Season Preview The 2003-04 season marks the beginning of new opportunities and horizons for the University of Northern Colorado men s basketball program. The team begins the transition to Division I, which brings different challenges and goals for the program. While there is the opportunity for greater national exposure and an increased fan base, the program will also have to deal with recruiting and competing against tougher opposition. The Bears completed their final Division II campaign in 2002-03 by finishing 11-15 overall with a very young squad. This year UNC returns 10 players from that team and also brings in four talented newcomers that will contribute to coach Craig Rasmuson s squad. The move to Division I is flat exciting, said Rasmuson who is entering his fifth year on the Bears bench. There is obviously a lot of work and growth and we ll do a lot by trial and error. Talent wise we are there in some spots and we need to get bigger at every spot and get our size to the Division I caliber. We are still a young team. We have some more experience than last season but a lot of that is just second year experience with the program. We can build from last year s experiences and add this year s experiences then I really like our chances in that first full Division I year and hopefully this will be another stepping stone for us. Two starters return from last year s team including senior point guard Sean Nolen, who garnered All-North Central Conference (NCC) honors last season by scoring 18.1 points per game and knocking down 2.88 three-pointers per contest. In total, Nolen hit 75 threepointers last season, which broke the previous single season school record of 69. Nolen was the only player in the NCC last season to finish in the top five of five different statistical categories (scoring, assists, free-throw percentage, three-point percentage and threepointers made per game). Nolen is poised to smash three school records this season, needing only 89 assists, 33 steals and 51 three-pointers to hold each of those schools records outright. His three-point shooting ability will be key in replacing graduated senior Kevin Knudson, who currently holds the school career three-point mark with 188. Sean had a very good junior year, Rasmuson said. This season we will have a little more depth so hopefully he will have more rest time and we will be able to keep him fresh for key stretches of the game. Also we will look for him to play the point guard role more and not have to worry about scoring so much. The other returning starter is sophomore guard Erik Olson. Olson averaged only 4.9 points and 3.7 rebounds per game last season as a true freshman but he does almost everything on the court well. As the season went along, Olson, who is also a pitcher on the UNC baseball team, gained confidence and playing time and ranked third on the team last season in minutes played per game (24.2). He also knocked down 15 trifectas, fourth most on the team. Erik gained a lot of confidence playing with Athletes in Action in Brazil for four weeks this summer, Rasmuson said. We expect him to be an impact player and he is shooting the ball well and his release is quicker which should translate into good things for our team. Other key returnees include sophomore big man Vincent Jackson, who is also a member of the UNC football team. In his first season of collegiate basketball last year, Jackson was impressive among the tall trees of the NCC. After joining the team in December and working himself into the starting lineup, Jackson played in 18 games, averaging 10.6 points and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting over 50% from the field. He ended the season with 10 straight double-figure scoring contests including 24 points and nine rebounds at nationally ranked South Dakota. His big body and power inside combined with his ability to take opponents to the perimeter make him a tough match-up for any UNC opponent. Vincent is a high-level Division I athlete, Rasmuson said. And now with a year under his belt we expect him to have a big season and create a lot of mismatches for our opponents. Joining Jackson down low is senior swingman James Randle, who started seven games for the Bears during his junior season. Randle gives the Bears height and athleticism that was evident in his crowd-pleasing dunks a season ago. Randle, who may sit out this season to play against a tougher schedule in 04-05, averaged 5.0 points and 4.3 rebounds a year ago and showed flashes of brilliance including a 12 point and 14 rebound performance a season ago at nationally ranked South Dakota. Wrapping up the returnees down low include senior Bryson Gholston (1.9 points, 2.1 rebounds) and junior center Ari Zandman Zeman. Zandman Zeman saw action in 24 games last year, including starting the last four of the season, where he averaged slightly under six points and seven rebounds per game. Joining these guys down low will be newcomers and big bodies Kirk Archibeque and Trei Steward. Archibeque, a Colorado all-state selection, scored almost 20 points a game his senior season and led his team to a state championship his junior year and a final four appearance his senior season. Steward was an All-Wyoming selection who led his team to a state title his sophomore season and third place finishes his final two seasons. The four should combine to give the Bears more of a physical presence in the paint. We should be much more physical and a lot stronger inside this season, Rasmuson added. And although it does not look like it on paper, we should also be taller which will make our ability to defend and rebound even more of a plus and strength for our team. The backcourt is rounded out by senior guard Parish Brockman, who started the first 13 games of last season before sitting out the remainder of the season due to a violation of team rules. Brockman averaged 7.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and shot 45% from the field. His slashing ability gives the Bears another penetrating guard to help create offensive opportunities for the team. Backup point guard Heath Orvis, one of the Bears top three-point threats from last season, joins Brockman in the backcourt. Orvis canned 20 three-pointers a year ago and had a 1.8:1 assist-to-turnover ratio, tops on the team. Sophomores Kendrick Irby and Chris Gebhardt, who both saw limited time due to injuries in 2002-03, fill our the returnees in the backcourt. Newcomers Michael Frazier and Matt Kline will both push for immediate playing time at the guard positions and hopefully contribute right away. Frazier, a transfer from Mt. San Jacinto J.C., knocked down 91 three-pointers and connected on 41.4% of his long range attempts in junior college last season. His outside presence should help the Bears replace the outside shooting of Knudson. Kline is a scorer who can quickly fill up a stat sheet. He led all Colorado classifications in scoring during the regular season last year (27.3 points/game) on his way to all-state and 4A Player of the Year honors. Perimeter play is definitely one of our main strengths, Rasmuson added. Frazier and Kline should help us right away from the outside and both are great pure shooters. Plus, Nolen, Olsen and Orvis can all shoot the outside shot well which should help open up the inside for our post players. The Bears will have their hands full with a schedule that contains a mix of Division I and Division II opponents including in-state Division I s Colorado, Colorado State (both of whom made the NCAA Tournament a season ago) and Denver. The Bears will also travel to Division I foes Iowa State, Eastern Michigan, Loyola Marymount, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas State-San Marcos and have a home-and-home series with Utah Valley State, who is also in the reclassification period along with UNC. In total the Bears will play 20 road contests although half of those will be played in the state of Colorado. UNC concludes their season at the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament that will feature host Florida Gulf Coast University, Longwood and Utah Valley State, independent teams who are also making the transition to Division I and who are unable to play in the postseason. I like the schedule, Rasmuson said. It s a nice mix to get our feet wet with this transition year. Our name and our location allowed us to go ahead and schedule a quarter of our games against Division I opponents that were willing to play us. It is going to be tough especially since most of our games will be on the road. But it we can hold our home court for eight games and if we are able to sneak out of one of those Division I arenas with a win it will be something that springboards us into 2004-05. I would be very disappointed if we do not win more games than we lose this year. Getting better every game and going through the experience are some of our goals this season, Rasmuson said. Since we won t have conference games we won t have to jockey around for position, we just want to treat every game like it is the last one and be better than the night before. 2003-04 University of Northern Colorado Bears Men s Basketball
