NEW YORK METS (18-11) vs. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (11-19) Saturday, May 9, 2015 Citizens Bank Park 7:05 p.m. EDT Game 31; Home 14 LHP Jonathon Niese (2-2, 2.40) vs. RHP Aaron Harang (3-2, 2.35) LAST NIGHT S ACTION: The Phillies defeated ace Matt Harvey and the New York Mets, 3-1, at Citizens Bank Park... Left-hander Cole Hamels picked up his 2 nd win of the season after allowing just 1 ER over 7.0 innings (4 H, 2 BB, 8 SO)... Ryan Howard gave the Phillies an early lead with a 2-out RBI single in the 1 st inning... New York tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the 4 th inning on 2 hits and a run-scoring wild pitch by Hamels with 2 outs... Howard took the lead right back in the bottom of the 4 th with a booming leadoff solo HR to left-center field... Ben Revere added an RBI single in the 5 th... Ken Giles pitched a perfect 8 th inning before Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 112 th save as a Phillie, tying the all-time franchise record. HAVE YOUR CAKE & EAT IT TOO: Tonight s starter, Aaron Harang, is celebrating his 37 th birthday today... This will mark the 3 rd time Harang has thrown on his birthday (2005, 2009, 2015) and first since 2009 when he beat the Cardinals, 8-3, in Cincinnati... The 6-foot-7, 260-pound right-hander is the first Phillies starter to pitch on his birthday since Kyle Kendrick celebrated his 26 th bday on the mound against the Houston Astros on August 26, 2010 at Citizens Bank Park... Harang also looks to become the first Phillies starter to pick up a win on his birthday since, you guessed it, Kyle Kendrick in 2007 against the San Diego Padres (14-2 win at CBP). CLOSING TIME: Jonathan Papelbon picked up his 6 th save of the season last night and the 112 th of his Phillies career, moving him into a tie with Jose Mesa for the most in Phillies franchise history... Papelbon is already the Boston Red Sox all-time saves leader (219), so with one more save, he will become one of only two pitchers in MLB history to hold the saves record for two different clubs (Robb Nen 108 SV for MIA, 206 SV with SF)... Papelbon has 331 career saves, which ranks 13 th on MLB s all-time list (Rollie Fingers ranks 12 th with 341 saves). RYAN POWERED: After hitting.175 with zero home runs in his first 11 games this season, Ryan Howard is batting.278 with 2 2B, 1 3B, 6 HR and 13 RBI over his last 15 games (since 4/21)... During that period, he ranks T-3 rd in MLB in home runs with SEA s Nelson Cruz, WSH s Bryce Harper and NYY s Mark Teixeira... Only CIN s Todd Frazier and LAD s Joc Pederson have hit more (7 HR)... Howard also ranks 9 th in the majors in slugging % (.685) and T-9 th in extra-base hits over that stretch. HOME BOYS: Phillies starting pitchers clearly like sleeping in their own beds, as they have displayed a drastic split in ERA at home versus the road... In 13 games at Citizens Bank Park, Phillies starters have thrown 10 quality starts and combined to post a 3.16 ERA (27 ER, 77.0 IP),.207 average against and just 16 extra-base hits (6 2B, 1 3B, 9 HR)... On the road, the starters ERA is more than twice as high at 6.80 (68 ER, 90.0 IP), which is the worst road starters ERA among all National League clubs... In their 17 road games, Phillies starters have allowed a.325 opponents average and 42 extra-base hits (26 2B, 4 3B, 12 HR) while throwing only four quality starts... On a side note, Phillies starters have only pitched 7.0 or more innings four times this season... Cole Hamels has done so three times (exactly 7.0 IP each) and Aaron Harang once (8.0 IP)... The Phillies are 4-0 in those four starts. BROAD STREET BULLPEN: Philadelphia s bullpen has posted a 2.93 ERA this season, which is the 4 th -lowest mark among all National League clubs... They have combined to throw 92.0 innings as well, 5 th -most in the NL (1 st : COL, 95.1 IP)... Philadelphia has four pitchers who rank in the top 25 among all NL relievers in pitches thrown this year: Justin De Fratus (1 st, 318), Jake Diekman (5 th, 257), Ken Giles (T-16 th, 232) and Dustin McGowan (23 rd, 220). DOMINANT DUO: Ken Giles and Jonathan Papelbon have been on an incredible roll when they both pitch in the same game Since Giles made his debut on June 12, 2014, the Phillies are 31-4 (.886) in games in which the duo both appear, including wins in each of the last 19 (since 8/26/14) The tandem s combined stats in those 33 games are as follows: 0.74 ERA (6 ER, 73.1.1 IP), 0.74 WHIP (16 BB, 38 H), 10.31 SO/9.0 IP (84 SO) and 1.96 BB/9.0 IP. BIG PROBLEMS WITH THE BIG APPLE: The Phillies snapped their four-game losing streak against the Mets and their five-game losing streak to Matt Harvey last night with their 3-1 victory... Philadelphia needs one more win this weekend to earn their first series victory over the Mets since May 9-11, 2014 (0-5 in 5 series since)... Additionally, the Phillies have lost each of their last four home series against the Mets, going 4-13 over their last 17 matchups at Citizens Bank Park (last home series win vs NYM: 4/8-10/13, 2 games to 1)... 11 of the last 22 games (50%) between the two teams have been decided by one run (Phillies are 4-7 in those games)... Last year, the Phillies tied their single-season franchise record loss total to the Mets, going 6-13 in their 19 games... They have posted 13 losses against the Mets only five times in club history: 1970, 1971, 1972, 1987 and 2014... Philadelphia and New York also played six extra-inning games against each other in 2014, setting a new single-season record between the two clubs (previous: 5, 3x, last: 1974).
