Managers Corner Last week, I sent out a golf course update. The bulk of that letter is listed below, as it is still relevant to what is happening on the course. For the purposes of the newsletter, I just want to add that there is A LOT planned for the months of April and May. The Par 3 on Thursday nights have started again, Couples Golf has restarted, and both Easter and Mother s Day will be here before we know it! Please check the newsletter and the weekly email flyers as there are many fun events planned for all ages! The following is the pertinent information from the latest Golf Course Update: I know a lot of you are wondering when are the greens going to start to improve? I wish there was a simple answer. The main ingredient we need at this point in time is consistently warm weather especially during our overnight hours. Think of the Bermudagrass as your Air conditioner. When it is hot outside the A/C runs constantly to keep your home cool. The minute the temperatures grow cooler again, the A/C unit shuts off. That is what the grass has been doing these past few months. We ll get a warm spell, and the grass will react and do a little growing and green up. Then we get a 50 degree spell, and the grass shuts back down and browns out once again. The angle of the sun, the amount of ambient light, the amount of heat put out by the sun based on the angle to the earth all comes in to play!! You have probably heard about the 150 degree threshold for Bermudagrass to thrive. Where that comes from is if the daytime high is 82, and the night time low is 68, we have reached our 150 degree threshold. In this scenario, the grass will start to grow much more thus starting to fill in the areas that were damaged during the freeze back in January. We are almost there, but we are not yet to the time of year where we can expect consistent growth. Our Superintendent, Daniel Wenzl, continues to work on the greens trying everything we can think of to help eliminate as many problems as we can. He is aerifying (to loosen up the soils to promote water flow through, air penetration, and nutrients to work better), fertilizing (to feed the plants), top dressing (to raise the surface temperature to promote growth and to level out the putting surface), and even checking the drainage of the greens (so water does not stand underground and promote fungus and root disease). We are completing soil samples and will utilize the results to set up nematode programs, and fertilization programs that we hope will help us get the nematode problem under control. We are looking at every opportunity and every idea that is presented that may help us. An example of this is we are running a test with a new product on Grove #3. We took soil samples prior to application on March 23 rd, and will take samples again 2 weeks after application. We will be checking nematode levels and nutrient levels in the soil. The hope is we see a reduction in nematode levels and an improvement in nutrient levels. We will keep you posted. The MUD s portion of the drainage project should be completed in early April. We will be completing a walk-through of the project in the very near future. That means we can start to put the golf course back together. Weather will once again play a key part in timing for the return of the course. As you know, both Plantation 2 and 3 will have to be completely rebuilt from tee box to green. Plantation 9 will have new tee boxes built, at a minimum, and Plantation 1 will be reviewed do to the changes in the size of the pond. A lot is happening, and a lot more will continue to happen. We realize that we are still a long way from providing you with the course you deserve.
