Lahn: short TOUR DESCRIPTION The short tour A little more than a weekend - but really a lot of holiday. On this cycling tour, you start in the lively university town of Marburg, famous for the Elisabethkirche and the Landgrafenschloss. Look forward to the relaxed atmosphere in the city with its quaint student bars. Tourism, culture and history have always aroused each other in Marburg. This was already the case in the 13th century: the Teutonic Order, in honor of the 1231 Saints, who died here, built the first Gothic hall church on German soil. The Elizabeth Church became the target of pilgrims from all over the country - a first form of tourism. Landgraf Philip the Magnanimous founded the foundation stone for the world-wide university town with students and visitors from all over the world. Enjoy the peace and quiet in the idyllic alleyways of the historic Wetzlar and admire the world-famous Limburg Cathedral and the completely protected city center. Dive into the river of time. Living medieval in a modern city. Let us start with the old bridge. In former times a ford crossed the river Lahn, from the middle of the 12th century a first wooden bridge. Enjoy a scenic highlight on the last day of the bike, away from all traffic; you will be able to ride through untouched valley landscape before your trip ends in Bad Ems.
1. day Marburg arrival Make sure to plan in enough time to visit the historical Old-town and the Elisabeth church of Marburg (it is possible to arrive by train/parking facilities at the hotel/rental bike at the hotel). 2. day Marburg - Wetzlar 54 km Let's get started for the first stage of your journey. Today you cycle through the wide valley of the Lahn, along idyllic situated lakes, to Wetzlar. Cafes and restaurants invite you to stroll through the historic city center. What makes the Cathedral so unique, you should look closer: The facade is obviously unfinished. Go on a dicovery trip trough this church in the center of Wetzlar old town and enjoy the spicy speciality of the region - a "Handkäs mit Musik" (a cheese with onions in oil). 3. day Wetzlar - Limburg 65 km
You will leave Wetzlar again via the stone bridge to reach the ancient mine Grube Fortuna after only 8 km. This mine is the only ore mining facility nation-wide, where visitors become witnesses of how ore mining was operated in the past with the original machines. After that, you will continue your way through the unforgettable landscape to Weilburg, whose Renaissance-style castle is situated on a plateau elevated high above the Lahn. The river begins to curl then between the Taunus and Westerwald regions. You will follow the paved towpath via Aumenau and Runkel to Limburg and its famous cathedral. 4. day Limburg - Bad Ems 47 km Enjoy today the scenic highlight of the trip: Far away from any traffic, you will find your way through untouched valleys from Diez to Balduinstein. Two climbs which can be comfortably avoided by train (11 km) are part of the route today. Catch your breath again at the monastery of Arnstein or at the castle of Nassau before continuing to Bad Ems. 5. day Bad Ems departure Your bicycle vacation comes to an end after breakfast. It is possible to depart by train, should you wish to return to Marburg, we recommend our return transfer service (departure at 9 a.m., ca. 2,5 hours).

Condition of cycle paths The Lahn Valley Bike Trail leads through beautiful and varied landscapes of forests, hills, meadows, wetlands and steep slopes studded with rocks. The Lahn originates in the middle of silent forests in the low mountain ranges Siegen-Wittgenstein, the most densely forested region of Germany. After the Lahn has left the mountain country, the Lahn valley widens and passes into a hilly landscape. The Lahn then runs through an open and fertile Shire before the slopes come closer and form a gorge-like valley. In the last section the Lahn runs in tight turns to its mouth with the Rhine at Lahnstein.The Lahn Valley Cycle Route was honoured in 2006 as one of the first cycle tracks in Germany, with 4 out of 5 stars by the ADFC. Evaluated have been navigability, eviction, security and tourism infrastructure.you cycle on mostly flat, paved hiking and cycling trails aside from traffic noise, only occasionally a few gradients must be overcome. The route is very well signposted. Most of the time the railway line runs parallel to the bike path. Available rental bikes If you choose to rent a velocipede-rental bike for the tour,you can choose between woman s and men's bicycles either with 7-speed gear shift and coaster brake or 27-speed gear shift and freewheel or electric bikes. All ladies' bikes have a low opening that makes mounting and dismounting much easier. The bikes are suitable for all ladies from 150 cm in height and for all gentlemen from 165 cm in height.
