Volume 2 Issue 1 Section B READ BETWEEN THE STRIPES Robin Williams Sarah R. And Alexus D Robin Mclaurin Williams was born on July 21st, 1951. He lived in San Francisco. He was a talented actor, stand-up comedian, film producer, mime, and screenwriter. Some popular movies he was a part of are ALADDIN, HOOK, MRS.DOUBTFIRE, HAPPY FIRE, POPEYE, JUMANJI, NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, and many more! Robin Williams was an awesome comedian to a lot of people. According to Fox 23, Robin Williams seemed full of joy on the outside, but was apparently tormented on the inside. He suffered from clinical depression. According to the Mayo Clinic website, an estimated 19 million Americans suffer from depression He sadly died on August 11th, 2014 at the age of 63. He had three children and a wife named Susan Schnieder. He will be missed! "No matter what people tell you words and ideas can change the world." -Robin Williams DOG ABUSE Victoria M. It is okay to discipline your dogs, but it is not ok to abuse your dogs. It is just not kind. Dogs have rights just like people, Why not show them we love them, because they love us and have our backs. Why don't we have their backs? Would you like to be locked up for days without food and water?some people are doing that right this second some where in the United States... sad. Something else that is sad is that a lot of dogs are getting locked up and dying of starvation. Be nice to your dogs.
SOCCER Abby S. Soccer was first played in Egypt, ancient China, and Rome. Then the basic rules of soccer were passed on for future generations to use. Soccer was played in Mid-evil times. Some of the soccer balls from the past were made out of animal intestines or animal skin. Soccer was first played in the U.S. around 1620, but the American Football Association was organized in 1884 in New Jersey. Soccer is also called football. The most famous soccer/football team is Barcelona which is from Barcelona, Spain. There can actually be 15 or 16 players on a team but only 11 can play on the pitch at one time (the field is also referred to as the pitch). The rule/ law in soccer is that a match can't start unless the opposing team has at least 7 players in attendance and one of these players has to be a goalie. Then the match may start. The main positions played on the pitch are defense, forward, mid-fielder and goalie where these positions are played at all times. Soccer is an amazing sport played by millions all around the world. Peppermints: Just minty or more? By Lauren Worley It's a well-known theory that peppermints help in school. Peppermints are believed to help students relax and concentrate on schoolwork. Some teachers give peppermints to their students during finals to help relieve stress. These striped candies have a sharp smell that is similar to lily of the valley and lavender, flowers known to calm people, so maybe there is some logic behind all this. If all the teachers handed out peppermints during a test, or let the kids bring some of their own, they might have a chance at higher grades. So maybe we should buy peppermints more than just around the holidays. But I don't think peppermints will make you necessarily smarter. A good night's sleep and a big breakfast will do wonders! And hey, even if this isn't really true, at least bad breath won't be a problem! Bluegrass and Chili Festival By: Emma.S The Bluegrass and Chili Festival was on September 4th, 2014. At the Chili Festival there were master cooks. There was a children's place just for the kids that go to this festival and there were crafts for the kids.
There was a lot of chili to eat so everyone had as much as they wanted! At the Bluegrass and Chili Festival there was an open car show. At the Festival there were dance exhibitions too! The Bluegrass and Chili Festival was really fun! The last part of the festival was a Mid-America Regional cook off! At the Chili Festival you could buy a taster kit. At the Festival there was a Vocal competitions which I'm sure everyone will did great at!! It was open on Thursday and Friday from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm. On Saturday it was open from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm. Popular songs of 2014 by Vanessa M. Currently from the top 100 most popular songs of 2014 the song that is number one is "Rude " by MAGIC! Rude is a small Canadian reggae band of four very talented young men. It's also from their newest album "Don't Kill The MAGIC!" was released on October 12, 2013. The second most popular song is by Sam Smith with "Stay With Me." This song is very popular and very catchy, it also comes from his newest album "In The Lonely Hour". The third most popular song is by Iggy "Azeala" featuring Charli XCX with " Fancy." What makes this song so popular is the sick beat. The beat is not to fast and not to slow, it seems to be the trend for popular music. Going to State The WRJH archery team had been practicing every day of the week. Our team would practice morning and evening. Some students would shoot good one day and another day they might miss the target. Mrs.Miller had a friend that would come up and help us shoot, his name is Mr.Weaver.
He would fletch (fix) the arrows and and work on the bows, He was also the team mechanic. That year the team went to state and we won! This news reporter got first in the boys division,and Ariel E. got first in the girls division. The archery team did very good this year and shot amazing. Based on last year we will hopefully have an opportunity to have a team next year. Information for the 2014-2015 camp is included. John W. Colorful birds Did you know Birds of Paradise are known for their striking colors? Their beautiful colors range from yellow, blue, scarlet, and green. Their colors distinguish them as the most beautiful birds in the world. Males show vibrant feathered ruffs or elegant feathers. Some of these birds have enormous beautiful head ornaments. These male birds show their bright colors and put on a show. Birds Of Paradise are found in South America. They are the most fascinating creatures on this planet in this writer's humble opinion.
Alexis T. Kids VS Books Most kids don't read books! I think kids should read books because you have to read everyday in school, work, and just in life. Reading can make you have more knowledge. Reading can be really fun and enjoyable. There are all kinds of super good books in the world to pick from. When you're in class and you have finished all of your work, you can read during extra time. Reading helps students' education. The books win, because teachers and staff at schools encourage the students to read books. Some guardians at home make their kids read. Some teachers assign books for the students to read that are worth half of their grade. Some kids just read in general everyday. The books take the win in kids versus books because books are the tickets to a bright future for everyone! Hanna. S. VOLLEYBALL Have you ever played volleyball? Would you consider it? Well if you would, here are a few tips. When you go to serve make sure you hit it with your flat hand or the ball will hit the floor! If you want to bump and set it, make sure you bump it hard(do you know how to bump or set) or yet again it will most likely hit the floor!!!! A bump is were you put your hands together and hit the ball upwards to another volleyball player, a set is like throwing a football except you set it above your head!! SCHOOL DIFFERENCES Schools are different in several ways. Some schools have a dress code, others schools have no dress code. Some schools start earlier than others, others schools start later, for example starting at 9:00AM. WRJH and Claremore High School start at 8:30 am and the elementary schools in Claremore start at 7:55 AM, some private schools start at 7:30 in the morning. Some private schools allow open toed shoes, most don't because you have to follow a dress code. Other schools allow shorts and tank tops. Private schools don't allow anything but their school uniform. At WRJH our dress code is all about things that cover your body. All shirts can't be above the waist. Shorts can't be above the knees. You're also not allowed any facial piercings showing. Hallie A.
