Bama Drill This drill is the basic two-ball drill used by many option teams across the football world. As the season progresses perimeter blocking is added to simulate game situations as much as possible. Most of us are right handed and going to the right is natural, going to the left is reserved for the last few minutes of a drill. We do just the opposite, we always start the drill going to the left. We set up the l.o.s. tape that has the position letters on it. The line tape splits help with the aiming points for RB and QB. Play numbers are: Odds to the left, and Evens to the right.

Bama Drill cont. The QB s line up in the centers position and snap the ball to each other. The RB s line up in their normal positions, directly behind the QB in the pistol. After the RB runs his turn in the drill, he will become the hand off key (HOK) for the QB in the next group. If the HOK turns toward the RB (PULL), if the HOK gets upfield (GIVE). The slots will take their normal position (1 X 2) off the tackle. The frontside slot will block his assignment, and the he becomes the pitch key for the QB in the next group. The backside slot is the motion back and must get in pitch relationship for the QB is his group. We run inside veer, belly (outside veer), and midline option in this drill. Each particular option gets 3 minutes apiece. We start to the left and go through each one and if the group period runs out of time it is OK. The options will likely get run to the right in team time. We generally have 3-4 QB s and an equal number of RB s, with 6-8 slots on each side. The varsity backs all run together and the Sophomores run their groups. This is done for the timing of cadence and mesh points. Each group gets 5-6 repetitions for each type of option. By the time practice starts our entire backfield has run 30-40 plays in 15-20 minutes.
