Member Moments Early in September, Joan and Don Martin drove their 1977 Morgan 4/4 650KM from Barrie, Ontario to the Finger Lakes of norther New York State to participate in the Glenora Run in the tradition of the old, pre-1953 Watkins Glenn open road rally. Although there is a new Watkins Glen race track, once a year vintage autos are allowed to rally (race) through the center of town and over 6 or 7 KM of great rural roads, as in the original Grand Prix. Checking in the morning of the run, we received our instructions together with a bottle of local Reisling white wine (my kind of weekend). After a county run of 50 KM, we hit the old route - every driver for himself; Porches, the featured marque this year, went by as if I were stuck in low gear! And, although New York State Police were stationed to keep the course closed, there was local and on-coming traffic...even passed a few! The picture is Joan and Don over the famous Stone Bridge. It was a great time. 1100 sport cars - from old Ferraris to one Nash Metropolitan. Great food, good white wines, and wonderful people. The Morgan ran well at higher speeds. But damn! Morgans ride HARD!! 6 6
Drive Time In case you haven t checked outside, the rain has stopped, most of the roads have been swept and my Bugeye is back on the road (yeah, but not at any events yet). While most of you have been sleeping away those idle Saturday and Sunday mornings we cherish, I have been watching the sunrise from the seat of a Healey 3000, AC Ace or the Elise. You re missing out on the cool, dry weather to get the maximum of fun from your LBC. We have a slate of events upcoming. As always, (that means you do not have to ask) there will be a Saturday morning breakfast run. On October 14, we re heading on a southerly loop from midtown Tucson and feasting on Chef Omar s breakfast specials. Newton is on vacation, so we will ask for a volunteer for the Breakfast Burrito. Leaving at 7:30 AM will give us some early light and cool weather...should be grand. The next day we follow up with a picnic on Mr. Lemmon. This will give you the taste of Fall weather and possibly some Fall colors. We will begin again our luncheon tours when the Cruise and Schmooze begins on October 28. While it s close to Halloween, there are no costumes needed. Watch your emails as we get closer to that date. The November 2nd Saturday Breakfast Run will include a visit to a Tucson Garden Railway. Barry and Gina are organizing the visit for November 9th. We are not sure at this time whether it will be before or after the ride, so watch for upcoming information. Thanks again for attending the events and making it a pleasure to organize them. If you have any ideas for 2007, contact me and we ll set them up. If you have a favorite breakfast spot, let s work out and try some new places. See you for DRIVE TIME...
