On Friday, Jan. 30, the Cougars (13-5, 9-5 NSIC) host Minnesota Duluth (9-9, 7-7 NSIC) at 6 p.m. with hopes of quickly halting their two-game losing skid. In the inal home game before a four-game road trip, USF welcomes St. Cloud State (11-7, 7-7 NSIC) to the Stewart Center on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 4 p.m. The Cougars are still in good position to host a irst round game in the NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament as one of the top four teams in the NSIC South Division. Currently, USF is tied for third with Winona State in the division, and fourth overall. Comeback bids fall short for USF on the road Fighting out back from double-digit deicits both nights, the Cougars dropped two close road games this past weekend, halting their three-game winning streak. A near-ive-minute scoring drought allowed Concordia-St. Paul to build a 16-point lead and Sioux Falls would race back to take a lead, but fall short 76-72. Jaicee Ulmer tied a career-best with ive 3-pointer sin the game, keeping the Cougars in the game. She would inish with a game-high 22 points, matching a season best, and Marie Malloy would pour in 19 to help the Cougars make it a game. After taking a 72-71 lead the Cougars last four possessions came up empty and the Golden Bears escaped with a victory on their home court. The following evening, Sioux Falls found themselves in another double-digit hole after Minnesota State built an 11-0 lead two minutes into the game. USF responded behind Ulmer to tie the game in the irst half, but MSU rebuilt their advantage and won 78-72. Down 11 points with just more than two minutes left in the game, Marie Malloy scored eight of her 14 points to trim the MSU lead to two, but her eforts would fall short and she would inish with 14 points. Ulmer led the way again with 17 points and Taylor Varsho and Teagan Molden surpassed 10 points apiece with 11 and 10, respectively. Scouting Minnesota Duluth (9-9, 7-7 NSIC) Minnesota Duluth enters the weekend coming of a split on the road and close out a four-game road trip in Sioux Falls and Marshall, Minn. The Bulldogs are 4-4 on the road this season and 3-4 in conference road games. At UMD, she has led her squad to the NCAA Tournament on two occasions. Wiles graduated from Fort Hays State in 1991 and began her coaching career at FHSU as a graduate assistant the next year. Scouting St. Cloud State (11-7, 7-7 NSIC) After starting the season 8-0 and vaulting into the US TODAY Division II Coaches Poll, St. Cloud State has gone 3-7 and lost eight of their last ten games. The Huskies, who are locked in a three-way tie for third in the NSIC North Division standings, earned a split on their trip to U-Mary and Minot State last weekend. St. Cloud State owns a semi-potent ofense with a the sixth-best scoring ofense averaging 71.4 points per game while allowing 69.2 points per game, 10th in the NSIC. The Huskies shoot the ball at an above-average rate, connecting on 41.1 percent of their shots from the ield. Their defense has room to improve, letting their opponent shoot 44.3 percent from the ield, which ranks 14th in the NSIC. One of the better defenses at forcing turnovers, the Huskies nearly average ten steals a game with 9.7 thefts per contest. Aided by forcing their opponent into 19 turnovers per game, St. Cloud State is second in the league with a plus-478 turnover margin. As the SCSU scoring leader, Lexy Peterman ranks tenth on the NSIC scoring list at 15.3 points per game. Chelsea Nooker also cracked the top 30 with 11.5 points per contest, and Betsy MacDonald averaged double digits with 10.2 ppg. Peterman is also one of the top rebounders in the NSIC, grabbing 7.5 boards per game. MacDonald, the SCSU lead guard, leads the team with a total of 59 assists, 3.7 per game, but ive of the seven Huskies who do garner consistent playing time average over one assist per game. That said, the Huskies have one more turnover on the season than they do assists, leading to the sixthbest team assist-to-turnover ratio in the conference. About SCSU Head Coach Lori Fish Taking over the St. Cloud State women s basketball program in 2008, Lori Fish is in her seventh season with SCSU and 10th as a head coach. A St. Cloud, Minn. native, Fish has put together a 103-80 record at St. Cloud State. Three years as the coach of Minnesota State, Fish owns a career record of 165-133 and led the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament in her irst season at the helm. Fish graduated from South Dakota State in 1991 then served as a graduate assistant for two years later. Series histories Friday night will be the rubber match between Sioux Falls and Minnesota Duluth after each team earned a victory in their irst two meetings since USF joined the NSIC for the 2012-13 season. The Cougars earned the win in the inaugural meeting, taking down the Bulldogs by an 83-78 margin at home, but UMD returned the favor with a home victory of their own last year, 69-59, over the Cougars. On Saturday night, Sioux Falls looks to stay undefeated against St. Cloud State since beginning NSIC competition. The Cougars emerged victorious with a 57-56 win in the irst-ever meeting at home on Jan. 12, 2013. Last season, Sioux Falls racked up two wins over SCSU, both coming on the road. Most recently, USF went into St. Cloud for the irst round of last year s NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament and recorded a 75-68 win to advance to the quarterinals. Home sweet home With a 10-1 record in home games this season, it is safe to say the USF Women s Basketball team experiences a home court advantage when they play inside the friendly conines of the Stewart Center. The Cougars score more than four points more each game and allow three fewer when playing at home. While the Cougars top scorers don t difer much between home and road games, USF s bench has performed markedly better in front of the Sioux Falls faithful. Traphagen has a pair of 20-win seasons, the most wins in a season for a USF coach with 27 in 2011 and is just the second to advance a USF team to the NAIA quarterinals. Cougars match best conference win total since move to D2 At 9-5 in NSIC play, USF has now matched their highest conference win total since joining the conference in 2012. During their inaugural year in the NSIC, USF inished with a 9-13 conference record and followed it up with an 8-14 campaign in 2013-14. Just past the midway point of their NSIC schedule this year, the Cougars are 26-32 in conference play. Ulmer continues assault from behind the arc With another big performance from deep, senior guard Jaicee Ulmer continues her spectacular season. A native of Canton, S.D., Ulmer connected on seven more 3-pointers this weekend, surpassing 100 for her career and reaching 43 on the season. Her 46.7 percent (43-92) three-point shooting percentage ranks second in the NSIC and 12th in NCAA Division II. In 16 of the 18 games this season, Ulmer has made at 3-pointer and in 13 games she has made multiple threes. In her career, she is shooting 35.6 percent (105-295) on three-point attempts. Varsho among NSIC s best in multitude of categories. Tabbed as USF s player to watch in the preseason conference release, Taylor Varsho has lived up to the name, not only as one of the Cougars leading scorers, but as an all around performer. The junior guard s 11.6 point per game average is 26th in the conference and is second on the team. Her rebounding might be the most impressive part of her game, grabbing 6.7 boards per game, the 12th best mark in the conference and the only guard in the top 20. Her assist average of 3.8 per game is the best on the Cougars and fourth in the conference. Add in 30 steals for a 1.7 average, Varsho is proving that she is one of the best guards in the conference. She is sixth in the NSIC with 2.1 threepoint ield goals made per game and is 12th in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.3. 3
