TV: Big Ten Network (Joe Beninati PxP; Billy Jaffe, Color; Fred Pletsch, Reporter) Radio: IMG Sports Network (Al Randall, PxP; Bill Trainor, Color) The Wolverines return to the friendly confines of Yost Ice Arena this weekend to take on Penn State, starting with Friday night s contest at 6:30 p.m. Michigan is winless in its last three games, a streak that began with a 4-0 loss at Penn State on Feb. 8. U-M has been an excellent home team this season, with a 7-1-2 record in 10 games, including a 5-0-2 stretch in the last seven games at Yost. The Michigan defense has been especially stingy at home, allowing a goal less in games at Yost (1.5 goals allowed/game), than overall (2.5 goals allowed/game), and nine even strength goals in 10 games. Penn State is 1-8-0 on the road this season. Junior forward Zach Hyman has been playing his best hockey of late, leading the team with seven points (4G, 3A) in the last six games. Hyman has points in five of those contests, including the primary assist on Michigan s lone goal in a 4-1 loss at Minnesota on Saturday night. Hyman has a career best 10 points (5G, 5A) this season. Hyman was a verbal commit to Princeton before Penn State head coach Guy Gadowsky took the head coaching job at Penn State in April 2011. In 14 games against Guy Gadowsky-coached teams, Michigan is 9-5, including a series split on Feb. 7-8. Gadowsky was the head coach at former CCHA foe Alaska-Fairbanks for five seasons from 1999-2004 before moving on to become the head coach at Princeton. Junior defenseman Andrew Sinelli scored Michigan s lone goal on Saturday night, which was just the fifth goal by a Wolverine defenseman this season (52nd, NCAA). Michigan is one of three teams in the nation without a power play goal from its defensive corps, along with Boston College and Bentley. Michigan will be without Sinelli and Michael Downing on Friday night as the Big Ten Conference office announced Monday that each have each been suspended for one game, under the conference s supplemental discipline process, as a result of separate incidents that occurred in a game against Minnesota on Feb. 15. It is Penn State s first Big Ten victory in program history. Zach Nagelvoort made the start in net for the Wolverines and made six saves, while Steve Racine made 30 stops in 46:42 of action in relief of Nagelvoort. PSU s Matthew Skloff made 32 saves in net for the shutout, as U-M was held scoreless for the second time this season and the first since a 3-0 loss to Michigan State in the GLI on Dec. 28. While this weekend will mark Michigan s first ever games against Penn State at Yost Ice Arena, the Wolverines have played a Division I team from the state of Pennsylvania at Yost before. U-M has played Mercyhurst University (Erie, Pa.) twice at Yost and three times overall (most recently 10/2/10), all wins. Michigan s first game against a Pennsylvania team was a 7-6 win over the University of Pennsylvania on Dec. 29,1975, in a GLI Semifinal at Olympia Stadium. UPenn s program existed from 1965-1978. Today there are three Division I programs in the state, Robert Morris, Mercyhurst and Penn State. After last weekend s series at No. 2 Minnesota, U-M has played games against five teams in the top-10 of the current USCHO. com poll. U-M has played No. 1 Boston College (Oct. 10), No. 6 Ferris State (Dec. 11), No. 7 UMass-Lowell (Oct. 26) and No. 8 Wisconsin (Jan. 10-11, Jan. 31-Feb.1). With 20 points and 8 games remaining in conference play, Michigan sits five points behind Wisconsin, and 12 behind Minnesota, but the Wolverines have played two fewer games than both teams, as well as Ohio State. Michigan has gotten off to slow starts in the last three games, as the Wolverines have been outscored, 5-1, in the first period in the last three contests combined, an anomaly for a team accustomed to strong starts. Michigan has outscored the opposition 21-14 in the first period through 26 games. The Wolverines have led or been tied after one period of play in 21 of 26 games this season. Michigan s penalty killing has been excellent in the second half of the season. Since the start of the new year, the Wolverines are 30-for-34 (88.2%) in 10 games on the penalty kill, holding opponents scoreless on the power play in seven of those contests. Last Friday, Michigan lost for the first time this season when scoring three or more goals in a game, falling to 11-1-0 when scoring at least a trio. Michigan head coach Red Berenson earned his 784th career win on Feb. 7 with a 7-3 victory at Penn State, moving him into fourth place on the all-time on the Division 1 coaching wins list. Berenson passed Rick Comley, who had 783 wins at Lake Superior State, Northern Michigan and Michigan State from 1973-2011. Since the end of the 2012-13 season, Michigan has been stellar in conference play, winning 14 of 20 games (14-5-1), including sweeps against Ohio State and Michigan State in Big Ten play this season and an 8-0-0 run in CCHA regular season play last year. Michigan is 2-0-1 in Big Ten play at Yost this season.

Michigan joins No. 2 Minnesota and No. 8 Wisconsin to give the Big Ten three teams in the USCHO.com poll. Michigan has played 383 games as a top-5 team since the inception of the USCHO.com poll in 1995-96. The Wolverines have a record of 258-92-33 in those contests. Michigan spent 10 weeks in the top-5 this season. The Wolverines are 4-6-3 against ranked teams this season. Michigan defeated No. 4 Boston College on Oct. 10, 3-1, in its home opener, went 1-0-1 against No. 13 New Hampshire on Oct. 18-19, earned a 2-1 win over No. 13 Boston University on Oct. 25, and tied No. 4 Ferris State, 1-1 on Dec. 11. Last weekend, Michigan lost both games at No. 2 Minnesota. U-M has two games remaining against ranked competition, both against Minnesota on March 14-15 at Yost Ice Arena. Goaltender Zach Nagelvoort has played well since making his career debut in net on Oct. 18 at New Hampshire. In 19 career appearances, Nagelvoort is 10-6-2 with a 2.12 goals-against average (13th, NCAA) and a.930 save percentage (11th, NCAA). Nagelvoort has made eight straight starts in net for Michigan since Jan. 10. Nagelvoort is the grandson of Dr. Paul W. Gikas, U-M professor emeritus of pathology and a former faculty representative (1982-88) for the U-M Athletic Department. Freshman forward JT Compher leads the team and Big Ten freshmen with 26 points (11G, 15A) for an average of 1.00 points per game. Compher had two points (G, A) on Feb. 14 at Minnesota to give him 11 points (5G, 6A) in the last eight games. His four-point outburst (2G, 2A) on Jan. 23 at Michigan State was the most by a Michigan player since Oct. 13, 2011, when David Wohlberg had four points (G, 3A) in a 10-3 win over St. Lawrence. Compher also had the the most points in a game by a Michigan freshman in over eight years in that contest. On Nov. 4, 2005, Andrew Cogliano recorded four points (2G, 2A) in an 8-5 win at Notre Dame. With another shorthanded goal in a 5-2 win over Michigan State on Jan. 24, JT Compher leads the Big Ten and is tied for fourth in the nation with three shorthanded goals on the season. Compher had his team-leading eighth multiple point game against Minnesota on Feb 14. Sophomore forward Andrew Copp hasn t missed a beat after returning from the World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden in early January. Copp has produced 14 points (9G, 5A) in his last 15 games overall. Copp has points in 15 of Michigan s 26 games this season and the Wolverines are 10-3-2 in games where Copp registers a point. Copp had a goal and an assist on Feb. 14 against Minnesota. Michigan has played 11 one-goal games this season and has a 8-3 record in those contests. With a goal and an assist for JT Compher in a 5-3 loss to Minnesota on Feb. 14, a Michigan freshman has registered a point in 22 of the Wolverines 26 games so far this season. Freshman forwards JT Compher and Tyler Motte and defenseman Michael Downing have started every game for the Wolverines, while defenseman Nolan De Jong has been out of the lineup in just two games, and forward Alex Kile just four games.
