Wildcat Nation, Here s the Lawrence North athletics weekly update for the week of February 6, 2017. Lawrence North Athletics Community Partner of the Week http://www.edmartin.com/
Lawrence North Student-Athletes of the Week Brooke Atkins, Swimming & Dheontae Unseld, Wrestling Sophomore Brooke Atkins qualified for the IHSAA state meet in three events this weekend at the North Central sectional. She broke her own LN school and sectional record by over three seconds in winning the 200 IM! If that wasn t enough, she broke LN s oldest girl s swimming record when she won the 100 backstroke! She also qualified for state in the 200 medley relay with Sam White, Edin Hall, and Jazzy Kitt. Junior Dheontae Unseld won his first round match at the Pendleton Heights regional, coming back from a 9-8 deficit to get a 2 point take down with only 3 seconds left to win the match, 10-9! The win guaranteed him a spot at the New Castle semi-state this weekend. Great job, Brooke and Dheontae!
Boys Basketball: The Wildcats (12-6, 3-2) had a rough week, taking on two very difficult opponents. On Thursday, the Cats played in a three overtime thriller against MIC rival Carmel at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum, but came up short 50-48. Congrats to Ra Kpedi, named to the North Side Madness All-Academic Team! On Saturday, the team traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan to play in the Red Hawk Showcase. The Wildcats were paired up with undefeated and 2 nd ranked team in Michigan, Grand Rapids Christian. The Cats hung tight most of the game, but the Michigan team pulled away late to beat our boys, 51-39. Next up is an away MIC game against Ben Davis on Friday night followed by a home game against Hamilton Heights on Saturday. Photos courtesy of Defro/BGHP.
Girls Basketball: The Wildcats (13-8, 4-3 MIC) finished the season last week with a hard fought loss against #1 North Central, 52-43 in the sectional semifinals. Post season recognition has already started to come in, as senior Destiny Perkins and sophomore Trinity Brady have been named to the All-Marion County team! Congrats, ladies! Cheerleading/Fans: Check out some great pictures by Defro/BGHP from the North Side Madness Game against Carmel. Congrats to VJ Griffin, who was the Penn Station halftime eating champion, and also to Emma Sherman, who won the dance contest! Also, big shout out to Tyrone Frazier, working behind the scenes for the MIC Network!
Swimming & Diving: The girls swimming and diving team placed 3 rd at the North Central sectional, with many lifetime best performances turned in by our Wildcats. The 200 medley relay team of Brooke Atkins, Sam White, Edin Hall, and Jazzy Kitt placed 2 nd and earned a spot in the state meet by going under the state time standard, and 3 rd fastest time in LN school history! Sam White also turned in a state time in the 100 breaststroke, finishing 2 nd and going the 2 nd fastest time in LN history, missing the school record by.01! She s got a shot at getting that record at the state meet. And finally, Brooke Atkins won two events in school record time, the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke. She broke her own record in the 200 IM from a year ago, but the 100 backstroke record was held for 22 years by All-American Melissa Bromley. The oldest swimming record on the books now belongs to Brooke! Great job, Wildcats! Best of luck on Friday night at the IU Natatorium! Photos by Mr. Penrose.
Wrestling: The Wildcat wrestlers turned in a great performance on Saturday, finishing 5 th at the Pendleton Heights Regional, two points ahead of township rival Lawrence Central, who had beaten us by a half of a point at sectional. Seven Wildcat wrestlers punched their ticket to the New Castle semi-state on Saturday. The Magnificent Seven are: Karsten Harshbarger at 106, Deacon Pettiford at 120, Kenny Miles at 126, Dheontae Unseld at 132, Adrian Gardfrey at 138, James Despain at 152, and Robert Samuels at 285.
