PITTSBURGH PIRATES (7-9) APRIL 22, 2017 at PNC Park, Pittsburgh, PA --- GAME #17/HOME #8 RHP MICHAEL PINEDA (2-1, 3.44 ERA) vs. RHP JAMESON TAILLON (1-0, 0.90 ERA) THE PIRATES...began this six-game homestand with a 6-3 win over the Yankees last night...returned home Wednesday night from a seven-game road trip to Boston (0-1), Chicago (3-0) and St. Louis (0-3)...Began the season in Boston and dropped two straight before being rained out on 4/6...Swept the Braves in a three-game series in Pittsburgh before being swept three games by the Reds prior to their recently-completed seven-game trip...had a 8-8 record after 16 games last season (9-8 after 17). BUCS WHEN... ON THE BUMP: RHP Jameson Taillon is making his fourth start of the season today...he has been charged with just two earned runs in his first three starts this season (20.0) and out-dueled Jon Lester last Sunday in Chicago to earn his first win of the 2017 campaign...as a rookie in 2016, Taillon produced the second-lowest ERA (3.38) among National League rookie starters; trailing only Milwaukee s Junior Guerra (2.81)...Jameson has pitched at least 6.0 innings in 15 of his 21 career starts with the Pirates and has recorded a 1.84 ERA (98.0ip/20er) in those games. CASHING IN AT PNC: In his 12 career starts at PNC Park, Jameson Taillon has produced a 2.88 ERA (72.0ip/23er) and a 0.99 WHIP...He has limited the oppostion to a.186 batting average in his last eight home starts while allowing two runs or fewer in seven of those eight starts (50.0ip/12er - 2.16 ERA). NUMBER CHANGE: Beginning today, José Osuna will wear uniform #36...He wore #64 in spring training this year and for the first three games of his Major League career. TRIPLE YOUR PLEASURE: José Osuna tripled off CC Sabathia for his first Major League hit Friday night...it marked the first time since 6/24/11 that a Pittsburgh player produced a three-bagger for his first big league hit; Chase d Arnaud tripled off Boston lefty Jon Lester for his first Major League hit in Pittsburgh s 3-1 victory at PNC Park that day. CLIMBING THE CHARTS: With 410 career appearances in a Pirates uniform, Tony Watson has tied righthander Dave Giusti for seventh place on the club s all-time list...among lefties, Watson ranks second behind Wilbur Cooper, who pitched in 469 games for the Bucs between 1912-1924...Elroy Face tops the chart with 802 appearances. WANNA BE STARTING SOMETHING: In their last eight games, Pittsburgh starting pitchers have posted a 2.57 ERA (49.0ip/14er) while pitching six innings on six occasions and into the seventh inning three times...overall this season, the Pirates starters have produced a 3.34 ERA (91.2ip/34er), ranking sixth in the Majors and second among National League staffs behind the New York Mets (3.19). LEANING TOWARD THE LEFT: Last night s game against New York southpaw CC Sabathia began a stretch that has the Pirates scheduled to face a left-handed starter four times on this six-game homestand...the Bucs are 2-4 this season in games against lefty starters and are hitting.194 (31-for-160) overall against LHP in 2017...David Freese has gone 5-for-13 (.385) with a homer against lefthanders this season and Andrew McCutchen has gone 6-for-19 (.316) with a homer. BUCS/YANKS: This series marks just the second season in which the Bronx Bombers have played at PNC Park...In 2008, the two clubs split two games here on June 24-25 before being rained out on June 26...The Yankees returned to Pittsburgh for a make-up game on 7/10/08 with the Pirates winning a 4-2 decision. INTERLEAGUE ACTION: The Bucs are 1-3 against the American League this year, having lost three games to the Red Sox in Boston prior to beating the Yankees Friday night...the Pirates went 9-11 during interleague play in 2016, posting a 3-7 record at PNC Park...Since the start of the 2013 season, Pittsburgh s 49-35 (.583) record in interleague play is the second-best among National League teams behind the Cubs 47-33 (.588) mark. WADE PUTTING UP LEBLANCS: Bucco lefty Wade LeBlanc has made three straight scoreless appearances (4.0ip) and has been charged with just one earned run in his last 9.1 innings of work...in 13 games since being acquired by the Pirates last September, LeBlanc has posted a 2.08 ERA (21.2ip/5er) while holding opponents to a.162 batting average (12-for-74). 4 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER: The Pirates are 7-0 when scoring four or more runs and 0-9 when being held to three or less...in 2016 the Buccos went 68-31 when plating four runs or more and 10-52-1 when scoring three or fewer. CLOSING TIME: Tony Watson has converted all five of his save chances this season and has gone 20-for-23 in save opportunities since taking over the closer role last year on 8/2...Since the start of the 2012 season, Watson has made the most appearances among any relief pitcher in the National League (367) and the second-most in the Major Leagues behind Cleveland righthander Bryan Shaw (371). ON THIS DATE IN PIRATES HISTORY April 22, 2001: Jason Kendall gave the Bucs their first walkoff win at PNC Park with a two-run homer off Chicago s Jeff Fassero in the 10th inning. The Cubs took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th thanks to a leadoff homer by Gary Matthews. But in the home half of the inning, Kevin Young delivered a pinch-hit single and Kendall followed with a two-run blast to give the Bucs the win.
