BOSTON RED SOX (1-1) at PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (1-1) Thursday, April 9, 2015 7:05 p.m. ET Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA RHP Justin Masterson (0-0, ---) vs. RHP David Buchanan (0-0, ---) Game #3 Road Game #3 TV: NESN Radio: WEEI 93.7 FM, WCEC 1490 AM (Spanish) THE FIRST TWO: Boston suffered its fi rst loss of the season last night, dropping a 4-2 decision at the Phillies in the second game of 2015...Boston has outscored the Phils 10-4 in the two games, with pitchers posting a 1.59 ERA (3 ER/17.0 IP), including 4.0 scoreless and hitless IP of relief. Boston s 3 ER allowed mark the club s fewest through 2 games since 2001 (2 ER)...Despite going homerless last night, the Sox still have as many as 5 HR over the fi rst 2 games of a season for the fi rst time since 2002. BROTHERLY BEGINNINGS: While Monday marked Boston s fi rst season-opening game against the Phillies, the club had started its season in the City of Brotherly Love 10 previous times (4-6), all against the Philadelphia Athletics... The last such occurrence came 61 years ago at Connie Mack Stadium on 4/13/54, the last year Philly had an AL team. These clubs will meet 3 more times during 2015, all in Boston from 9/4-6...The Red Sox lead their all-time Interleague series, 31-22. FITTING BEGINNINGS (& ENDINGS): This marks the 100th anniversary of the 1915 season, in which the Red Sox opened in Philadelphia facing the A s (2-0 loss) and then wrapped up a 4-games-to-1 World Series championship on the road at the Phillies Baker Bowl on 10/13/15 (5-4 win). NATIONAL DEBUTS: This is Boston s first ever seasonopening series against an NL team...in fact, this is the only Interleague set to start MLB s 2015 regular season in the 3rd straight year that AL and NL teams have faced off at the start of regular season play after never happening before. Boston also begins its home slate against the NL, facing the Nationals from 4/13-15. DAVID AND CHASE: With Philadelphia s offseason trade of Jimmy Rollins, the active players with the longest continuous tenure for any MLB team are now David Ortiz with Boston and Chase Utley with Philly...Both of those players debuted for their current teams in 2003. PHINALLY BACK: Monday marked Shane Victorino s return to Citizen Bank Park for the 1st time since July 2012, the end of his 8-year tenure with the Phillies...He was on the DL for the Red Sox/Phillies series in 2013. BACK WITH BOSTON: Tonight will mark the fi rst appearance as a Red Sox for Justin Masterson in 2,080 days since 7/29/09 (2.0 IP in relief vs. OAK)...Two days later, he was sent to the Indians in the deal that brought Victor Martinez to the Red Sox...He was Boston s 2nd-round pick in 2006. With Rick Porcello (last night), Masterson (tonight), and Wade Miley (tomorrow night at NYY), the Red Sox have 3 members of their season-opening rotation that were not members of the 2014 team. ONTO NEW YORK: Following tonight s game, the Red Sox will bus to New York City in advance of a 3-game weekend series against the Yankees beginning tomorrow night. Boston leads visiting teams with 28 wins at the current Yankee Stadium, going 28-28 there since 2009. SHUTOUT START: Boston began its 115th AL season on Monday with an 8-0 shutout win in Philadelphia...The Sox are now 56-58-1 all-time on Opening Day (excluding G2 of twinbills in 1903, 1948, 1982)...It was the club s 75th opener on the road (33-41-1) and 5th straight road opener. The 8-run margin marked Boston s 3rd-largest shutout win in a season opener behind a 10-0 win at NYY in 1919 and a 9-0 victory in 1995 vs. MIN. The Sox were 1 of 6 teams this season with an Opening Day shutout, the most in MLB history (Credit: Elias). With 7.0 scoreless innings, Clay Buchholz became just the 2nd Red Sox pitcher since 1944 to hurl at least 7.0 scoreless frames in his fi rst career Opening Day start, along with Pedro Martinez in 1998 (7.0 IP). OPENING NOTES: On Monday, David Ortiz made 13th career Opening Day start, 1st at 1B...It was his 11th Opening Day start as a Red Sox (12 at DH), tying Harry Hooper for 7th on the team s all-time list (Yastrzemski 1st with 22). Dustin Pedroia ranks 2nd to Ortiz among current Red Sox with 9 Opening Day starts for the team, all at 2B from 2007-15...He has the 2nd-most Opening Day starts at 2B in club history, 4 shy of Bobby Doerr (13), who yesterday celebrated his 97th birthday. DEEP THOUGHTS: Boston matched a club record in with 5 Opening Day homers, also 1965 at WSH (Betts, 1; Pedroia, 2; Ramirez, 2)...The club did not have a 5-HR game all of last season...boston became the fi rst team ever to hit at least 5 HR while pitching an Opening Day shutout. Pedroia and Ramriez were the 1st Sox teammates ever with multi-homer efforts on Opening Day... Before Monday, the last Sox player to produce a multi- HR game on Opening Day was Carlton Fisk in 1973. Pedroia was just the second 2B ever with multiple HR in a season-opener, also ARI s Felipe Lopez in 2009. At 22, Mookie Betts became the youngest Red Sox to hit a HR on Opening Day since Tony Conigliaro in 1965 (20)...Since 2012, the only major leaguers to hit an Opening Day homer before turning 23 are Betts, Mike Trout (2014), and Bryce Harper (2013, 2015). Ramirez hit the 3rd Opening Day grand slam in club history (also Jack Clark in 1991, Carlton Fisk in 1973). YOUNG GUNS: At 22 years old, Mookie Betts was Boston s youngest Opening Day leadoff hitter since Rico Petrocelli in 1965 (21) and also the club s youngest Opening Day CF since Tony Conigliaro in 1964 (19). With Betts and Xander Bogaerts born within a 1-week span from 10/1-7/92 Boston was the fi rst AL team to start players age 22 or younger at both CF and SS on Opening Day since the 1989 Mariners, who started CF Ken Griffey Jr. (19) & SS Omar Vizquel (21). IGNITION EXPERT: Dustin Pedroia, who went 3-for-5, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI on Monday, has now hit safely in all 9 career openers from 2007-14 (.421, 16-for-38, 2 2B, 4 HR, 7 RBI, 2 BB), the longest Opening Day hit streak by a Red Sox since Carl Yaztrzemski hit in 13 straight openers from 1968-80... Pedroia and Jimmy Rollins are the only players with a hit on Opening Day in each of the last 9 years from 2007-14. Pedroia is the only Red Sox in the last 100 years to hit safely in each of his first 9 Opening Day games, all in consecutive years. REHAB PLANS: Joe Kelly (right biceps strain) and Koji Uehara (left hamstring strain), both on the 15-day DL retro to 3/27, are scheduled to pitch in rehab for Single-A Greenville on Saturday night against Augusta...Kelly is slated to start. IT CAN HAPPEN AGAIN: In 2015, the Red Sox attempt to repeat their worst-to-fi rst title run of 2013...That year, the Red Sox joined the 1991 Twins as the only teams ever to win a World Series one season after fi nishing in last place. In fact, the last six World Series Champions missed the playoffs the previous year: 2014 Giants, 2013 Red Sox, 2012 Giants, 2011 Cardinals, 2010 Giants, 2009 Yankees...The 2008 Rays also reached the WS after going 66-96 in 2007 (Credit: Elias Sports Bureau). AT THE HELM: John Farrell returns in 2015 for his 3rd season as Red Sox Manager...He guided the Red Sox to the World Series title in 2013, his 1st year as skipper, when he was runner up for the AL Manager of the Year Award...On 2/21, the Red Sox extended Farrell s contract through the 2017 season with a club option for 2018. Aside from Chili Davis, hired as Boston s hitting coach in October, the rest of the coaching staff joins Farrell in returning for a third season in their current roles.
