Brisbane District Golf Association Inc. 61st Annual Report - 2010
President s report On behalf of the Management Committee I am pleased to present the 61st Annual Report of the Association. Sadly the latter half of last year and January 2011 has seen extensive damage both structurally and financially in varying degrees to the Clubs of the Association. Assistance that may be provided by the BDGA is included for discussion in the agenda of the Annual General Meeting. The Committee has continued to look at a number of facets of our operations. These include the web site which was in need of an overhaul, the format of some of our match events, and streamlining fee collection for tournaments. Payment of Capitation fees to Golf Queensland. Over a period of some years there has been assertions by Golf Queensland (and formerly the Queensland Golf Union), that the BDGA has been in arrears in payment of capitation fees, with a contention that a full year had been missed. Obviously the Association its self can not be in arrears, as the BDGA collects the fees from the Clubs and forwards them to the State body, so the claim was more correctly that the Clubs were in arrears. The BDGA has always maintained that fees were paid as agreed and generally there were no arrears. The exception being if a Club was late in paying, the fee may have been forwarded some weeks late. I am pleased to report that following a number of meetings with Golf Queensland over the last 2 years the matter has been formerly ( and finally) resolved. An agreement has been signed between the BDGA and GQ that states that a year has not been missed, fees will be levied and paid as per the current ( unchanged ) system and that the BDGA is not in arrears,. As the BDGA clubs financial years finish on varying dates from June to December, it is agreed that all capitation fees for the District will be remitted to Golf Queensland by 22nd December annually. I would like to thank the Board and President of Golf Queensland, Tom Crothers, who personally investigated some 35 plus years of records, for their cooperation and endeavours in resolving this matter. My thanks to the following people; The Treasurer, Glen Sellick, for his vigilant control of our finances, Match: To Dave Seeley, Bruce Nicol and the match committee for the efficient running of Association events, the selection of representative teams and the varied duties required in the conduct of the BDGA Pennants, Junior Development: Lex Hughes continues with his sterling endeavours to help foster Junior Golf in the District and ensure that the Clubs receive the BDGA grant, Media and Web site: Greg Carey for his efforts in getting the various event programs to clubs, Secretary, Warwick Nicol. Taking over from Dave ( and Cecily) Cullen was always going to be a huge task. Warwick has done an excellent job and has initiated some changes that will prove beneficial in time. A number of people gave assistance to the BDGA in various capacities throughout the year. It is most appreciated and I thank them. Finally I would like to thank all the Clubs and Delegates for their continuing support of the Association. STEVE KING PRESIDENT 2 BDGA 61st Annual Report
Match Report Season 2010 was one of mixed results for the match committee. The early part of the year saw another successful inter club pennant season run and congratulations go to the winning clubs in each division and also the pennant players of the year in each grade and division. Our results in both the intra and inter district pennant however were no so glowing and the association looks forward to a better result next year. I would like to thank all the players who so willingly represent the association in these events and also thank my fellow management committee members for the time they gave to support these teams. A special thank you to Mr. Bruce Nicol and Mr.Greg Carey for their support in the functioning of the match committee your input was greatly received and appreciated. I look forward to a competitive and fruitful 2011 season and wish all member clubs every success in 2011. Dave Seeley Match Chairman. BDGA 61st Annual Report 3
Brisbane Amateur & Mid Amateur Championships The 2010 Brisbane Amateur Championship was played over 18 holes stroke play, in conjunction with the Brisbane Mid-Amateur Championship, at Keperra Golf Club on Sunday the 22nd. November 2010. The course was presented in very good condition and our thanks and congratulations are extended to the Course Superintendent and his staff. Thanks are also extended to the Club Management for the assistance they gave in the running of this prestigious event in the B.D.G.A. calendar. These Championships have for the last couple of years been open events and it was pleasing to see a number of players from our neighbouring districts competing in this event. Once again competition numbers were down, however, we had a larger field than 2009 and hopefully the player numbers will keep on increasing. The Mid- Amateur Championship for 2010 was won by Timothy Deakin (Mc Leod) with the fine score of one under par of 71, he was closely followed by Warwick Oxenford on 73 and Andrew Boulter, Pete Wouters and Daniel Farnes all on 74. The Brisbane Amateur Championship was won by Nicholas Smits(Helensvale) with a great score of five under par 67, he was followed by Chris Wood 69 and Daniel McGraw 70. I wish to thank the members of the B.D.G.A. Management Committee, who spent many hours organising and conducting this event. David Seeley B.D.G.A. Match Chairman 4 BDGA 61st Annual Report
Brisbane Junior Championships Brisbane Junior Report The annul junior development grant took a different format this year by part of the grant being used for four players from each club within the district would have a prepaid nomination into the Brisbane Junior Championships, with seventeen clubs within the district there should have been a large number of nominations for this event. WIth a gross, nett and teams event some clubs failed to take advantage of these conditions. There were sixty players nominated from within the district and players from the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. These Championships were played at Wynnum Golf CLub and some fine scores were recorded. The Championship was won by S. Daly with a Gross score of 64. Runner up was D. Hoare with a 66 Gross (on a count back). The Nett event was won by A. Wilkin on a count back from W. Taylor both with a 67 nett. Other good scores were also recorded which shows the juniors are showing a keen interest in the game. Next year the Championships will be held at Redcliffe in February 2011 with the same prepaid conditions. All clubs should take advantage of these conditions and push for Their juior s to nominate for this event. Lex Highes BDGA 61st Annual Report 5

Pennants 2010 BDGA PENNANTS REPORT 2010. The pennant format continued from previous years with the exception of the Division 4 competition. By agreement with the 5 incumbent Division 4 clubs, a single match against each other team was played with a final at the venue of the team relegated to Division 4 from the previous season. This was apparently popular with teams, and the BDGA has agreed to rotate the venues for 2011 where possible in Division 4. Inter Association Team The 2010 Queensland Mens Inter-Assocation Teams Event was held at the Yeppoon Golf Club. This year s event was taken out by the South East Queenland Golf Association with the Brisbane District Golf Association (BDGA) finishing a disappointing 7th in defence of their title won in 2009.. The BDGA was represented by: Scott Edmiston (Capt) (Nudgee) David Pickering (Oxley) Josh Preston (Wynnum) Steve Sinclair (Virginia) After a short plane flight and bus trip, the players arrived at the well presented Yeppoon Golf Club. The course was in immaculate condition and it was clear we were in for a challenging few days. The first round was the fourball and playing the course for the first time Steve and Josh recorded a 3 under par 68 for the BDGA to trail Darling Downs Golf Association by two shots after they fired a 5 under 66. Round two were the foursomes with Steve and Josh again recording the best score for the BDGA with a 75. Sunshine Coast found the course to their liking firing a 3 under par 68 which is an excellent score in this form of the game. This catapulted Sunshine Coast into the last day with a two shot lead over South East Queensland. The BDGA then had some work to do heading into the final day of singles, being 7 behind. The final day began with some rain which quickly cleared and play got underway on time. Unfortunately Brisbane were unable to find form with both Steve and Scott returning scores of 76 leaving the BDGA down the order. South East Queensland played well on the final day to take the title by 7 shots ahead of the Gold Coast. A big thank you must go to Gurney Clamp and the Central Queensland Golf Association, Eddie and the team and the Yepoon Golf Club for their hospitality, and also Trevor Tougher and his team on the way the course was presented. From the moment we arrived we were looked after in every way and to Jay Townsend and Golf Queensland for a professionally run event. We would like to thank the BDGA for the opportunity to represent our district at this event. We all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will be talking about the event for years to come. Kind regards, David Pickering BDGA 61st Annual Report 9
BDGA Trophy Days BDGA Trophyt Days In 2010 there were 8 clubs that took up the opportunity to host a BDGA Trophy day at their club. A special thank you to these clubs. The BDGA provides clubs with prizes to give out on this day. McLeod Golf Club Report A reasonable field of 143 players competed for the BDGA trophies over three grades on the day, where the course was a bit damp after rain the night before. Greg Ross won A Grade with a score of 39 points, Ian Morgans won B Grade with a very good score of 41 points and John Shenfield won C Grade in a close count-back with 38 points. Runners Up were Bill Burns (10) 38 ocb, David Boyd (11) 38 and Paul Flood (29) also with 38. These days are usually well supported by our membership, and McLeod really appreciates the support received from the BDGA over many years 10 BDGA 61st Annual Report
Media & Communications Report This year has seen the BDGA move to a new Website. This project has taken longer than expected and the cost at the end of the project was more than we had originally envisaged. However the end result will be a much more interactive and user friendly product than was available before. Individuals and Clubs will be able to register and login to the new website and results, such as Pennants, will be available much quicker than before. One of the main criticisms of the old website was that it was difficult to find all the information required for individual events and Pennants. The design of the new website means that all of the information relating to a particular event will be found in one place. Individuals will be able to nominate and pay for events directly on the website. This will make administration of BDGA events much simpler, quicker and convenient. Clubs will also be able to login to the BDGA website to update their information relating to the BDGA such as names of Club officials, Delegates names and membership numbers. Perhaps the most useful change will be how Pennant results are entered. The host Club will be expected to login to the website on the day of Pennants and record the results of the fixture. The signed copy of the results sheet, which will still be the official results, will be sent to the BDGA secretary as verification of the results. However the direct entry of results will enable information about all aspects of Pennants to be accessed quickly. Clubs will be able to see the results from other matches in a short space of time. So the mad scramble that happens towards the end of the Pennant season where Clubs are ringing other Clubs to get results will be a thing of the past. Club delegates, and their proxies, will have a separate area of the website to access. This will enable delegates to get information about delegate meetings, minutes and any information or news related to the running of the BDGA. This will also enable delegates to easily relate information to the Management committee or other delegates as needed. The effective promotion of BDGA events continues to be an issue for the Management committee. We have tried a number of strategies over the last few years including paid advertising and direct emailing of Club members. Perhaps the most successful strategy is where the BDGA has sent information to Club managers and asked them to send the information directly to their Club members through email. This has worked well in the Clubs where the Club managers have sent the information on. However it seems difficult to get all managers to send the information. Hopefully the majority of Club members will register to the new website which will give the BDGA a database to work with. Hopefully 2011 will be the year where the use of the BDGA website enables us to better communicate with all Club members and BDGA events will become better subscribed to than in the last few years.
