Now that the holidays area winding down its time to start looking ahead to the New year. And with a new year we have some new things going on in the Chapter. First, we have a new Chapter Couple Bill and Deidre Sprinkle. They are very excited about being the Chapter Couple and we need to support them all we can in the coming year. Bill and Deidre already have a project they want to pursue this year..deidre is also our new Treasurer. We have some things that we are going to continue into the new year. We are going to continue with the food drive we stated last year. This was a great success last year and I want to continue it as long as there is an interest in the chapter. Another thing that was successful last year was the Ride-Coordinator-ofthe-Month. We got to go on a lot of new rides and see new things thanks to all the folks that chose a month to sponsor. Be thinking about what month you want this year. Bill, Deidre, Gerry, Peggy and I will be attending the OPS meeting at the end of January. I m sure there will be lots of information that will need to be passed back to the chapter. So on February 21 we ll have a Chapter Planning meeting to discuss ideas for the coming year, info from the OPS meeting, and anything else that may be of interest to anyone. So, mark your calendars! Until next time, Randy D. Chapter A2 meets the 1 st Tuesday of each month at Capt n Stevens Seafood Restaurant on Hwy. 150 & Friendship Church Rd. in Lexington We Eat at 6:30 Meet at 7:30

We would like to Welcome our newest members to the chapter --- Nick and Lynn Nicholson of the Reedy Creek community. We look forward to many miles and Smiles riding with you. Chapter A2 is open to all visitors, come in and check us out and make A2 your new home. If you do not own or ride a Honda Goldwing or Valkyrie motorcycle, you can still join the Gold Wing Road Riders Association as an Associate member and become part of our Extended Family. RIDER EDUCATION Stop the Machine! Did you see that car? He came from behind that 18-wheeler and ran the red light. I almost hit him. Has this ever happened to you? Ever wonder just how fast you can stop your bike? With a few good techniques and a little practice the answer is a lot faster than you think. The two main techniques are squeezing the front brake rapidly instead of grabbing it, and taking advantage of the weight shift to use even more front brake. The practice takes just a few minutes in a parking lot about three times a year. As you start braking, about half your weight is on each wheel. If you apply both brakes hard without grabbing the front brake, your weight will shift forward and you can squeeze the front brake even harder, while you let up a little on the rear. It takes only about half a second for your weight to shift so you can add more front brake. It is because of this weight change that about 70% of your braking power is on the front. When all the extra weight shifts forward, the front tire gets harder to lock, while the rear gets easier to lock. If you ever lock the front tire, release the front brake and come right back down on it. This is exactly the opposite of what you want to do with the rear if it locks. You can release a locked rear if you re perfectly straight, but if you ve turned sideways and you unlock the rear wheel, you can do a high side not something you do for fun! A parking lot is the perfect place to practice-an empty parking lot that is. No need to terrorize the populace while they re trying to use the lot. Start out at 10 15 miles per hour. The techniques are the same for any speed, but you don t need as much room to practice in if your speed is lower. When you go back to the streets, you need to add only one more technique looking out for the other guy. If you re braking hard, this means checking your mirrors before you start to make sure you re not being tailgated. If you re in a situation where you might have to brake suddenly, cover both brakes to cut your reaction time to about half. This shaves a few feet off what by now is your already-impressive stopping distance. Rain can affect your stopping distance more than it affects your technique. You can t stop as quickly in the rain. Because you can t brake as hard, not as much of your weight shifts forward. That means braking less hard overall and using a smaller percentage of front brake. Otherwise, techniques are the same. Having some jerk with the brains of a carburetor pull out in front of you while you re turning around in a parking lot adds another factor stopping in a curve. When this happens, straighten the handlebars and the bike. Then stop. Don t try to mix the two. These few techniques and a little practice should get your stopping off to a good start. Ride Safe Gerry

Tim s Tech Tip Everyone should be installing all that Safety Chrome that Santa dropped down the chimney!! Since we are working on the Wing anyway we could do some of those odd jobs that was put off during the peak riding weather. Also, if you may not be riding for a while during this time of the year, you may want to do some preventive measures to ensure that the bike is protected and ready to ride when the opportunity to ride arises! I am guilty of letting my bike sit since the Butner ride, because of sickness and lack of time!! If the bike is going to sit for very long, here are some things we should do for our rides. An oil change will get the impurities out of the engine, that could cause harm while sitting in there. For a longer down time a gas stabilizer, ran through the fuel system may be a good idea. If you start the engine occasionally, be sure to run it long enough to get the moisture out of the crankcase and exhaust system. Keep check on the water level in the battery while using a Battery Tender type charger, will have the battery ready. And don t forget to add some Decon around your bike to keep the rats from building a nest in your air cleaner. A2 Chapter Couple of the Year Bill & Deidre Sprinkle Dear Friends, We are so excited about the upcoming year. We are looking forward to continuing out chapter visitation and fellowshipping with old friends while making many new ones. The chapter will continue donating canned foods to the senior pantry of Davidson County. Each donor will receive a ticket per can, and as we did last year, we will have a drawing for $100 at the end of the year. We are looking forward to the chapter co-hosting the second annual "Ride for Angels" for Hospice of Davidson County. This ride will be July 18, 2009; rain date July 19, 2009. Please mark your calendars for this date. Lastly, as Chapter Couple, we would like to introduce the chapter to the work of the Horizons Residential Home Care located in Rural Hall. A representative from the Horizon Home will be our guest speaker at our January Meeting. We would like to ask the chapter to join us in making 2009 a better year for a 15 year old resident of the Horizon home named Christina. Christina has scoliosis and needs a new wheelchair which could cost between 8000 to 10000. We would like to ask you to help us raise money to go toward this wheelchair. Christina also needs smaller items such as clothing etc. as well as to be remembered on special days such as holidays and her birthday. We will be giving you more information in coming newsletters and meetings. In closing, we would like to thank you for giving us the honor and privilege to represent you as your chapter couple. You are a special group and we love you all.
