Sporting Profile Issue 12: Bishop PE Teachers Sporting Profile -Each week we would like to share with you what your PE teachers have been doing outside school: Mr Bishop I ve always had a keen interest in all aspects of sport. This began at a young age with joining my first football team and still continues today. If I m honest, I am not the most talented sportsman, but I always put in 100% effort. Early life I played many sports growing up, in particular football and rugby, but I also tried my hand at tennis, swimming and athletics. I was captain of my primary school football team and would also often compete in sprinting and long jump competitions. When I was 7 I was introduced to the sport of cricket. This quickly became my favourite sport as I found that I could bowl pretty quickly and was an enthusiastic (if not very gifted) batsman! At secondary school I came across basketball. However, as only about 6 other boys played it, we generally came second in most matches. At university I decided that cricket would be the main sport, although I still played football and basketball recreationally. A recurring knee problem limited the number of matches I could play, however, I still featured each season. In addition to playing I also became interested in moving into cricket and basketball coaching so I began taking steps to qualify. I gained my Level 1 and 2 certificates through Hampshire County Cricket Club and the Wessex Basketball Association and have coached at club, county and school level ever since. Present I am still playing regular and competitive cricket 2017 was the best season I ve ever had, despite not hitting a single six! I have taken part in one Tough Mudder endurance event and have just signed up for my second one next April. I have recently started training with Yateley Silverbacks Basketball Club and am aiming to start playing competitively again soon. Coaching has taken over from playing as my main sporting contribution and I am currently working with various groups for Surrey County Cricket Club. Highlight: There s been a few hitting a fifty in my final ever game for my cricket club was a great way to leave at the end of this season. Seeing several boys and girls who I either coached or scouted come through the Surrey Cricket age groups has been a great experience whilst getting to work for Surrey Cricket in itself is a real privilege! One highlight has been the progress made by the Girls basketball side at Maiden Erlegh who have gone from strength to strength, especially last year when they lost just one league game! Lowlight: When I was 14 I suffered a very bad knee injury while playing cricket which effectively ended any chance of me playing any sport at a higher level and stopped me from being able to bowl properly. A more humorous lowlight came this summer when my wife came to watch me play for the first time unfortunately she turned up at the wrong ground, watched for an hour, got bored and then drove home! Sporting Hero s: Brendon McCullum a fantastic and aggressive cricketer who took a weak and demoralised New Zealand side and turned them into one of the best teams in the world. Michael Jordan quite simply a legend of basketball, good for a few inspirational quotes too. In next week s issue, we will look at the sporting profile of Miss Allwright. 5
ADDITIONAL NOTICES As always, we love to hear about our students sporting success outside of school. Please keep us updated! You can email info/photos/videos to pn@maidenerleghschool.co.uk. If anyone would be interested in sponsoring this year s Sports Personality of the Year Awards Evening or one of our sports teams, please also get in touch. GIRLS RUGBY On Saturday 14 th October, a group of rugby girls from Years 7-11 gave up their afternoon to take part in a training session ran by Redingensians Rugby Club. After the training session, the girls were the flag bearers for the 1 st XV match which took place after and featured both PE s Mr Bryant & Mr Flynn. It was a fantastic day of rugby and hopefully some of these girls will get signed up to rugby clubs on the back of it. 6
GREEN PARK CHALLENGE & READING HALF MARATHON Last year we had a record number of Maiden Erlegh students take part in the Green Park Challenge and this year we want to get even more involved! The Green Park Challenge is a 3km running event that takes place the same morning as the Reading Half Marathon. This year s event takes place on Sunday 18 th March 2018. It costs 10 to enter. Each entrant will receive a free race t shirt, finishers medal, water bottle and goody bag. Every finisher automatically represents their school and schools win prizes based on how their students finish. But more importantly it gets young people to love running and encourages a physically active lifestyle. We would love for as many of you to be involved as possible! You can sign up here: www.readinghalfmarathon.com For our older students who are 17 by the 18 th March, why not really challenge yourself and attempt the Reading Half Marathon? This really is one to tick off the bucket list and is a fantastic course for a first timer (the fastest half marathon in the UK in 2016). If you decide to sign up, fantastic, let Mr Pringle know so that we can keep track of all Maiden Erlegh students taking part. www.readinghalfmarathon.com 7
WEAR IT PINK IN PE WEEK Monday 16 th Friday 20 th October has been our annual Wear it pink in PE week. We always encourage boys and girls from all years to bring in PE appropriate pink items of clothing to help raise awareness and money during Breast Cancer Awareness month. We would really like to thank all students across the school who got involved with this initiative and helped to raise hundreds of pounds for this deserving charity. 8
