Please note, all prices are per person, and assume 2 persons sharing the same room. Please contact us for single occupancy/itinerary prices. The walks described at Camp Corbett and Mountain Quail Camp can be varied to suit your own interests. Please discuss with your guide on arrival. Itineraries can also be customised to your own requirements. CHUKA AND THE SARDA Tour F 9 DAYS Available: Price: October to May 1197/$1867/E1405 ex-delhi This tour provides an excellent introduction to a remote part of the Kumaon hills seldom visited by tourists, and rich in Corbett lore. You need to be reasonably fit to trek to and from Chuka. The section of trail through the Sharda Gorge is not suitable if you suffer from vertigo. DAY 1 Depart Delhi for Camp Corbett by road (about 6 to 7 hours), arriving for lunch. Alternatively, travel overnight by train Delhi-Kathgodam, arriving at Camp Corbett about 7 am, and after breakfast spend the rest of the morning viewing birds or exploring the forest in and around the Camp. After lunch, we take a 3-hour walk through the picturesque wooded valley of the River Boar to a magnificent forest glade, returning to Camp before nightfall. The Kaladhungi forests are home to some rare birds including Great Hornbill, Tawny and Brown Fish Owl, Crested Kingfisher, Great Slaty Woodpecker and Red Billed Leiothrix. There is a good possibility of sighting several deer species, and we may find fresh tiger, leopard and elephant tracks. This is the forest where Corbett tracked down the Batchelor of Powalgarh, a very large trophy tiger from the 1920 s. It is still prime tiger country, so we walk warily! Total distance is 6 km, including an easy river crossing. DAY 2 Drive by jeep through the terai forest to Sukhidhang, where the trek to Chuka commences. We walk about 6 km through the hills until we reach our camp site for the night. Dinner is prepared over an open fire next to the tents. DAY 3 After an early breakfast we continue our trek through hill forest to Kot Kindri and Thak villages. Between Kot Kindri and Thak is the densely wooded ravine where Corbett hunted the Chuka Man Eater in 1938. Thak village is largely deserted now and the fields are reverting to jungle. The view down to the Sarda and the Talla Des Ridge is spectacular. Along the path between Thak and Chuka we pass the spot where Corbett shot the elusive Thak Man-Eater in 1938 after a very arduous hunt. Overnight camp at Chuka. DAY 4 Explore the Mahakhali and Ladhya Rivers upstream from their confluence near the campsite. Walk up the Sarda River to the villages of Sem and Khet, and explore the ridge behind Sem where Corbett pursued the Thak Man-Eater. There are excellent views of the Talla Des Ridge to the north where Corbett hunted another man-eating tiger in the late 1920 s. If you are interested, the Sarda

offers excellent mahseer fishing. All fishing tackle, including rods, reels and lures, can be supplied by Sid Anand, who is an experienced mahseer angler. Overnight camping at Chuka. DAY 5 Walk from Chuka uphill through dense forest to Kumaya Chak and Thak villages. Explore the locations where Corbett hunted and shot the Thak Man-Eater. Walk to the valley between Thak and Kot Kindri where Corbett shot the Chuka Man-Eater. On the way, explore the forest overlooking the same valley where Corbett found the remains of one of the Thak Man-Eater s human victims. Overnight camp at Chuka. DAY 6 After an early breakfast, we trek through the sal forest to Kaladhunga, thence through the Sarda Gorge to Boom. Corbett describes the Gorge and the strange lights he observed there in his story of the Talla Des Man-Eater. Drive from Boom to Camp Corbett for a 3 night stay in a deluxe cottage, arriving in the evening. DAY 7 At Camp Corbett. In the early morning we walk up the valley of the River Boar to a large jungle glade and an attractive area of mixed forest in the foothills. These areas contain a rich avifauna including Eagles, Great Hornbills, 5 species of Kingfisher, different types of Woodpecker, Minivets, Leaf Birds, Drongos and Orioles amongst many other species. This valley is also tiger and elephant country, so we walk warily! Jim Corbett s story of the Batchelor of Powalgarh tiger took place in this part of the forest. After walking for about 3 hours we return to Camp Corbett for a late breakfast. Total distance: about 8 km. In the afternoon you have the option of another jungle walk, either up the river valley or in the sal forest opposite Camp where tiger and leopard tracks can often be found and sambhar, chithal, kakar and wild boar can usually be seen. If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of the Yellow Throated Pine Marten which also lives here. The bird life in the sal forest is distinctive and includes Parakeets, numerous Drongos, many varieties of Woodpecker including a family of rare Great Slaty Woodpeckers, Flycatchers, Minivets, and Large Hornbills. Birds of prey include the Crested Serpent Eagle, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Goshawk and Honey Buzzard. Dinner and overnight stay at Camp Corbett. DAY 8 After an early breakfast we leave by Gypsy for an early morning drive to Bijrani section of Corbett Tiger Reserve, about a 45 minute drive from Camp. About 550 bird species have been recorded from the Reserve, which is located in a magnificent setting in the Siwalik foothills of the Lower Himalaya. The Reserve is also famous for its tigers and herds of wild elephants, and Bijrani is considered one of the best areas of the Reserve for tiger sightings. During our visit, it may be possible to arrange an elephant ride. Please note these can only be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. The elephants provide an excellent viewing platform for

tiger-tracking and for seeing the diverse birds and animal species of the Reserve, which include wild elephant, 5 species of deer, wild boar and otter, as well as the elusive tiger and leopard. Alternatively, we explore the Reserve by open jeep, stopping as we encounter interesting birds or animals. In general, the elephant is better for tiger tracking but the Gypsy is better for photography. In the late morning we return to Camp Corbett for lunch. In the afternoon, we visit Corbett's home village of Choti Haldwani, which is only a short walk or drive from Camp. It is still a peaceful agricultural scene, with the winter wheat ripening in the fields and mango trees. Some of the oldest inhabitants still remember "Carpet Sahib" as Jim was affectionately known. Dinner and overnight stay at Camp Corbett. DAY 9 In the early morning, we walk from Camp up the River Boar and into a deep forested valley which has a very diverse avifauna. Expect to see 70 or more species in about 3 hours. This valley is home to Great Hornbills, Green Magpie, Laughing Thrushes, various Woodpeckers, plus numerous insectiverous smaller birds, and birds of prey. This valley is also famous as a haunt of tigers and elephants, and was used by Jim Corbett as his jungle studio where he shot some of the first ever movie film of tigers. After walking for about 3 hours we return to Camp Corbett for breakfast After breakfast we depart for Delhi by car or minibus, arriving about 5 pm. Clients travelling by train leave for Kathgodam train station after lunch or in the early evening, which gives a few more hours for walking or birding in the forests, or simply relaxing in Camp. CAMP CORBETT and MOUNTAIN QUAIL CAMPS If you prefer just to stay at one of our Camps, without taking part in an itinerary, you are most welcome! The tariff is Rs2500 per day per person, double occupancy for India residents. For foreign tourists, the price is 39/$61/E46 per day per person, double occupancy. These prices include breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea, coffee and jungle walks. The single occupancy rate is Rs3125 for Indian residents and 49/$76/E57 for foreign tourists. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Corbett Tiger Reserve is closed during 15 June - 15 November due to access problems during the monsoon. Clients wishing to visit the Reserve should therefore plan their trip to coincide with the open period. Please note that elephants for tiger-tracking can only be booked when you have arrived inside Corbett Tiger Reserve. We do our utmost to arrange this for our guests, but cannot guarantee the availability of elephants at the time of your visit.

Clients wishing to visit Pangot, and other areas above 2000 metres altitude, should note that cold temperatures and snow may be encountered during the months of December to February. Clients should plan to visit these areas during October-November and March-June. Please note that these itineraries can be rearranged to suit individual or group requirements, subject to practical considerations such as weather, timing and transportation, and sufficient advance notice. Please note that the walks described at Camp Corbett and Mountain Quail Camp are only a guide and can be varied to suit your own interests and abilities. If you would like to spend a shorter or longer time at any location, this can easily be arranged. Just let us know your requirements, and we will arrange a tailor-made program for you! Camp Corbett reserve the right to change any planned itinerary due to changed circumstances unforeseen at the time of booking. This could include religious or political unrest, earthquake, landslides, floods, and forest fire, or other unforeseen circumstances. Kumaon Exploration and its Associates Camp Corbett and Blaze-A-Trail Adventures will do its best to meet your requirements at all times, subject to the effects of these influences. We also reserve the right to change our published prices due to currency movements or unforeseen increase in costs. However, once we have invoiced you, this is the price you will owe us, and we will not levy any extra charges. Before commencing this itinerary, we strongly advise you to have adequate personal accident and medical insurance cover. Please contact your physician about the latest medical advice for travel to north India.Your itinerary may involve walking, elephant riding and jeep travel in rough jungle terrain, and there is a risk of encountering wild animals whose behaviour can be unpredictable. Road travel in India entails a greater risk than in most western countries. Your guide or leader will try to minimise the risk of personal injury at all times, but Kumaon Exploration and Camp Corbett cannot accept responsibility for any accident to its clients unless negligence can be proven to exist on our part. Booking a program with us denotes your acceptance of these terms. We cannot guarantee the sighting of any animal or bird species. The big cats in particular are extremely wary of humans and tend to keep in heavy cover. Seeing one should be considered an exceptional experience. You are more likely to find fresh footprints (pugmarks) on the jungle trails and riverbanks. Please note that although accomodation in Forest Rest Houses in Corbett Reserve and elsewhere is basic and clean, it may not be up to modern standards you are used to. Our lodges and the forest rest houses we use are not hotels, and do not have all of the facilities of hotels. Electricity may not be available, or may be unreliable. An intrepid spirit and sense of humour helps! Camp Corbett and Mountain Quail Camps have modern bathrooms, hot water and ceiling fans, although power supplies can sometimes be erratic. Our lodges provide ample tasty Indian and western food, but do not have a la carte menus. Vegetarians can easily be catered for. You will not go hungry!
