Mark your calendars and save the date. We will pass on further details and sign up information when it is available. BOARD MEETING NOTES 1-11-17 BOD meeting at Green Tea Restaurant, Farmington. Attendees; Rick Avery, Paul Silverio, Nancy Elliott, Chris Malse, Dave Walstrom (out going Golf), Dee DiMauro, Cheryl Woodin, Dave Irwin and George Duffy (out going Social). Membership Dee/Nancy: Rick did contact Tom Alsop concerning the idea to have 2 open houses instead of the golf show due to the amount of time and work that goes into the golf show with little return in new membership. Tom would not give us the permission to do so. Cheryl volunteered to call Tom Thursday morning and let membership and BOD know the results. The price to have open house at Tunxis has been $1100. Reducing cost by offering less food and ordering off menu were discussed. Nancy had reached out to Tower Ridge and Hawks as alternative spots to hold an open house. The suggestion was made to have a second open house as a 9 and dine event to cut costs and be an option to pursue. A vote was taken to go ahead with the golf show if Tom does not allow chapter to do 2 open houses and keep the first year fee. Idea of promoting the open house through free town papers and Nancy has been researching that. Paul had a great suggestion to include a youtube video or picture clip to run on meetup and facebook sites so interested people could click on link and get a better understanding of our events and the fun we have. Nancy had suggested advertisement on facebook as another option. Social Chris was recognized for doing a great job as co-chair in taking on the position and arranging for many activities. Saturday is bowling 5:30 pm at Lessard Lanes in Plainville have 16 hoping for 20. Superbowl Sunday will be at Jane Griffin s Lake House in Glastonbury details to be worked out. The brunch and movie was fun Eight members attended had a nice brunch then realized that we should have dined earlier due to the start times of the movies. Simulator golf Bethany has been set up for 2-18-17 Four Seasons 5p-7p golf for $20. 3-4-17 another Simulator golf event has been set up at Tee it up in Bristol 6pm to whenever. Discussion of planning open house at Chris Cotes for possibly 3-18-17 Rick is working on. A suggestion to have a wine tasting in the winter would be good. Handicaps/Dave Irwin not much to report not in season yet to get scores. Golf Paul has booked: 4-29-17 Opening Day at West Woods (eat there); 6-11-17 Simsbury Farms picnic at Linda Zabors. 7-23-17 Keney Park hopefully eat there in new club house ; 9-22- 9-24 Tri Chapter event in Cooperstown NY (Leather Stocking golf course). Discussed having a Ryder cup event in August possibly with Boston or our chapter only. Memorial tournament for Bill Reilly at Portland West discussed doing on Friday night and the BOD thought maybe better on Saturday so more members could attend. George spent some time with the Fairfield chapter at their Christmas party and they want to do more events with our chapter. George will invite to next golf meeting. (Dee, Nancy, Sue and Linda) all said we could do a pic nic at their homes. Discussed utilizing the golf magazine card like we did last year for Hookey days. Dave Walstrom suggested that someone needs to clean up Treasurer email and Rick said he would take care of. ~Cheryl Woodin, Secretary ABOUT OUR MEMBERS Happy Birthday to these members: Terrie Burke - 01/06 Sue Christolini - 01/09 George Duffy - 01/11 Carolyn Garthwait - 01/19 Nancy Hammond - 01/14 Steven Lemieux - 01/23 Nicole St John - 02/14 Judy Unsworth - 01/21 Barbara Wysocki - 02/14 These members are up for renewal: (date shown is last day of membership) Nancy Clark - 01/31/2017 Welcome newest members: Chris Ratto - Joined 12/16/2016 These members recently renewed: Salvatore Scurto Our chapter currently has 93 members.

TM The most important shot in golf is the next one. - - Ben Hogan American Singles Golf Association January, 2017 Current and Past Issues at SinglesGolf.com/TheNextShot TM The New Year and New Chapter Leaders The question s been asked before: why do geese fly in V formation? Answer: Because they don t know any other letter of the alphabet! But seriously, why do they fly in V-formation you ask? Geese are pretty smart. They conserves their energy. Each bird flies slightly above the bird in front of him, resulting in a reduction of wind resistance. The birds take turns being in the front, falling back when they get tired. In this way, the geese can fly for a long time before they must stop for rest. In the same way, local chapter leaders only lead for one year at a time. Then, someone else takes their turn at leadership. So we welcome our new chapter presidents for 2017 (a list of our new presidents will be posted in the February issue of this newsletter). And if you re new or old to ASGA, this is a great time to make your chapter even better by helping in the planning and implementation of social, golf, membership and communication events. To get an idea where you might fit-in best, see the chart at www.singlesgolf.com/organizationalchart and also look at what s involved with each position at this website: www.singlesgolf.com/chaptermanagement Better yet, simply go to your new chapter president and simply say, I m here, how can I help out? Wanting to Meet More Singles? One of my favorite jokes has a punchline: it could happen. More on that later. So on the serious side, do you really want to meet more singles? Well, it could happen! Years ago, last century, back in the 90 s, the original club in Charlotte found out a way to attract new members to their chapter. They ran an annual Love on the Links golf tournament. That title alone got everyone s attention. Who doesn t like love and who doesn t like the links? And we re not talking sausage here. This event was run the weekend around Valentine s Day. Golf and Valentine s was marketed together and guess what? The media covered it. Why? Because it was something of interest to their readers. Readership in newspapers is way down but people who pay to subscribe still read the paper. The idea is to get the newspaper to send out a reporter to cover your event and run some color photos on the front page of the Life or Features section. Since readers believe articles at a 100 times rate that they believe advertising, the truth gets out about ASGA and before you know it, the phone starts to ring or we get more visitors to the website and more people join your local chapter. Lil ole Charlotte hit 275 members at one point. So to get some bearing on how this can work for your chapter, go to www.singlesgolf.com/loveonthelinks and see if members in your chapter want to do this to grow your chapter. Yes, it could happen. Now, back to my joke that ended in the punchline, it could happen. Did you hear the one about the two Irish men who walked out of a bar one night? Yes, it could happen! ASGA in Hawaii Ritz-Carlton Kapalua Kapalua Golf Courses Bay and Plantation February 18-25, 2017 Event details at www.singlesgolf.com/hawaii First, word is airline rates are high. Other word is, flights to Hawaii actually drop this month. So continue your online search and if you see any great offers, please notify AS- GA at info@ Singles- Golf.com. So now, imagine being in Hawaii in the dead of winter. Your friends are on the mainland freezing their tails off. You, in your 80-degree weather and summer shorts, are enjoying some of the best views imaginable. Hit a bad shot, no problem, just look towards the ocean and see whales auditioning for Pacific Life commercials. And then, there s the hotel, the Ritz- Carlton Kapalua. You can t beat the Ritz. They love us so much they re pitching-in their $48 breakfast each morning! We ll play the Bay and Plantation Courses, the latter being the site of the PGA tour s Tournament of Champions in January, 2017. In addition, we ll play Ka anapali, one of the island s most popular courses, not far from the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua. The hotel s website: www.tinyurl.com/ritzkapalua To register for this Hawaiian experience, close your eyes and think what it will be like to feel those 80 degree sun rays hitting you in

... Continued from other side American Singles Golf Association January, 2017 SinglesGolf.com/TheNextShot the middle of February! www.singlesgolf.com/hawaii is the site! Tremblant / Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada Tentative Dates July 16, 17, 18, 19, 2017 I believe it s been a good 18+ years since we last visited Tremblant, about 90 minutes outside of Montreal. We had a small group of about 24 people but we drank Canada Dry. We were such a young organization then and only 24 attended. They have two hilly courses: The Giant and The Devil. And the town itself offers so much. Tremblant.ca is the virtual website but we re looking to do a non-virtual visit next year and they promise much cooler weather than we had this summer. So make a note on your calendar, talk to your friends, talk it up, down and sideways. Website will be up late Winter 2017. River Cruise Survey: 229 Say Yes! Paris, France September/October, 2018 We ve already made some inroads with Le Golf National, site of the 2018 Ryder Cup competition. They welcome members of ASGA to play the Ryder Cup course immediately after the close of the 2018 Ryder Cup. Dates for the 2018 Ryder Cup are September 28-30. This event is two years out and will be the first river cruise ever offered by ASGA. In a busy week before Christmas, ASGA surveyed its membership to see the level of interest. Not surprisingly, 229 members would definitely be interested in a river cruise in 2018 and 94% felt the Seine River (see below itinerary) would be the river to cruise. In addition, nearly 60 members indicated they would be willing to place a $500.00 non-refundable deposit if asked. Our hopes are to buy-out the ship by filling-up 49 cabins, which will take no more than 98 members to do so, a lesser amount if some room by themselves. By buying-out the ship, we ll have more latitude on certain things and can certainly party ASGA-style without having people look at us wishing they were single! (LOL) Although we re not officially announcing it yet, the pieces are being assembled and we want to put together another awesome experience for you. We anticipate visiting Versailles, historic monuments in Rouen, the English Channel villages of Etretat and Honfleur, Jumieges Abbey, one of the great Benedictines of France, Chateau Gaillard, Claude Monet s home and a lot more. At our halfway point on the cruise on the Seine River, we ll visit the D-Day beaches including Omaha and Normandy. A once in a lifetime opportunity, by definition, only occurs one time so this may just be it for you! So, talk it up. Think about whom you d like to room with to cut some cost. It will be a couple of months before the full website, details, etc. are posted. In the meantime, keep your eye on the ball and the event websites. A New Newsletter: Breaking News This newsletter, The Next Shot, is the official national newsletter produced monthly at the first of each month. A new newsletter is Breaking News, that provides to you breaking news when it happens, which essentially means, we don t want to wait until the first of the month to announce certain things. www.singlesgolf.com/breakingnews is where you can go for past issues. So our first issue of Breaking News went out before Chistmas. All newsletters from the national office go out by email. So make sure your current email address is listed with us by going to www.singlesgolf.com/icontact.php Airbag Recalls: Do You Qualify? One out of every six cars on the road has a potentially defective airbag made by Takata. Less than 20% have been replaced. Some states, mostly southern states in hot, humid areas, and models have priority over other states.
