Bethany House Bethany House, a non-profit agency, was founded in 1978 in response to a demonstrated need for shelter for homeless women and their children. As the demand for shelter grew in the 1980 s, Bethany House expanded into a larger facility, Bethany One, with a 12-bed capacity. Two other facilities were soon added, giving Bethany House the capability to house up to 35 and to provide services not only to those housed at Bethany but also to numerous persons and families in the surrounding communities. Again, in 2003 and in 2004, Bethany expanded its housing and services to provide for 50 persons nightly, and in 2005 we again increased our capacity to 75. As we began 2007, we added additional bedrooms to one of our residences to provide for an even larger number of families. In 2012 we opened our fifth home to provide longer-term housing and services for our mature [over 50] single women. Throughout its 38 years, Bethany has provided safe, supportive emergency housing for homeless women and their dependent children, combined with a comprehensive component of services and resources. Of those women who remain with us for more than two weeks, 94% have successfully found appropriate housing. Since we are a community-based organization and an integral part of the human services arena, we are in an excellent position to provide well-coordinated direct services and to collaborate with other organizations to effect significant and lasting change. Bethany s work results in everyday miracles as lives are changed and our little ones smile! Thank you for your generous support of the special work which is done in loving memory of BILL KERWICK. Bethany s 2017 Honoree: Martin H. Alpert Martin H. Alpert grew up here on Long Island as one of seven children in the Alpert family and, even though he travels frequently, he always returns home to Westhampton Beach and to so many good friends and fond memories. Marty and his girlfriend Kristi have four lovely daughters: Amanda, Lauren, Whitney and Lindsey, and he is soon to be a grandfather for the fourth time! After high school, Marty left Long Island to study for his BA in Accounting at Villanova University and then continued on and received his law degree from the prestigious John Marshall Law School in Chicago. Marty now brings more than 35 years experience as a trial lawyer in areas of risk assessment, corporate governance, health care, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), and the insurancereinsurance industry. His success has brought Marty to his present challenge as the President and CEO of Environmental and General Liability Consulting Group, located in League City, Texas. His firm focuses on Asbestos, Pollution, and Hazardous Health Analysis, General Liability Claims and Risk Management. Marty is an avid golfer whose primary home courses are FireRock in Fountain Hills AZ, Magnolia Creek in Texas, and Baiting Hollow here in Calverton. Since Marty travels extensively for business, he always builds in some time as he visits different cities, to seek out a local golf club and relax for a while on an untried course. He usually plans an annual visit to Pebble Beach as well, which he counts among his favorites. Marty is involved with several charities including the John Starks Foundation, St. Jude s Children s Hospital, Moon and Stars Memorial, Furyk Foundation, Lexus Champions for Charity and, of course, Bethany House. For the past eight years, Marty has faithfully attended Bethany s golf outings and has strongly supported our efforts to make life a bit better for homeless families here on Long Island. We are so grateful to Marty for his generosity and we are pleased to name him our Honoree for the 2017 Bethany House Golf Outing he never forgets to remember those who struggle and he does not hesitate to share his blessings with them!
