Today the Groove II continues as a strong competitor in the mountain bike helmet market. 2010 The WATU The Watu is introduced offering advanced construction methods and light weight to bike enthusiasts of all kinds. 2011 the ConeHead TECHNOLOGY SCOTT builds on its heritage of innovation by introducing ConeHead, a revolutionary safety Technology providing lighter weight and increased safety. The new Vanish, featuring ConeHead, is released and continues the SCOTT legacy of high profile international racing wins. 2012 The SPLIT, Vanish & Wit Two new helmets are added to the range. The Wit, a mid-range helmet offering high end features to both road and mountain bike enthusiasts; and the SPLIT, a class leading product of the SCOTT Aerodynamic Science Lab and extensive real world testing with pro tour team GreenEDGE. The SPLIT, Vanish & Wit all secure significant wins in 2012 atop the heads of Team GreenEDGE and SCOTT Swisspower riders. 2013 The Lin and the TAAL SCOTT helmet innovation continues with the introduction of two new helmets featuring the revolutionary MIPS safety Technology. The Lin, a new mountain bike helmet, and the Taal, a new multi discipline helmet, both feature MIPS and represent an attractive choice to those seeking the edge in safety. 2
The SCOTT Development AND MIPS Team SCOTT and MIPS have worked closely together to introduce the innovative MIPS safety technology to the Scott helmet range for 2013. MIPS technology will be featured in the new Scott Lin and TAAL helmets. Design Objectives / Goal of Collaboration MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System) is an innovative new protection system featured in two new Scott bike helmets. These cutting edge MIPS helmets offer the safest possible environment for cyclists of all levels. MIPS was founded in 2001 as a result of over a decade of biomechanical and neuroscientific research, conducted at the Royal Institute of Technology and world-renowned Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. SCOTT was founded in 1958 when Ed Scott revolutionized skiing by inventing the first aluminum ski pole. Since then SCOTT has brought numerous innovative products to market, and has positioned itself as a leader in technical products in the biking market. With a company mantra of Innovation, Technology and Design, SCOTT has developed into a worldwide powerhouse in Bike, Wintersport, Motosport, and Running. Scott is now proud to reinforce this mantra with the introduction of the revolutionary MIPS technology to its bike helmet line, building on the already successful introduction of MIPS to the Scott Winter helmet line. How people fall Conventional helmets are tested by dropping them vertically onto a solid surface. They are designed to protect you from straight/radial impacts. For over 15 years MIPS has researched how people crash in the real world. Collaborating with some of the world s leading neurosurgeons and experts, MIPS has established that when you fall, your head most often hits the ground at an angle, creating a rotational violence to the brain. This rotational violence can cause major damage to your brain. A helmet with MIPS absorbs much of that damaging rotational energy, offering you better protection. And if, you do fall vertically onto your head, a SCOTT helmet with MIPS will protect you just as well as traditional helmet. Accident statistics* show that that many accidents involve an angled impact to the head; this can cause more severe injuries due to the rotational violence to the brain. MIPS Concept The inspiration behind MIPS unique patent comes from the human brain. The brain is suspended in a low friction cerebrospinal fluid which allows your brain to slide within your skull to protect the brain under impact. MIPS is a unique technology intended to protect your brain against angled impacts by imitating the brains natural low friction barrier, thereby reducing the shock transmitted to your brain. Below are three images showing the strain levels experienced by the brain in an angled impact between helmets with and without MIPS: exactly the same speed and angle, but with very different outcomes - the more red areas, the more damage to the brain NO HELMET HELMET WITHOUT MIPS HELMET WITH MIPS Kleiven, S. MIPS TECHNOLOGY Inside MIPS - How does MIPS work in a SCOTT helmet The MIPS Low Friction Layer is positioned on the inside of the helmet, between the inner surface of the helmet and the head. The MIPS Low Friction Layer is attached to the helmet by specially developed flexible anchors. MIPS does not interfere with the design, shape, comfort or the technical features of the helmet. Wearing the helmet you will not notice that MIPS is there. However, at the point of impact the MIPS Low Friction Layer moves relative to the helmet, independent of impact direction, significantly reducing the rotational violence to the brain. SCOTT LIN FEATURING MIPS TECHNOLOGY SCOTT TAAL FEATURING MIPS TECHNOLOGY MIPS flexible anchors The MIPS layer is mounted to the helmet using specially developed flexible anchors. These anchors facilitate the movement of the MIPS low friction layer in the event of an accident, significantly reducing rotational violence to the riders brain. 5
