. Silfverberg then slammed a rebound off Selanne s shot off the goal post into the back of the net after New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist went walkabout on a broken play only 1:27 into the middle period. Saku Koivu and Dustin Penner also scored for the Ducks in the second. All things considered, a 6-0 lead entering the third period was about as sure as a bet gets. The only question for the Ducks was whether they could maintain their interest long enough and continue to play with enough energy and effectiveness to help Jonas Hiller earn a shutout. The Rangers looked like road kill right from the start Thursday after defeating the Kings 3-1 on Monday at Staples Center, losing to the Sharks 9-2 on Tuesday in San Jose and then getting run over by the Ducks during the first 40 minutes. The Ducks outshot the Rangers 17-3 in the first period and grabbed a 3-0 lead not long after a rousing opening-night celebration, which included video highlights of the club s first 20 seasons in the NHL. Predictably, the loudest cheers during the player introductions were for Selanne. I haven t thought about it too much, but it s going to someone s first home opener and it s going to be my last, Selanne said at the Ducks morning skate, flashing his trademark grin. LA Daily News: LOADED: 10.11.2013 720606 Boston Bruins Giguere stops 39 shots in Avs' shutout of Bruins AP / October 10, 2013 Everything seems to be going right for the Colorado Avalanche so far this season, and new coach Patrick Roy is setting the tone. Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 39 saves in his 37th NHL shutout, and the Avalanche stayed perfect with a 2-0 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. The whole mentality is changing, our whole attitude, Giguere said. We seem to believe in ourselves a little bit more. It is a different voice, and the guys seem to be responding to it right now. The Avalanche are 4-0 under Roy, their best mark since the franchise relocated from Quebec to Colorado for the 1995-96 season. We are trying to make the playoffs and go as far as we can, Avalanche forward Ryan O'Reilly said. We are approaching every game to learn and get better, and right now we are having success and doing it. Giguere, in his first start of the season, made several sparkling saves. His best came midway through the second period when he stoned Patrice Bergeron on a 2-on-1 rush. O'Reilly gave the Avalanche the lead in the final minute of the first period and Matt Duchene sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the closing seconds. Andre Benoit and Duchene assisted on O'Reilly s goal. Tuukka Rask stopped 28 shots for Boston and has allowed only three goals in three games. Boston was blanked for the first time in 72 games. Sometimes you run into a hot goaltender, a team that s playing well... and they did tonight, Bruins coach Claude Julien said. The Colorado goalie tandem of Giguere and Semyon Varlamov has allowed three goals in the club s four wins under Roy, a Hall of Fame goalie during his playing career. O'Reilly put Colorado ahead 1-0 with a power-play goal with 41 seconds left in the first. He threw the puck toward the net and scored through traffic with a shot that Rask never saw. Duchene scored into an empty net with 25.7 seconds remaining after he hit two posts on another rush with under three minutes remaining. Colorado extended its point streak in Boston to eight games (6-0-2). It is the longest current winless streak against any opponent for Boston. Their goalie obviously did a great job, Bruins defenseman Torey Krug said. Shame on us for not scoring. We've got to step it up a bit. The Bruins will play at Columbus on Saturday in their first road game of the season. Colorado will wrap up its three-game road trip at Washington. NOTES: Boston allowed a power-play goal for the first time in eight short-handed situations this season.... Colorado has killed all 12 power plays against.... Bruins LW Milan Lucic received a 10-minute misconduct in the second period for roughing Gabriel Landeskog and knocking him down twice.... Boston has never won an overtime game at home against the Quebec/Colorado franchise.... Cody McLeod played in his 400th game for Colorado.... Jarome Iginla and Loui Eriksson have yet to record a point for the Bruins. Boston Globe LOADED: 10.11.2013 720607 Boston Bruins Patrick Roy returns to Boston for first time as a coach By Amalie Benjamin

October 11, 2013 Claude Julien threw in the line as he was answering a question about whether the lengthy layoff between games for the Bruins had allowed him to do some work for the upcoming Olympics. Yeah, the Olympics, he said. And I spent the last couple of days solidifying the glass between the benches. That, of course, was a good-natured jab at Avalanche coach Patrick Roy, in town Thursday for the first time as a head coach. Roy got into a shouting match with Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau in the Avalanche s opener, and nearly toppled the partition between the benches. He was fined $10,000. I don t expect any problems with Claude Julien, Roy responded when apprised of the quip. Roy added, I have so much respect for him. He s a great coach. When you re in the finals of the Stanley Cup two years in the last three, he deserves certainly a lot of credit and respect. The two have talked occasionally in the past, with Roy requesting advice from the Bruins coach. Every time I spoke to him, at the time I asked him a few questions, called him, he was always available, Roy said. He said, any time you want to talk. It s fun to see guys open up like this with a junior coach. I respect that and I m happy to see him being so successful here in Boston. Roy, who had many memorable battles at the original Garden as a member of the Montreal Canadiens, said it was good to be back in Boston. A lot of great memories, no doubt about it, he said. Roy is now looking to create new memories as coach of the Avalanche, who have started a surprising 4-0-0 with Thursday night s 2-0 win over the Bruins. The Hall of Famer started coaching at the junior level, with the Quebec Remparts, and moved this season to the NHL. I started just being GM in Quebec at the junior level, and there was something missing, Roy said. Just enjoyed [being] around the players. I guess at the junior level I wanted to make a difference in the life of those younger players, and today here I am. I didn t expect to be in that position one day, but I m very happy to be. It s also a good opportunity for me to give back to the fans in Denver who have been so loyal and so great to myself and my family that I just feel that it s great timing, it s a great opportunity. And his players have responded. Center Matt Duchene listed two reasons for the team s quick start. No. 1, the close-knit nature of the group, and No. 2, Roy. We re having a blast, Duchene said. We re having fun. He s great in the sense that when we need a kick in the [butt] he gives it to us, and when we need a pat on the back we get it, as well. It really feels like he s part of our group it s not like coaches, then players. It s everyone together, which is exciting. Forward progress Carl Soderberg skated with the team for the first time since injuring his ankle Sept. 27 in the final exhibition game, taking part in Thursday s optional morning skate. I think it s a start, Julien said. It was good to see him out there and doing at least some line rushes and stuff like that. So, he s progressing well, but obviously not ready to play. Soderberg had been skating on his own before practices this week. Julien anticipated that Soderberg will start practicing with the team on Friday, though he said he wasn t sure whether the winger would be cleared for contact. Eriksson: bad call Loui Eriksson was perplexed after the game by an embellishment penalty he was given at 11:20 of the third period. Eriksson was hooked by P.A. Parenteau, and was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after he went down. I don t know why they called me on that, Eriksson said. He was holding me and I couldn t do anything so I don t know, it was kind of a stupid call by him. The teams played four on four instead of the Bruins going on the power play. Gabriel Landeskog did get called for hooking 36 seconds later, though, so the Bruins did get a four on three, though they couldn t take advantage. Well-timed trade Johnny Boychuk might not be in the NHL if not for the trade that sent him from the Avalanche to the Bruins in June 2008. Boychuk hadn t latched on in Colorado, spending most of his time in the AHL after being drafted in the second round in 2002. He played only four games with the Avalanche before being shipped out. Sometimes it s about being in the right spot at the right time, Julien said. He really had a good year in Providence [after the trade]. At that time we were looking for a right shot and the guy that could be big, strong, and then could shoot the puck, and he had that opportunity. Just talking to him the other day, he even mentioned that at one point Colorado wanted to make him a forward. So that s how far he s come from being a solid defenseman with us to almost being pushed out of the league. In for a checkup Bobby Robins was at the Garden on Thursday to get checked out. The forward injured his knee in an exhibition game Sept. 17 and has not been on the ice since. Robins said he was hoping to get the OK to start practicing... The Bruins were ready to get back on the ice after having four days off between games, but Julien did see the benefits to the time off. We finished late last year, so having a slower start is not a bad thing, he said. But at the same time, when you do start getting into games you get into a bit of a roll. There s no doubt players would rather play than practice, and that s a fact.... Julien said Gregory Campbell has had no problems after recovering from the broken leg suffered in last season s Eastern Conference finals... With the morning skate optional, David Krejci and Milan Lucic opted not to participate. They ve heard me say that often those morning skates can be put aside for all I care, Julien said. I think a lot of it is maybe overrated. And it s hard to get that out of their heads, that they need to skate in the morning. For them, they ll tell you they feel better. So I think with time you ll see less and less of that.... Matt Bartkowski was the Bruins healthy scratch for the third straight game. Boston Globe LOADED: 10.11.2013 720608 Boston Bruins Milan Lucic loses temper in Bruins 2-0 loss By Fluto Shinzawa October 11, 2013 Gabriel Landeskog is no dummy. Landeskog became the youngest captain in NHL history (19 years, 286 days) when the Avalanche stapled the C to his jersey on Sept. 4, 2012. So when Milan Lucic shed his left glove in Thursday s second period and threatened to do the same with his right, Landeskog responded wisely. He kept his gloves glued to his hands and allowed Lucic to rage. Lucic shoved Landeskog early in the tussle, which took place at 19:09 of the second period. After some more jawing, Lucic ended the confrontation by pushing Landeskog again. In the aftermath, Landeskog kept all his teeth, while Lucic lost 12 minutes of action (two for roughing plus a 10-minute misconduct). For the game, Lucic had one shot and four hits in 11:56 of ice time. Absolutely, said Colorado coach Patrick Roy when asked if Landeskog did the right thing. First of all, we don t have anything to prove fighting with him. I don t believe fighting is that important in our game. At the same time, there s no need for Gabe to go into the box for 10 minutes or 15 minutes. We need him on the ice. He s one of our best players. I thought that was smart of him. It s hard to say whether Thursday s outcome, a 2-0 Colorado win, would have been different had Lucic kept his cool. Jarome Iginla ripped off a game-high seven shots. David Krejci created puck possession by winning 13 of 18 draws.

Looch was trying to get the team going, I guess, Patrice Bergeron said. Maybe it was one shot too many. But he s still trying to do his job and get the guys going. But it didn t help that Boston s power line lost a whole lot of muscle for more than half of the third period. You re not going to win that war anyway, whether you complain about it or not, said coach Claude Julien. The other guy s still chirping him and gives him a shot. The referee decides [Lucic] is going to be taking the 10. Certainly not what you want as a coach. An important player like that, you d rather have him on the ice. I thought it was a bit soft, to be honest with you. The flare-up started after Avalanche goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere covered the puck. The initial dustup took place between Krejci and P.A. Parenteau. Lucic checked on the fuss. Landeskog grabbed Lucic from behind. Lucic just about exploded. Landeskog is Colorado s No. 2 right wing. Lucic believed that because his opponent was Landeskog, who is not known for the rough stuff, the referees tagged him with the extra 10 minutes. Had Lucic done the same with big boy Patrick Bordeleau, who had dropped the mitts earlier with Shawn Thornton, the left wing might have escaped the 10-minute smackdown. Just a grab from behind in the face. Just an altercation, Lucic said. I bet you if I would have pushed Bordeleau at the end of it, I don t get 10 minutes. Landeskog has one career fight and had no plans of adding a second to his résumé. It would have been a one-sided fight had Lucic dropped his gloves and pounded away. To his credit, he followed The Code. I don t know. You re going to have to ask him that, Lucic said, when asked if he thought Landeskog might drop his gloves. I was fired up. Unfortunately, I got 10 minutes for it. Lucic s game centers on emotion. When he is playing angry, there is no player who enjoys engaging him in a puck battle, especially near the boards. There s a good chance Lucic will deposit his head through the glass (see Van Ryn, Mike). But it s a fine line to balance. Everybody around the NHL, opponents and referees alike, know that Lucic s kettle can boil over. A team like Colorado can turn that temper into a liability. Referees might be quicker to blow their whistles because of Lucic s reputation. If someone pushed me like that at the end of an altercation, said Lucic, I highly doubt they would have gotten 10 minutes. The Bruins could have used Lucic s frame in front. Giguere (39 saves) had good looks at most pucks. Lucic s net-front presence might have disrupted Giguere s rhythm. What we had to do was get a little bit more traffic in front of a hot goaltender and take his eyes away, Julien said. We didn t do a good enough job of that. When we were in front, even looking from the bench, you could still see the puck. I don t think we took his eyes away. With Lucic unavailable, Julien had to adjust his lines. Daniel Paille replaced Lucic on the first line. Jordan Caron double shifted in Paille s spot on the fourth line. At 11:20 of the third period, Lucic s banishment ended. But at the same time, Loui Eriksson was whistled for embellishment. Thirty-six seconds later, Landeskog was sent off for hooking. On the four-on-three power play, Julien rolled out Krejci, Iginla, Torey Krug, and Zdeno Chara. It wasn t until 16:26 of the third period that Lucic took his first full shift alongside Krejci and Iginla. Lucic responded by barreling over Andre Benoit, then yapping with Parenteau. Lucic also tossed some barbs toward the Colorado bench. Lucic was on the ice when Tuukka Rask was pulled for an extra skater. But Matt Duchene capped the Colorado win with an empty-net goal. By game s end, Lucic was sitting on the end of the bench. As the Avalanche congratulated Giguere, Lucic took a last pull on a water bottle. Then he spiked it. Lucic s temper had no intentions of going away. Boston Globe LOADED: 10.11.2013 720609 Boston Bruins Avalanche stifle Bruins offensive attack By Amalie Benjamin October 11, 2013 The Bruins tried to argue that their five-day break was a positive, allowing them time to practice and work on integrating the team s new members. They mentioned the toll the Stanley Cup run had taken, that some rest wasn t all bad. Their play proved otherwise Thursday night, as a rusty, slow Bruins team was overwhelmed in the first period by the flying Avalanche. Though the Bruins recovered, playing faster, smoother, and better as the game went on, that first period in which Colorado scored a power-play goal was the difference. It was a game that on other nights the Bruins might have won, a game in which they played well enough to win. But the Avalanche had Jean-Sebastien Giguere, 36, turning back the clock with 39 saves; they had the first power-play goal against the Bruins this season, and ultimately they had the 2-0 win in front of 17,565 at TD Garden. It s one of those things where you really have to grind it out, coach Claude Julien said. Some nights goals don t come easy and what we had to do was get a little bit more traffic in front of a hot goaltender and take his eyes away. And we didn t do a good enough job of that. He acknowledged it helps a team when it gets on a roll as the Avalanche are and that it hurts to be off for so long. He said the team was a little rusty. But his team wasn t using that as a reason for the loss. It shouldn t [be], defenseman Torey Krug said. Maybe it did. I don t know. If it did, that s a poor excuse. We had a lot of time off and we were skating every day. So if it did, shame on us. The Avalanche scored twice, the second coming on an empty-netter by Matt Duchene with 26 seconds to go. But, really, this was a 1-0 game, with the Bruins just missing so many times against the vintage Giguere, who was subbing for Semyon Varlamov. I think a shutout is a team thing, Giguere said. We have to be proud of the way that we killed the penalty tonight. It wasn t pretty the whole game but getting two points in this building is a great sign for our team. The Avalanche got the game-winner at 19:20 of the first period, when Andre Benoit sent a shot in from just inside the blue line. Ryan O Reilly tipped it high past Tuukka Rask for the first power-play goal allowed by the Bruins this season. The team had come in a perfect 7 for 7. So it is the Avalanche who remain undefeated on the season, at 4-0-0, with the Bruins suffering their first loss. They were shut out for the first time since Feb. 28, 2012, breaking a streak of 71 games including the entire lockout-shortened season. Earlier in the day, Avalanche rookie coach Patrick Roy was asked whether the game against the Bruins was a measuring stick for his young, fast-starting team. He said his team would be challenged, that it would get a chance to see the areas that still need improvement. There weren t many. They were moving their feet, Patrice Bergeron said. They were first on pucks in the first period, and we were slow getting there. They played a good game from the get-go. But still we ve got to be ready right from the start, because after that I thought we had some good looks in the second and third. But they couldn t get anything past Giguere, including on their three power-play chances. Of course we could have done more, Krug said. The goalie stopped us, all our good chances. We ve got to do a better job of taking away his eyes. That s something we did very well against Detroit [on Saturday] and it s something that we re going to have to do better moving forward. Part of that was an inability to get close to the net and collect loose pucks. As Loui Eriksson put it, I thought we maybe made it a little bit too easy for them, too. We didn t have that traffic in front. We need some more guys to go in front and screen [Giguere].
