PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (11-11) vs. LOS ANGELES DODGERS (13-12) Sunday, April 30, 2017 Dodger Stadium 4:10 p.m. EDT Game 23; Road 12 RHP Nick Pivetta (NR) vs LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (0-4, 4.64) LAST NIGHT S ACTION: The Phillies lost, 6-5, in walk-off fashion at Dodger Stadium Starter Zach Eflin did not factor in the decision as he allowed just 2 runs over 7.0 innings allowing only 4 hits and not walking a batter Trailing 1-0 in the 4 th inning, rookie Brock Stassi hit an opposite-field 3-run HR the team s first 3-run HR of the season to give the Phillies a 3-1 lead The Phils added single runs in the 5 th and 8 th innings to take a 5-2 lead into the 9 th inning Hector Neris, however, allowed home runs to each of the first three batters he faced to allow LA to tie the game Corey Seager s single to left field scored the winning run from 2 nd base Rookie Andrew Knapp went 3-for-4 including his first career HR. THE LAND OF OPPORTUNITY: Right-hander Nick Pivetta is making his MLB debut today He becomes the fourth Phillie to make his MLB debut this season, joining 1B Brock Stassi, C Andrew Knapp and right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. This is the first time since the 1970 that the Phillies had at least four players make their MLB debut before the end of April That year it was five players: SS Larry Bowa, 2B Denny Doyle, OF Sam Parrilla, C Mike Compton and OF Jim Hutto Additionally, Leiter s debut marked the second time in Phillies history that a father-son combination both played for the Phillies His father, Mark Sr., pitched for the Phillies from 1997-98 They joined Ruben Amaro Sr. (1960-65) and Ruben Amaro Jr. (1992-93; 1996-98). THREE S A CHARM: Brock Stassi s 4 th -inning HR last night was significant not just because it gave the Phillies a lead in the game, but it was also the first 3-run HR for the Phillies so far this season Maikel Franco has two grand slams, but Stassi was the first to hit one with two runners on It had been 16 years since the Phillies went at least 21 games into a season without a 3-run HR In 2001, the team did not hit one in their first 36 games of the season with the first coming on May 15 when Brian L. Hunter broke the team s streak Current bench coach Larry Bowa was the team s manager then. ROOKIE POWER: Last night, Brock Stassi slugged the Phillies first 3-run HR of the season and Andrew Knapp clubbed his first career homer It was the first time that two rookies had homered in the same game for the Phillies since May 29, 2016, when Tommy Joseph and Tyler Goeddel did it. GLOVE IS ALL AROUND: Entering play today, the Phillies have the 2 nd -best fielding percentage (.990) among all National League teams (5 th -best in MLB), behind Miami (.993) Their eight errors are 2 nd - fewest, again trailing only the Marlins six errors The Phillies outfielders, collectively, have yet to make an error making Philadelphia the only NL team and one of only two teams in all of MLB to not have an error from it s outfielders yet (Yankees) Freddy Galvis ranks 2 nd among all NL shortstops with a.989 fielding percentage (1 E, 90 TC), behind only SD s Erick Aybar (.989 fielding %, 1 E, 92 TC). CESAR THE DAY: Among all National League 2nd basemen, Cesar Hernandez ranks 1 st in runs scored (19) and 2 nd in hits (30), HR (4), total bases (48) SLG % (.522), OPS (.895) & multi-hit games (11) and is T-2 nd in extra-base hits (9), trailing only WSH s Daniel Murphy in each category. BE LIKE MAIK: Maikel Franco has gone 32 consecutive plate appearances since his last strikeout (4/20-current), the longest streak of his career Franco is averaging 3.86 pitches per plate appearance this season, up from his 3.56 career average coming into this year (2014-16) Additionally, Franco has increased his walk rate to 8.4% (8 BB, 95 PA), up from 6.5% (67 BB, 1,023 PA) in 2014-16 He has also decreased his strikeout rate to 10.5% (10 SO, 95 PA), down from 16.7% (171 SO, 1,023 PA) in that same span Franco, who slugged his second grand slam of the season on April 26 versus Miami, is the first Phillie in club history with multiple grand slams in the month of April. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE: The Phillies lead the National League and rank 3 rd in the majors with an average of 3.98 pitches per plate appearance this season (3,290 pitches, 827 PA) Last year, the Phillies ranked 27 th in baseball as they averaged 3.81 P/PA (22,830 pitches, 5,992 PA) This comes following a spring in which they ranked fifth among all teams with 128 walks in 36 games (3.56 BB/G) Philadelphia s 3.56 walks per game rate was their highest in any spring training since online data was tracked starting in 2006. ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD: The Phillies have seen a marked improvement in offensive production from their outfield this season As a group, they are batting.285 (74-260) with a.356 OBP (26 BB, 3 HBP) and.442 SLG % (16 2B, 2 3B, 7 HR) Philadelphia s.285 AVG ranks 3 rd among all major league outfields (best: ARI,.314 AVG), their.358 OBP ranks 5 th (best: WSH,.407) and their.447 SLG % ranks 8 th (best: WSH,.536) Last season, the Phillies outfield ranked 27 th in AVG (.242) & OBP (.311) and 30 th in SLG % (.366). POSITIVE VIBES: The Phillies have outscored their opponents 103-95 in 22 games so far this season (+8 run differential) Their +8 run differential ranks fifth-best in the National League and is tied for 10 th in the majors This marks the first time since 2011 that the Phillies have had a positive run differential through 22 games.
