Drafted March 2017 Prepared by Vail PD TRAFFIC CRASHES IN VAIL, COLORADO 2014-2016 The following is a statistical examination of traffic crashes investigated by the Vail Police Department from 2014 through 2016. Quick Facts The three years averaged 459 collisions. The highest number of crashes occurs between 8 am 10 am, followed by 4 pm to 6 pm. This pattern has been consistent for three years. The two parking structures consistently have the highest number of collisions. Contributing factors include: driver unfamiliar, driver inexperience, DUI/DUID/DWAI, driver distracted, and other. The three-year average for interstate accidents as a percentage of total accidents is 24%. The Friday average daily traffic volume on the I-70 mountain corridor has risen from 37,007 vehicles in 2010 to 42,537 in 2015. The three-year average for traffic stops is 2,875. Top reasons for stops include speeding, improper lane usage, weaving. The three-year average for hit & runs is 81. The percentage of drivers and passengers complaining of injury or having an evident injury is 9.6% of all accidents reported. 40% of crashes involve a single vehicle; 56% involve two vehicles; 4% involve three or more. 9% involve an impaired driver. 100% of fatally or seriously injured pedestrians over the three-year period had been drinking. Collisions involving pedestrians do not involve repeat locations. Collisions involving bicyclists do not involve repeat locations. Crash risk factors over the last three years: Average daily traffic volume is increasing. Distracted walking, distracted driving and changing driver-yielding behavior are playing a bigger role in crashes. The separation between pedestrians, bicyclists and traffic has changed with the increase in development density.
