Issue 3 21st May 2009 BEXLEY CRICKET CLUB NEWSLETTER Welcome to the Bexley CC Newsletter. It is sent weekly by email to all club members on a Thursday and hard copies are on display in the Clubhouse. [Type a quote from the document or the summary of an interesting point. You can position the text Some of you appear to be having difficulties reading all the content of newsletters sent by email, our apologies for this, we are working on a solution. We are hoping to have all editions available on the Bexley website very soon. Member Profile Chris Woolley - Club Chairman Chris joined the Club in 1989 as a 10 year old colt and was captain of 2 colt s sides. After starting senior cricket, he captained the 4 th s/5th's and Sunday B XI for 7 years, earning his nickname Wobbler from his bowling action. In addition to captaincy duties and being part of the selection committee, he has also served on the Marketing and Bar Committees and can often be found in the kitchen rustling up a dish or two. He was missed through 2 summers of cricket whilst living in Sweden but on his return agreed to take on the Chairmanship from long serving Dean Webster at the end of last year. As chairman, I am looking forward to assisting the work of the current committees to extend the opportunities for people to play at Bexley CC, including the new Girl s section and the 6 th XI men s team. I also wish to improve the communication both from the club to members and back again, of which is this newsletter is a good example. Chris is looking for ways to improve the Club and is keen to hear from you if you feel you can volunteer your time or expertise in anyway. He can be contacted on cdwoolley@hotmail.com

Bexley Charity 6-A-Side Tournament Bank Holiday Monday The 13 th anniversary of Bexley s annual 6-a-side for the Graham Kersey Trophy arranged by Richard O Sullivan, will be held at Manor Way on the 25 th May. The event first started in 1997 in honour of Graham Kersey, who played for Surrey CCC and Bexley CC. He was tragically killed in a car crash playing cricket in Australia in the winter of 1996/97, at the peak of his county career. The inaugural year saw Surrey CCC and Kent CCC field teams, which Surrey CCC won, fielding many test match players. With coloured kit, black sightscreens and white cricket balls, the day has always been about fun. Importantly the 6-a-side also raises funds for Graham s charity Blind Cricket and Ben Hollioake s charity CHASE, which helps to support lifelimited children and their families. Unfortunately the last two years have seen the event rained off but even if the weather is not conducive to cricket, everything is in place for a great social event this year. The day starts at 10.30 am with 8 sides playing in 2 leagues, dressed in anything but cricket whites! The bar is open all day, food is available and the event finishes with a disco in the evening. All are welcome to watch the antics of grown men trying to play cricket in an array of inventive clothing, smashing the ball (or attempting) to all corners of Manor Way, raising money for the two charities. Any offers to help with catering/bbq or the bar, along with any offers of raffle prizes, please contact James Harris (Bomber) on jamez116@hotmail.com or 07515 107624. Previous year s 6-a-side dress code

Latest Match News It was a better weekend for the senior teams, who all managed to play their games, despite a forecast of rain. A return of Adam Riley from injury saw him take 2 wickets for the 2 s and the Pask brothers were in fine form with bat and ball. The 1 st XI beat Sevenoaks Vine at Manor Way by 9 wickets, bowling first. Steve Silver took 6 wickets for 24 runs and George Wells took 3 wickets for 26, with Babar Khan making 61 *. Jack Bell continued his form with the bat, scoring 74, supported by Dave Pask with 60 runs. Jon Childs and Sandeep Bains took 3 wickets each to help Bexley 2nd XI earn a winning draw against Sevenoaks Vine. 3 rd XI won against Shooters Hill on an interesting pitch making batting difficult. Martin Pask took 5 wickets for 22 runs in a low scoring game. The 4 th XI lost by 2 runs to Addington Village in an exciting end to the match. Addington needed 6 runs off the final ball and were caught on the boundary by George Newell, who unfortunately put a foot behind the boundary and being very honest, signalled 6. Ian Clark took 4 wickets for 39 runs. In another low scoring game, the 5 th XI beat Bromley, with colt Jack Ryan taking 4 wickets for 33 runs. Captain, Paul James top scored with 33 runs. The 6 th XI won their first match of the season away to Old Wilsonians, captained by Mike Shelvey. Richard O Sullivan made 54* with the bat and Chris Woolley took 3 wickets for 35, with the colts all making contributions. The next round of the National Cup is on Sunday 24 th May at Manor Way against Hastings CC. Come down and support the lads. A reminder to ALL teams The home changing room is only for the use of the Bexley side that is playing at Manor Way on that day, whether that is a colt s team or a men s team. All home players must leave the changing room clean and tidy after the game, it is the responsibility of the captain/manager of the side to ensure that this happens. No kit, bags or other items are to be left at the club, please remember the changing room is not a storage facility. Please leave changing rooms as you would wish to find them. All match fixtures and results can be found on the Club s website bexley.play-cricket.com along with player s statistics.

Member Profile Nick Stroudley Chairman of Entertainments Committee Nick first joined the Club as a colt in 1996 and made his senior debut for the Sunday B s one year later under the expert guidance of Peter Gough. As a batsman, Nick s highest score is 113 not out for the 3rd XI against Addington Village and he is hoping to earn many points for those who have selected him in their Fantasy Cricket League teams. He is also vice-captain for the 3 rd XI, encouraging and supporting younger players joining the team. In his second season as Chairman of Entertainments, Nick enjoys performing off the field too. He has participated in 5 Bexley Talent Nights during Cricket Week in acts such as Busted, Westlife and 5ive. Bexley is like no other cricket club in the country. The combination of cricketing talent and the widest range of characters the world has to offer make this club the greatest place to spend your summer. This is why we are all proud to say we're members of Bexley CC. Let s hope 2009 brings even more success, both on and off the pitch. Colts News A mixed week, with some games being abandoned due to rain. Harry Furze took a hat trick amongst his 4 wickets for 16 runs in the U13 s win in the 2nd round of the MCC U13 Cup against Old Colfeans. George Hayley and Angus Dalgleish retired on 33* and 31* respectively. The next round is this Friday at Manor Way against HSBC. Matthew Ellard scored 25* with Ryan Weston 26*and 3 wickets for 7 runs, along with Adeel Mushtaq s 3 wickets for 7 runs helped the U11A s to victory over Beckenham in Division 1. Dean Jefferies scored 24* on Monday in a very close win over HSBC for the U13B s. HSBC looked set to win, when some tight bowling and fielding, with two vital catches, saw Bexley win by 2 runs. Rain prevented Stanley Wells taking another 6 wickets this week for the U16 s. Adam Ball scored a quick 41 off 36 balls in the match against Blackheath but the heaven s opened and the match had to be abandoned. The Manor Way U11 Tournament will be on Sunday 14 th June and Sue Towers is looking for offers of help on the day or raffle prizes and cakes. She can be contacted on odas@btinternet.com or 01322 528264. There is a colt s notice board in the Clubhouse, please check for any colt s news, match round ups and team photos. All league results and statistics can be checked on the NKJL web site www.nkentjunior.play-cricket.com.

. Entertainment News Champions League Final Wednesday 27 th May The Clubhouse will be open from 6.30pm to watch the final between Manchester United and Barcelona for all club members. Come down and watch Fergie s boys in action over a pint. Clay Pigeon Shoot Cricket week Neil Carter is organising a morning of clay pigeon shooting in Bean on Wednesday 15 th July, during Cricket Week. For 50 you can have one to one instruction, gun hire, cartridges, ear defenders, clays and the chance to win one of three trophies. Also included in the price is a buffet lunch back at Manor Way. If you are interested in joining this new event during Cricket Week or wish to know more details, you can speak to Neil at the bar or email him on nlc@apexgrange.com or call 07801 228219. Finally Artificial Cricket Nets Following reports of inconsistent bounce, the Ground Committee contacted the installers who recently visited to undertake an inspection and some remedial work to the newest two nets. Please could members, who have any comment regarding the bounce and performance of the nets, report their comments to groundsman, Dave Sealey, so the club can have some feedback for the installers. The nets are available for use by all members but they may find it useful to brush the surface free of debris prior to the session. PLEASE NOTE - All under 18 s must wear full cricket equipment, including a helmet, when using a hard cricket ball on any part of the ground. Fantasy Cricket League The league has now been running for 2 weeks and Mike Dixon led after the first week but has now been over taken by Grant Houghton s Mighty Tanks who are now in the lead with 738 points. There are 41 entrants and weekly results and table can be viewed on http://www.bexleycc.co.uk/fantasycricket2009. All entry payments are due by the 31st May and failure to pay by this deadline will lead to expulsion from the league. Remember any news items, photos or suggestions are welcome and can be sent to Lesley Griggs on griggsys@btinternet.com
