Arslan Wrestling Tour For thousands of years, wrestling has been a traditional sport in Mongolia. The traditional form of Mongolian wrestling dates back to the Hunnu Empire (1-7 AD). Wrestling is one of the country's Three Manly Skills, the other two being archery and horseback riding. Often, the military of Genghis Khan would use wrestling as a means to stay in shape, as well as be prepared for close combat. Genghis Khan and later Khans enjoyed the sport and it was incorporated into local festivals, also known as Naadam festival. Mongolia holds many smaller local Naadams throughout the summer, as well as a large national Naadam festival held in the capital city, Ulaanbaatar. The festival includes horse racing, archery, and wrestling competitions to test the Three Manly Skills. During the national Naadam, usually between 512 or 1024 wrestlers competes in the National Stadium. The largest wrestling competition of Mongolia was held in 2011 and the event currently holds the Guinness Record for the largest wrestling competition. In the summer of 2013, I left the US to pursue an international teaching job in Mongolia. The country's passion for the sport of wrestling was a major deciding factor for me to make the move. Having competed, as well as been a coach at a few high schools and numerous wrestling camps, wrestling has been a large part of my life for a very long time. Some of the wrestling highlights since I ve been here include training with NCAA champions originally from Mongolia, getting invited to compete in a international tournament in Russia, learning about Mongolian traditional wrestling and meeting traditional national champions, as well as wrestling in the Freestyle Mongolian Open. Not only has Mongolia been a great place to be a wrestler, but it is also where I met my wife. She manages and operates the tour company, Selena Travel Mongolia (For more information about Selena Travel Mongolia, please visit www.selenatravel.com ). They have been organizing and managing tours in Mongolia for nearly two decades. Her and I are working together to organize a trip specifically designed for athletes passionate about the sport of wrestling, who are interested in experiencing a different culture while improving your wrestling skill set and exploring different types of wrestling from other countries. During this 12-day tour, you will experience and witness traditional Mongolian nomadic lifestyle while living with a nomadic family in the countryside. Moreover, you will have opportunities to try out Brazilian Ju-Jitsu (BJJ) and practice with Mongolian practitioners of BJJ. Last but not least, a practice session with local wrestlers or with a Mongolian wrestling coach will be organized during our days in the countryside. Basing on a tournament within our group, few of us will have a chance to wrestle Mongolian wrestling in a local Naadam festival tournament. Here is the detailed day by day itinerary, and also inclusions and exclusions of the tour package:

Naadam Festival Opening ceremony Start the day with Naadam festival Grand Opening ceremony at the central stadium. Then we will see the wrestling, archery and ankle bone shooting competitions. Departure from UB, Mongolia After breakfast, you will be taken to the airport for your flight to home. If you have a tour extension in Mongolia, tour will start this morning. Few more notes: 1. If you decide to join the camp, please purchase an international travel and medical insurance. This is a prerequisite. 2.

A little more about Mongolian wrestling: The reason there can be so many competitors at a single competition has to do with the unique rules of Mongolian wrestling. First, there are no weight classes, time limits, or out of bounds. Men averaging 50 kg could match up with another twice or triple his size. Other differences from folkstyle and Olympic wrestling include the clothing worn during matches, the location of matches, and the criteria for victory. During a match, Mongolian wrestlers wear a short sleeved jacket known as a zodog, small briefs, known as shuudag, and traditional leather boots, known as gutal. The matches generally take place outdoors in a field, or on soft ground. To win a match, a wrestler must get his opponents upper body, knee, or elbow to touch the ground. Winning enough matches can award titles such as falcon, elephant, or lion.
