Tue. & Wed., May 11-12 Portland at Washington, 6:30 p.m. both nights QUICK PITCHES... Husky head coach Ken Knutson needs eight more victories to become the winningest coach in UW baseball history. The UW has used seven starting pitchers this season. Four of those seven are true freshmen. Freshmen pitchers have started 28 of 41 games. The UW has stolen 49 bases this season while allowing only 18. MAY No. 16 UW Plays Host To No. 1 Cardinal In Massive Pac-10 Showdown WHAT S UP?: The Washington baseball team (26-14-1 overall, 10-5 in the Pac-10) hosts No. 1 Stanford (35-6, 10-2) in what might be the biggest series at Husky Ballpark since the 1998 Pac-10 Championship series that featured the same two teams. The Huskies, ranked No. 16 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 21 by Baseball America, sit a game and a half back of the top-ranked Cardinal in second place in the Pac-10 standings. The Dawgs are two games ahead of the rest of the Pac. Friday night, game time is 6:30 p.m. while Saturday and Sunday, first pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. All three games will air live on KKNW AM-1150 and Saturday s game will also be telecast live on Fox Sports Northwest. Next Tuesday and Wednesday, the Dawgs host Portland in a pair of 6:30 p.m. non-league games before traveling to USC the following weekend for the final road games of the year. Here s a look at this week, with probable UW starting pitchers: Fri., May 7: Stanford at Washington, Husky Ballpark, 6:30 p.m. RHP Kyle Parker (2-2, 3.98) Sat., May 8: Stanford at Washington, Husky Ballpark, 1:00 p.m. RHP Matt Kasser (2-0, 7.86) Sun., May 9: Stanford at Washington, Husky Ballpark, 1:00 p.m. RHP Tim Lincecum (5-1, 3.74) SERIES HISTORY: Stanford holds a 31-11 series advantage over Washington. However, the Huskies have fared a little better in recent years as the Dawgs are 9-14 over the last seven seasons, dating back to the 1997 Pacific-10 Conference championship series, which the UW won, two games to one, in Palo Alto. The following year, Stanford took two of three in a regular-season series at Stanford, but Washington swept the Pac-10 championship series in Seattle, two games to none. After the Pac-10 merger prior to the 1999 season, the Cardinal took two of three in a series in Seattle. Stanford took all three in 2000 and 2001, with all six of those games at Sunken Diamond. The Dawgs took two of fhree in Seattle in 2002 and, last year, the Cardinal won two of three in Palo Alto. Washington won the opener, 5-3, but Stanford came back to take the next two, 10-6 and 12-11. COACH K : Now in his 12th season in charge of the Washington baseball team, Ken Knutson has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments. Knutson has led the Dawgs to two Pac-10 championships, four Pac-10 Northern Division titles, two other second-place finishes and five NCAA Regional berths. His career overall record now stands at 415-267-2 (.608). With 415 wins, he is the second-winningest coach in UW history, trailing only Bob MacDonald (422). Before becoming the Husky head man in 1993, Knutson served as the Husky pitching coach for eight seasons. In 1985, his UW pitching staff led the nation with a 2.80 ERA. Knutson holds a 201-87-2 (.697) record in home games. He is 177-120 (.596) in Pac-10 games. Knutson has coached 40 first-team All-Pac-10 selections in 11 seasons, and has been named league coach of the year three times. A 1981 All-Pac-10 left-handed pitcher at the UW, he is joined by assistants Joe Ross, Travis Jewett, and Gregg Swenson and undergrad assistant Scott Robertson. Oregon State won the opener, 7-3, thanks in large part to senior catcher Paul Richie, who went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and three runs batted in. Jake Postlewait got his ninth win for the Beavers and Kyle Parker went six innings in the loss. Saturday, the Huskies and Beavers fought throughout before the UW, which entered the ninth trailing 14-13, exploded for 13 runs in the final frame to win, 26-14. OSU had fought back from deficits to tie or take a lead five times, including in the eighth, when the Beavers scored two to get the lead. Washington hammered 11 hits in the ninth, including home runs from Greg Isaacson, Taylor Johnson, Kyle Larsen and Tyler Mach. Isaacson reached base seven times and went 4-for-4 with five runs and five RBI. Larsen was 4-for-6 with six RBI and Brent Lillibridge finished 4-for-5 with five runs. Sunday, Taylor Johnson belted a fourth-inning grand slam to give Washington a 6-1 lead and the Huskies held on for an 8-5 win. Tim Lincecum struck out nine over five innings for the victory and Will Fenton, who earned the win on Saturday, picked up his sixth save. David Dowling allowed one run over three innings of relief. NORTHWEST FLAVOR: As is usually the case, the Husky baseball roster is made up primarily of players from the state of Washington. In fact, 32 of the 36 players on the preseason roster are from the state of Washington, and another, Trent Baysinger, grew up in the city of Moscow, Idaho, just a mile or so from the Washington border. Aside from Washington and Idaho, only two other states are represented on the Husky roster as two players come from the state of Colorado RS-freshman Matt Tucker and sophomore Devin Warner and other from Oregon, freshman James Allan.
