Principal Notes We are now in the middle of the third quarter. Progress reports are available today through Standards Score. This is always a difficult time of year for the students. They are indoors more than they would like to be and there are no vacations for a while. Teachers are working to keep the students busy and get a lot accomplished before the end of the third quarter. Our 8 th grade boys and girls teams are in the Padre Serra Tournament. We had an awesome pep rally Wednesday to cheer them on. I know many families are planning to attend the games and show the St. Matthias school spirit. I hope you are able to join us as well. Thursday, Feb. 26, the girls play at 8:45 PM Saturday, Feb. 28, the boys play at 5:45 PM Both games are at Mt. Mary University. See the flyer in the mailer. We are starting strategic planning for the school. We will have a couple of surveys next week for school families and parishioners to complete. The data we collect will help us in our planning for the next 3-5 years here at St. Matthias Parish School. Mrs. Susan Booth Update on Mrs. Bishop Mrs. Bishop will be returning from her maternity leave after Easter break. This was a longer leave than she anticipated. Her daughter, Elizabeth Ann, is doing well, but she will not take a bottle. This is what has delayed the return. Thank you to Sr. Rita Jadin for staying on longer than expected. 2014-2015 Yearbook Yearbook order forms went home with your child last week. Order forms are due back to the school office by March 19, 2015. Yearbooks are $11 each. Please submit your money, cash or check with the order form. Checks must be made out to LIFETOUCH. Yearbooks may also be order online at www.ybpay.lifetouch.com with the Yearbook ID Code: 11300515. If your child did not receive an order form or misplaced it, please have them stop by the office to pick up a new one. Thank you!

Jump Rope for Heart Jump Rope for Heart envelopes are due school by Friday, February 27 th. Hot lunch/ala carte We do offer ala carte to all students grades 2-8. Students have the opportunity to purchase additional items to go along with their hot or cold lunches. We offer a variety of items: yogurt, chips, cookies, bagels, and juice just to name a few. Students may also purchase a second entrée, most which cost $2.00. Since the hot lunch program cooks in our kitchen, we have a little more flexibility with offering these. We are also adding hot options to our ala carte next week. Please see the flyer in this mailer that lists our options and costs. 8 th Grade Graduation Pictures Graduation pictures for the 8 th Grade are scheduled for Thursday, March 12 th. This is a dress up day for the 8 th grade only. Forensics Coach Needed Forensics is a public speaking activity for grades 6, 7, and 8. Students prepare a speech or reading and attend competitions at local schools. St. Matthias has had a Forensics Team for more than 20 years, and students have brought home many awards over the years, including State trophies. This team is a lot of fun and the kids are really great. We are looking for an assistant coach to help students practice and attend meets on weekends. We practice Thursdays after school in Steiger Hall. Meets run on Fridays and Saturdays in February and March. I have been working with the Forensics team for 17 years and I plan to continue even though my children have graduated from St. Matthias. I have two excellent practice coaches, but I m hoping to find someone who would like to learn the ropes and take on some of the team duties, especially if my work schedule should change. An ideal situation would be a parent with children in the younger grades who would be willing to stay with the team for several years and understand the program by the time his or her children reach middle school. However, any help would be welcome! I would be happy to answer any questions, and you are welcome to attend a practice to take a look at the program. Please contact me at annekbrown@sbcglobal.net or 414-704-6759. I will train a potential coach no experience necessary!

IOWA Assessment St. Matthias Parish School will be participating in the IOWA Assessment for grades 1-7 from April 14-22. Please try to schedule appointments outside of these days. Also, it is important for students to get a good night s sleep and to eat a nutritious breakfast. Parking Lot We have a lot of cars driving in and out of the parking lot during AM drop off and PM pick up. I realize we have a few drivers who have not been following the rules. I have tried to address issues with drivers as I see it or with a phone call later during the day. I am looking for parents who would be willing to help in the parking lot during these times to remind people of the correct procedures. If you would be available to help out, please contact Mrs. Booth at (414) 321-0894 or at sbooth@stmatthias-milw.org. Technology Survey St. Matthias Parish School Technology Committee invites you to take a short survey on technology use in your home by both you and your children. As we move forward with technology in our school, your input is very valuable. To take the 5 minute, anonymous survey, follow the link at http://www.quia.com/sv/689248.html All input will be gathered until the survey closes on Friday, February 27, 2015. Inclement Weather St. Matthias Parish School will follow the decision of the Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools in closing the school for inclement weather. Please listen to the local radio/television stations. Please do not call the school, parish center, or staff members at home. Palermo s Pizza Fundraiser Pizza Sale order forms went home last week! Checks should be made payable to St. Matthias Home and School. The sale ends on Thursday, March 5th.

Basket Raffle Donations Needed It is time again to begin the collection for the festival basket raffle. Last year the basket raffle raised $3,671.00 for the Home and School Association to support all the good work the H&S does for our children. We collect money from school families and pool all the funds to purchase goods to fill theme baskets which are then raffled off at the Parish Festival in August. Please consider donating to this worthy cause. If you are writing a check, please make checks payable to St. Matthias Home and School Association. We need your help to keep building on our success. Finally, please let us know if you are interested in helping to shop for basket items or putting them together. Please have donations to school by Friday, March 20th. If you have any questions, please contact Daryl or Julie Webb at jstachnik@wi.rr.com 2014 FACTS Tuition Payment Instructions As you start to gather your information for your 2014 tax return, parents may be able to take a deduction for private school tuition by filing Schedule PS with your Wisconsin Tax Return.
