The summer leagues are short, fun, and are an excellent way to stay in practice mode until the fall leagues begin in September. This was a great bowling season for many bowlers. Many accomplished their highest game and / or series to date. Many of the seasoned bowlers kept adding their honor scores to their list of accomplishments. When I reflect back over the years when Princess Anne Bowling Center was the only 10 pin center in town, I remember watching bowlers during the league while my mom worked. Not only did we use telescore sheets that could be erased each night prior to the start of the next league, we had to keep manual score. I wonder how many new bowlers we have today don t know how to do that? I remember we use to place a ^ over a 111 score to form a roof, and we use to place a star on the scoring sheet for a star frame when all the bowlers marked. We would even place a dark solid line beside a frame if someone had several open frames in a row. I think it made bowling fun and I enjoyed the basic tasks of keeping score. The most important thing that I remember is that we announced every 200 game bowled. Why? Because a 200 game back then really meant something. With all the technology and improvements on the bowling equipment today, bowlers are scoring high and averaging 200 more than ever before. Today, we have bowlers bowl high games and they aren t even announced. Has high scores lost their true meaning? I hope not. Regardless of whether someone bowls their first 200 game or someone bowls their 5 th 300 game, each of those games is an accomplishment and the bowler should be recognized. I know we can t announce every 200 game since they are so frequent but I do think we should continue to announce those games which have a significant meaning to the bowler. So to all of those bowlers who never had to keep their bowling score manually, my challenge to you is this. Learn to do that. You will feel a great deal of accomplishment because you will have a better insight into the sport of bowling. Bowling isn t just about having the right equipment or the right shoes. It isn t just understanding the lane conditions and knowing how to adjust. Bowling is about understanding the entire spectrum of the sport, networking with other bowlers and having fun. There is nothing better than bowling with friends and enjoy doing it because of the love for the sport. Whether I do good or bad, bowling is my sport and I plan on doing it for many years to come.
