Gamecocks and Wolverines Look To Take Care of Business. For the Michigan Wolverines (8-4) and South Carolina Gamecocks (8-4), this year s Outback Bowl is the final step in a carefully crafted business trip. And that business has a bottom line. Winning. The team that prevails at Raymond James Stadium will have a season-ending exclamation point a ninth victory and momentum that could carry deep into 2018. We love the Tampa Bay area, Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh said. We love the beaches and the attractions. But we can t lose sight of why we are here. You never know how it s going to turn out in a bowl-game situation, Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said. It generally comes down to the team that is the most dialed in and the most focused. The most fun comes in winning the game. So I told our guys, Let s go have some fun. Let s go win. At first glance, Michigan and South Carolina couldn t be more different in their postseason resumes. The Wolverines are appearing in the 46th bowl game, which ranks 11th all-time in college football history. The Gamecocks have reached their 22nd bowl game although 12 of them happened since 2001, when they posted the first of back-to-back victories against the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Outback Bowl. Stylistically, neither team has displayed a dominant offense. But Michigan s defense, coordinated by Don Brown, has been elite in the Big Ten Conference. The Wolverines have the nation s best pass defense (142.7 yards per game), while ranking third in overall yards allowed (286.6). They are really, really good on defense, Muschamp said. Don Brown challenges you on every snap. We need to get some things going offensively. We ve struggled with the good (defensive) fronts, so we re going to need to block these guys. By Joey Johnston South Carolina s 71st-ranked defense enjoyed most of its success in stopping the run (allowing 146.7 yards per game, good for 43rd nationally). The Gamecocks mostly thrive with efficiency, though. South Carolina is 17th nationally in turnover margin (plus-9), while ranking fourth in fewest penalties (55) and losing only three fumbles all season, all major factors for a team that finished second in the Southeastern Conference s East Division. That s a smart team we re facing, Harbaugh said. The Wolverines will need smart play from their offense. Due to injuries, Michigan has started three different quarterbacks. But Michigan s running game displayed uncommon versatility, featuring three running backs with more than 500 yards rushing for the first time since. After learning about the Outback Bowl matchup, it didn t take long for Muschamp to discover his biggest concern about Michigan. He spotted playmakers all over the Wolverine defense, chief among them sophomore defensive end Rashan Gary, senior defensive tackle Maurice Hurst, senior defensive end Chase Winovich and sophomore linebacker Devin Bush. But the Gamecocks are positioned to finish in the final polls after defeating five bowl-bound teams during the regular season. Offensively, South Carolina revolves around sophomore quarterback Jake Bentley, who has completed 62.4 percent of his passes for 2,555 yards, already the seventh-most productive singleseason yardage mark in Gamecock history. Additionally, Bentley had a stretch of 152 consecutive pass attempts without an interception. The most effective pass-catcher was first-team All-SEC junior tight end Hayden Hurst (41 for 218). Hurst s productivity was needed because the running game suffered with the loss of Rico Dowdle, who broke his leg against Tennessee. Picking up the slack was sophomore A.J. Turner (517 yards), who had two 100-yard rushing efforts in the late season. They play hard, they tackle well and they re fast, Harbaugh said. We ve got our work cut out. Michigan is Michigan, Muschamp said. Get a win here and it s another big step forward for our program. It s time to take care of business.

Coaches Fire Up Crowd At Debartolo Contract Signing Party More than 700 Outback Bowl supporters got to meet the coaches from the University of Michigan and University of South Carolina at the DeBartolo Contract Signing Party December 7th. After spending two hours doing interviews with local media outlets, Wolverine Head Coach Jim Harbaugh and Gamecock Head Coach Will Muschamp mingled with Outback Bowl Sponsors, Club Members and their guests in the newly renovated West Club of Raymond James Stadium. Supporters also got to hear the coaches speak while feasting on food from Outback Steakhouse. Guests even got a chance to meet the now famous Bloom Man and Shrimp Girl featured in the Outback Steakhouse videos on social media. The event was capped-off with the coaches signing a ceremonial contract agreeing to play in the bowl game on New Year s Day.
