TENNESSEE 4-H CONGRESS PRESS RELEASE The 4-H Youth Development Department has created a press release for you to use in your local newspaper to announce your county delegates trip to Tennessee 4-H Congress. The press release is a general overview of the purpose of Congress and the activities and events the delegates will participate in at Congress. The press release can be found here: Press Release Please read the document carefully as blank spaces have been provided, such as county and delegate names, in order to personalize the press release to better reflect your county delegation's experiences. This is a Word document. Simply delete the lines and type in the appropriate names. Please note, if you have delegates that are competing, running for office, etc., you are encouraged to expand the next to the last paragraph to announce those accomplishments. You are also encouraged to work with your 4-H Congress county reporters on this project. An Extension Specialist will be working with these delegates at Tennessee 4-H Congress to teach them how to write articles and deliver public addresses regarding their Congress experience. Incorporating their personal experiences from this premiere event would be an appropriate and more meaningful addition to the press release. Please let me know if you have any questions. Please feel free to contact me if you want to double check on the arrival of your portfolio(s). Please do NOT plan on bringing your portfolios to the TAE4-HW state meeting in Clarksville. REMINDER: 2016 4-H Camp Promotional Brochures and Distribution The procedure for 4-H Camp promotional brochure distribution was sent to counties via email in November. 2016 4-H Camp brochures continue to be available for distribution, and County Extension Offices can get them through the normal UT Extension publications request procedure (email: utiapubs@utk.edu). These brochures can be used for both Junior Camp and Jr. High Adventure Camp. The publications' numbers are: Austin 4-H Center, Greeneville - SP 770-A Ridley 4-H Center, Columbia - SP 770-B York 4-H Center, Crossville - SP 770-C The brochures are the same as last year, with the simple addition of the publication number. SUMMER 4-H CAMPS REMINDER Much of the following information was sent previously via email and previous e-newsletters (Tennessee 4-H Ideas). Junior 4-H Camp Junior 4-H Camp this year, and every year, is Where Champions Are Made. Resources to help counties prepare for camp will be posted on https://utia.tennessee.edu/4h/camp%20resources/ Forms/AllItems.aspx Camping groups should select and train teen and adult leaders, as well as work with the 4-H centers in formulating camp agendas and selecting educational activities. The base camp fee is $275 ($290 for credit card users) 4-H Jr. High Adventure Camp - Development of camp agendas and themes and selection of educational activities have been occurring through the regions in cooperation with the 4-H centers. In addition, regional camping groups should select and train teen and adult leaders. Regional planning committees should check with 4-H centers for the base camp fee. Counties should make Jr. High Adventure Camp a priority this year as a way to keep the flame alive, and grow your county 4-H program. 4-H Jr. High Adventure Camps, in recent years, have been extremely creative and fun, thanks to our Regional Planning Committees! Don t let your Jr. High 4-H members miss out on this wonderful experience! 8
SUMMER 4-H CAMPS REMINDER (continued) 4-H Target Smart Shooting Sports Camp (W.P. Ridley 4-H Center, July 5-8) This is a statewide shooting sports camp for grades 5-9. Fee is $265. Participants select one in-depth focus on hunting, archery, muzzleloader, rifle, or shotgun. Participants should have received some prior training before registering for this camp. Disciplines are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Counties are expected to make sure that their campers are adequately supervised by bringing an adult leader with them or make arrangements with another county. Check with your regional office on conference assistant (CA) applications (due in the state 4-H office by May 1). CA applications can be downloaded and/or printed by clicking on the Application for Leadership Roles at Camps/Conferences link at https://4h.tennessee.edu/ Pages/forms_materials.aspx. Counties should register their participants through SUPER. Deadline to register in SUPER is May 15. 4-H Electric Camp (University of Tennessee-Knoxville, June 28 July 1) Electric Camp is a fun-filled, rewarding adventure in electricity held at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The camp features learning centers staffed by electric utility professionals. Each learning center will use hands-on activities that allow the 4-H members to learn by doing. Electric camp is for youth enrolled in 4-H who are in grades 6-7 as of January 1 of the current calendar year and 7th graders may return to participate this year. The cost is $265. Members do not have to be enrolled in the electric project to attend the camp, but they should have an interest in this area. Check with your regional office on conference assistant (CA) applications (due in the state 4-H office by May 1). State Livestock and Meats Judging Contests in Knoxville The state 4-H livestock and meats judging contests have been set for Tuesday, June 7, in the Animal Science arena at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Each region is eligible to send four teams to each event. The All Star Beef Backers Contest Do you what an opportunity to win $500 for your county 4-H program?? Then fire up those grills, because July is beef month in Tennessee! The Tennessee Beef Industry Council needs your help supporting the month of July full of beef events. In an effort to enhance beef sales and consumption the Tennessee Beef Industry Council is encouraging all counties to participate in the All Star Beef Backer Contest. This contest is designed to foster a good working relationship with local grocery stores, participants, and consumers in efforts to advance beef in the state. The County 4-H Clubs will set up interactive educational booths at local retail outlets and provide consumers with information. This project can be as fun and creative as you chose to make it. The Tennessee Beef Council will provide counties with beef promotional items, such as recipes and signage. Counties are encouraged to advertise the event and hold an enter-to-win giveaway. The contest will run from July 1-31, 2016. Each county must submit an evaluation form and pictures to the Beef Council by August 15, 2016 to be considered in the running for the $500.00 prize. More than Meat Drawing Contest Do you like to draw and exhibit your creative side? If so, we have just the contest for you!! Cattle supply us with more than just flavorful beef. Did you know that 99% of every animal slaughtered can be used? Other parts of the animal utilized are known as by-products. Examples of by-products include baseball gloves, toothpaste, gelatin, etc. The Tennessee Beef Industry Council and Tennessee 4-H is challenging you to construct a picture that displays how cattle benefit the environment and/or promote the by-products derived from cattle. All entries must be on 14 X 22, poster paper. There will be four age divisions. Division 1: Grades K-3 (Clover Buds) Division 2: Grade 4 (Explorer) Division 3: Grade 5 (Junior) Division 4: Grades 6-8 (Junior High) Winners in each age division will receive a prize of $100.00 and be published on agriculture social media outlets as well as printed publications across the state. Entries may be submitted to your local County Extension Office or to Janna Sullivan at the Tennessee Beef Industry Council. The submission deadline is July 1st, 2016. Lights, Camera, Action... The Mooive Beef Industry Video Competition Do you want an opportunity to share your beef story and promote a thriving industry?? The Tennessee Beef Industry Council has developed a video contest for you to tell others about beef. The objective is for contestants to generate a video that advocates for beef and educates the consumer audience. You must create a video that describes a farm to fork scenario of how beef makes it to the grocery store. Contestants must be in grades 5-12, as of January 1st.
