1. The range is located on NM Highway 6, 10 miles west of I-25 at the Los Lunas exit. Heading west from Wal-Mart, look for the mile marker 23 sign. The gate is ½ mile past it. The gate is on the north side of the highway and can be identified by the yellow gate posts. 2. There are 2 gates that must be opened when visiting the range. One key is used for the locks on both gates. Before you receive a key, you must have attended the class based on the NRA Gun Safety Rules, received the Gun Safety Rules brochure, and attended this Range Orientation class. Retain this literature for reasons explained in the paragraph pertaining to guests. You will also receive a range pass which must be prominently displayed on your person at all times when using the range. 3. When turning off Highway 6 onto the driveway, there is only room for 2 vehicles between the gate and the roadway. Please do not spend a lot of time here. Open the gate and enter as quickly as possible to prevent the possibility of a backup on the highway. Immediately close and lock the gate unless there is another member behind you because there are cattle in this area. If you don t recognize the member, you may ask to see his/her range pass. If a guest follows you in another vehicle, YOU are responsible for closing and locking the gate. 4. The road to the 2 nd gate is approximately ¼ mile long. Please stay on the road because the property on either side of the road belongs to other landowners. We are restricted to the legal easement which is clearly defined. There are free ranging cattle in this area and THEY have the right-of-way. There are also pockets of deep sand off the road in which a passenger car might become stuck. 5. Upon entering the range property, close and latch the second gate behind you. It is not necessary to lock the second gate at this point. If you are the last person to leave the range at day s end, make sure you lock the gate then. 6. There is a flagpole near the entrance to the range property. Flags flown from this pole are used to communicate important messages. If a RED flag is displayed, the range is HOT! This means that there are other people at the range who are engaged in live fire activities. You may use your firearm when the red flag is displayed. If no flag is displayed, DO NOT fire until you have made absolutely sure, beyond a doubt, that no Page 1
one else is at the range. There may be times when maintenance, construction, or repair work is going on, but these will be scheduled in advance and the membership alerted. When you are satisfied that no one is on the property, it is your responsibility to remove the red flag from the locked box at the base of the flagpole and hoist it up the pole. If you are the last person to leave the range at day s end, lower the red flag, stow it in the box and lock it. 7. DO NOT approach the firing line with a LOADED firearm, even if you have a concealed weapon permit. Do not load your firearm until you are at the firing line with your firearm pointed downrange and are ready to fire. This is important! It s for your safety and for the safety of others around you. 8. The first person to arrive at the range on any given day of general shooting automatically becomes the Range Officer. The range officer ensures that all safety procedures are being followed at all times. The range officer coordinates shooting sessions and target retrieval. After a specified amount of shooting time, the range officer issues a verbal CEASE FIRE command. Each shooter then removes the magazine from his or her firearm, opens and locks back the slide on semi autos or the cylinder on revolvers. The shooter then makes sure the chamber is empty, lays the firearm on the shooting bench, and steps back from the firing line. When the range officer is satisfied that everyone has complied, he issues a verbal Range is Safe command and shooters may proceed to the target area for retrieval and replacement of targets. NO ONE MAY TOUCH A FIREARM WHILE SHOOTERS ARE DOWNRANGE! Violation of this critical safety rule is cause for expulsion from the club! When the range officer observes that all shooters have returned to their places behind the firing line, he issues a verbal Range is hot command. Shooters may then approach the firing line, load their firearms, and fire at will. The range officer and the other shooters should agree on a specified amount of firing time. 9. When the designated range officer leaves the range, he will appoint another person to act as the range officer. If you are asked, you must verbally accept or decline. If you are not comfortable in the role of range officer, you may ask someone else who is more experienced to act in your place. As range officer, you must be tactful but firm. Do not be offended if the range officer points out an infraction of the safety rules to you. It s for your own safety and the safety of those around you. Each range must have a range officer when 2 or more shooters are present. Page 2
10. During organized matches and competitions, an NRA Certified Range Safety Officer will be officiating. He will be wearing a vest or hat which is highly visible so he can be easily identified. There are an entirely different set of commands and procedures used during matches which will be explained at the beginning of the match or competition. Los Lunas Gun Club membership includes several NRA Certified Range Safety Officers. 11. The first range to be constructed at the facility is the Pistol Range. This range, obviously, is for pistol shooting. There are 24 shooting stations. The range can be expanded as needed. There are shooting benches which are numbered from 1 through 24. You will shoot at the target that is numbered the same as your bench. The maximum distance for target placement is 50 yards. There will also be options for target placement at 7, 15, and 25 yards. Do not shoot at anything closer than 7 yards. NO high power rifles or muzzleloaders are to be used at this range. This range may be used for scheduled air rifle and rim fire (.22) matches, as well as pistol matches. 12. The second range to be constructed is the Rifle Range. Due to space limitations, the maximum distance for target placement is 200 yards. There will also be options for target placement at 50 and 100 yards. This range is for high power rifle and muzzleloader shooting. No handguns are to be used at this range. This range may also be used for scheduled high power rifle and muzzleloader matches. There are plans for an archery range and a shotgun range sometime in the future. 13. The hours of operation will be sunrise to sunset. No shooting is allowed before the sun comes up nor after the sun goes down. There are state laws pertaining to these regulations. Refer to a New Mexico Department of Game and Fish proclamation for sunrise and sunset times if you want to be more precise. 14. Members are allowed to bring guests to the range. Members must make sure that each guest has been instructed in the safe and responsible use of firearms as outlined in the NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure and the LLGC Range Orientation. Only 2 guests are allowed at one time on the firing line and must be closely supervised by the sponsoring member. Children must NOT be allowed to roam the facility. Members will take full responsibility for the actions of their guests. Frequent guests will be expected to join Los Lunas Gun Club. Page 3
15. Shooters will not shoot at anything other than paper targets. Exceptions may be made if target frames are removed from the range and others using the range at the time are informed and agree. During scheduled matches, other novelty targets may be used. Do not shoot at the tops of the berms! Irresponsible discharging of firearms is not allowed. 16. Shooters will police their cartridge casings and trash before leaving the range. If you do not reload (hand load) and have no use for your brass casings, please deposit them in the receptacles provided or give them to someone who does reload. There will be trash barrels at the range facility. There will be separate receptacles for misfires and duds. 17. The area in which the range facility is located is home to desert dwelling wildlife. Some of the residents are lizards, snakes (including rattlesnakes), kangaroo rats, field mice, badgers, foxes, coyotes, and the occasional deer. Do not shoot at the wildlife! There are also free ranging cattle in the area. Use care at all times to ensure that none of the wildlife or cattle are harmed as a result of shooting at our range. Be a good neighbor at all times. Respect the property of the surrounding landowners. The continued renewal of our use permit from Valencia County Planning and Zoning is dependent on our conduct. We don t want any complaints from neighbors about wanton destruction and trash blowing all over. Plastic bags are deadly to cattle. Try to leave the range property cleaner than you found it! 18. There is no water at the range facility. You must bring your own drinking water. There will be a portable toilet available. Bring your own hand cleaner. Other suggested items to bring are: Hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, rags or paper towels, first aid kit, extra water and/or soft drinks, snacks, jacket, cell phone, chairs, emergency items for your vehicle. 19. Hearing protection is required at the range, even if you re only a spectator. Safety glasses are strongly recommended for adults and are required for Junior and Red Rider members. These personal protection items are available at Wal-Mart, Big 5, and other local sporting goods outlets in Valencia County. It is recommended that you purchase the best that you can afford. 20. No fully automatic weapons are allowed at the range. No explosive devices of any kind are allowed. No tracer rounds or incendiaries of any kind are allowed. The largest caliber allowed will be the.50 BMG. No sales of firearms and/or ammunition, or Page 4
shooting paraphernalia is allowed on any Los Lunas Gun Club property. Items may be shown and demonstrated, but actual transactions for buying or selling must be conducted off the range property. 21. ATV s and dirt bikes are not allowed on the range property. Exceptions may be made for ATV s being used for maintenance, construction, or repair operations and during scheduled matches and competitions. Page 5
