Communications Department Victory Field 501 W. Maryland Street Indianapolis, IN 46225 317.269.3542 www.indyindians.com GONE SO SOON: LHP Charlie Morton 22-17, 2nd IL West RHP Charlie Morton (1-0, 1.29 ERA) Tuesday, May 19, 2015 7:05 p.m. EDT Victory Field Indianapolis, IN Game #40 Home Game #23 This season marks the first campaign since 2011 in which both Matt Hague & Chase d Arnaud aren t featured within the organization (or Tribe). The duo combined to appear in 818 games with Indy from 2011-14. LAST TIME OUT Former Mr. Indiana and Mr. Football Clayton Richard made a solid home debut with three runs in 5.2 innings, but it wasn t enough as the Tribe took a 7-4 loss to the Pawtucket Red Sox at Victory Field. THE INDIANS... Have won four of the last six, but are 5-6 over the last 11 games since May 8 at SWB... Beginning April 22, are 17-10 in 27 games with just two sets of back-to-back defeats... Are 10-4 in their last 14 home games after beginning the season at 3-5 through the first eight at Victory Field; The Tribe has also gone 8-3 at Victory Field against non-divisional opponents... Pitching staff has allowed more than two runs in consecutive games for just the second time this month... Were 23-16 after 39 games last season (23-17 after 40). SERIES SHOWDOWN The Indians and PawSox meet for the fifth of six matchups of the 2015 season... The Tribe has gone just 1-3 this season and posted an even 18-18 split in the overall series (2011-current) since taking seven of eight in 2010... Despite the 1-3 record in 2015, Indy has been outscored by just three runs and 15-12 overall... However, the PawSox are 13-for-44 (.295) with runners in scoring position - including 5-for-18 last night - while the Indians have gone just 6-for- 31 (.194) with RISP. THE LEADOFF Five of nine batters to lead off an inning reached safely on Monday and combined to go 4-for-8 with two doubles, a triple and a walk... The Tribe is hitting a league-best.321 (98x305) with 13 doubles, two triples, seven of its 13 total homers and a.398 OBP when leading off an inning... Only Durham (.302) has also hit better than.300 leading off. LEFT IS RIGHT Entering tonight s matchup with southpaw Brian Johnson, the Tribe is slugging.449 (.306 vs. RHP) and hitting.294 against left-handed pitching... The lineup has produced 25 of its 56 doubles on the year, seven of 10 triples and nine of 13 homers and a against left-handed pitching... Gorkys Hernandez (.327), Tony Sanchez (.333), Steve Lombardozzi and Deibinson Romero (.433) are each hitting at least.320 against opposing southpaws (Min. 25 AB). MAY-BE GOOD The Indians are averaging 4.4 runs per game, 9.5 hits per game and lead the IL with a.286 average in May (.247 in April)... The Tribe s pitching staff has also limited opponents to two runs or fewer in 10 of those 17 games, and its 3.03 ERA in the month is fourth in the league. PUT IT ON THE BOARD...YESS!! Indianapolis suffered just its fifth loss when scoring first in games with last night s defeat (13-5)... The Indians have scored 22 runs in the first inning, and aside from a 10-run outburst from Rochester on May 5, have allowed just 14 runs in the opening frame through 38 games (not incl. ROC). GWORK-HORSE Gorkys Hernandez is the only player in the IL and one of just two in all of the Minors to appear in each of the first 39 games of the season (also Ketel Marte, Triple-A Tacoma)... He has made each of his appearances in center field, including 38 starts, and leads the league s outfielders in total chances (93) and putouts (87). WHO NEEDS OF(F) DAYS? Hernandez is the only outfielder in all of Minor League Baseball to appear in 39 games this season. TONY TWO-AND-NOW-THREE BAGS Tony Sanchez doubled and tripled against the PawSox, marking just his fourth triple of his Minor League career, the first since 2012 with Double-A Altoona and his first Triple- A triple... Sanchez has multi-hit efforts in two straight and three of his last four games and is 7-for-15 (.467) with four runs, two doubles, a triple, one home run and three RBIs in his last four games. ELIAS SAYS... Elias Diaz has hits in five straight games and 12 of 16 during the month... He hit just.203 with a.254 OBP in April (17 games) before batting.321 (18x56) with a.418 OBP in 16 games during May. ELIAS BEFORE C EXCEPT AFTER D (H) Diaz, penciled in as the DH tonight, has produced four of his six extra-base hits as the designated hitter, as opposed to catcher... He is slugging.422 at DH and.275 at catcher. NOT A ONE-HIT WONDER Alen Hanson has hits in eight of his last nine games and 13 of 16 in May... He has also produced multi-hit efforts in two straight games, four of his last six, six of his last 11 and seven of 16 games in the month... Hanson is batting.338 with seven extra-base hits in May after hitting.234 with one triple in 20 games in April. HIT-AND-RUN Hanson has also both scored a run and hit safely in two straight games, seven of the last nine and 10 of 16 total games in May... He is tied for fourth in the IL in hits (22) and tied for fifth in runs (12) during the month. Today s Tribe Starter Current Streak: W1 VS. PAWTUCKET - Morton is 0-2 with a 4.02 ERA (7er/15.2ip) and 16 SO/8 BB in three career starts against Pawtucket... He is 0-1, 6.23 ERA (6er/8.2ip) in two outings at Victory Field against the PawSox. W-L-S ERA G GS IP H R ER HR BB SO AVG 1-0-0 1.29 1 1 7.0 11 2 1 0 0 8.355 Notes: Morton is making his third rehab start of the season and fourth career start against Pawtucker... The right-hander began the season on the disabled list recovering from offseason hip surgery and has since pitched in a rehab outing with Double-A Altoona, where he tossed seven shutout innings with two hits and two walks on May 8 at Harrisburg, and a seven-inning start with Indy where he allowed two runs (one earned) on 11 hits with eight strikeouts on May 14 vs. Norfolk... Morton enters tonight s outing having gone 17-9 with a 2.74 ERA (80er/262.2ip) in 46 games (45 starts) in the International League between PIT s and ATL s organizations... He is also coming off a 2014 campaign with the Pirates in which he established a career high of 126 strikeouts in 157.1 big league innings.
