Chicago Cubs (2-3) vs. Atlanta Braves (4-1) Information 2013 Chicago Cubs Media Relations Office April 7, 2013 Turner Field Game No. 6 Road Game No. 6 RHP Jeff Samardzija (1-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Tim Hudson (0-0, 6.23) TIME TO HIT THE ROAD: The Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves this afternoon play the series finale of their three-game set, also the final game of Chicago s six-game, two-city season opening road trip through Pittsburgh (2-1) and Atlanta (0-2) the Cubs return to Chicago for their Wrigley Field home opener tomorrow afternoon against the Milwaukee Brewers, the start of a 10-game homestand. The Cubs this afternoon take aim at a.500 road trip and a 3-3 start to the season, which would match their best start through six games since 2011 the Cubs have started better than 3-3 just once in the last seven seasons (4-2 in 2009), and started exactly 3-3 on three occasions in that span. BRINGING THEIR WORK HOME: The Cubs tomorrow afternoon begin the 100th season of baseball at Wrigley Field when they host the Milwaukee Brewers for the club s 98th Wrigley Field opener Wrigley Field opened in 1914 and played host to the Chicago Federals/Whales for two seasons before the Cubs began calling the ballpark home in 1916. The Cubs are 52-44-1 in their previous 97 openers at the corner of Clark and Addison overall, the home team has gone 54-44-1 in the previous 99 openers, with the Chicago Federal League team winning both of their home openers (1914-15). Going back to 1876, the Cubs have played 137 home/chicago openers in their National League history going 78-57-2 thanks to Ed Hartig for his research assistance. ENCORE, ENCORE?: Jeff Samardzija makes his second start of the season after tossing 8.0 scoreless innings of two-hit ball in a 3-1, Opening Day win last Monday in Pittsburgh. Samardzija became only the second Cubs starting pitcher in the last 100 Opening Days to pitch at least eight innings while allowing two or fewer hits, joining Lon Warneke on April 17, 1934 Warneke tossed a 9.0 inning, complete-game, one-hit, 6-0 shutout in Cincinnati thanks to Ed Hartig for his research assistance. ON THE O : The Cubs last night scored five runs on 13 hits, approaching both their season total in runs through the first four games (seven) and hits through the first four games (16). Anthony Rizzo last night slugged his team-leading second home run of the season, while Nate Schierholtz upped his team-leading numbers to a.364 batting average,.727 slugging percentage,.500 on-base percentage and 1.227 OPS. IRON MAN: Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro has appeared in 201-consecutive games, the longest active streak in the National League and the second-longest active streak in all of baseball he trails only Detroit s Prince Fielder and his 348 games. Castro still has a ways to go before nearing the top streaks in franchise history Billy Williams holds the club record with 1,117 consecutive games (1963-70), while Ernie Banks has the second-longest run with 717 consecutive games (1956-61). A TOUGH STRETCH: Beginning with this series in Atlanta, the Cubs kicked off a stretch of 19-straight games against teams that finished above.500 last season, including 13 games against playoff teams the Braves last season earned a wild card berth into the postseason. Following the upcoming homestand, the Cubs play three games in Milwaukee, April 19-21, and then travel to Cincinnati for three games against the defending N.L. Central division champs. This stretch against winning clubs from 2012 ends during a four-game set in Miami against the Marlins (69-93 in 2012), April 25-28.
