One year after capturing Ohio Valley Conference reshman of the Year honors, Taylor has elevated his game to another level during his sophomore campaign. Against Austin Peay last time out, the 6-7 250-pound Taylor capped off a remarkable game by draining a pair of gamewinning free throws with 0.1 seconds left in overtime. He ended the contest with his fourth double-double of the season, recording 19 points and a career-best 13 rebounds. He also added a career-high three assists and three steals in 40 minutes of playing time. Taylor currently ranks fifth in the OVC in rebounding and seventh in the league in scoring. SETTING THE STAGE: resh off its first Ohio Valley Conference victory of the season, The University of Tennessee at Martin men s basketball team will look to keep the momentum going when it travels to Tennessee State. A gritty effort down the stretch led to the Skyhawks coming out on top of a 76-74 overtime decision last Saturday against Austin Peay. In that game, UT Martin trailed by double-digits in the second half before forcing overtime, where Myles Taylor sank a pair of free throws with 0.1 seconds left on the clock. Taylor ended his evening with his eighth career double-double (19 points, career-best 13 rebounds) while Mike Liabo led the team in scoring off the bench with 21 points. Tennessee State enters the game on a four-game winning streak, with three of those wins coming against OVC squads. Last Saturday, the Tigers overcame a two-point halftime deficit to claim a 66-57 victory at Jacksonville State. Doubledoubles by Kellen Thornton (14 points, 14 rebounds) and MJ Rhett (10 points, 16 rebounds) paced Tennessee State, while Patrick Miller (19 points) and Jordan Cyphers (11) also reached double-figures in the scoring column. UTM PICKS UP IRST OVC VICTORY The Skyhawks 76-74 overtime win over Austin Peay on Jan. 5 was UT Martin s first Ohio Valley Conference regular-season victory since eb. 24, 2011 (78-70 over Eastern Kentucky). UT Martin clawed back from a doubledigit deficit in the second half to take its first lead of the game with 4:15 remaining in regulation. Myles Taylor capped off the comeback in overtime, as he drained the game-winning free throws with 0.1 seconds remaining on the clock. It was the Skyhawks first win this season when trailing at the half (previously 0-10) and when shooting under 40 percent (previously 0-7). SHULING THE STARTING LINEUP In part mostly to a total of five players missing time this injuries this season, the Skyhawks have trotted out 11 different starting lineups through 16 games in 2012-13. As a result, a dozen UT Martin players have logged at least one start. Sophomore Myles Taylor is the only Skyhawk to have started in all 16 contests. MYLES TAYLOR SNARES ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE Sophomore Myles Taylor recorded his fourth double-double of the season against Austin Peay on Jan. 5, pouring in 19 points to go along with a career-high 13 rebounds. He also has notched double-doubles this season against ontbonne on Nov. 14 (17 points, 11 rebounds), Arkansas State on Nov. 16 (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Jacksonville State (22 points, 12 rebounds) on Dec. 31. Taylor accounts for eight of the 19 double-doubles in the Jason James Era at UT Martin (2009-current). LIABO JOINS UTM S 1,000 POINT CLUB With a three-pointer at the 9:39 mark in the first half at Southeast Missouri on Dec. 29, junior swingman Mike Liabo became UT Martin s 16th member of the prestigious 1,000 Point Club. The 6-6 southpaw has been one of the most prolific scorers in the Ohio Valley Conference in his UT Martin career. Liabo has cracked double-figures in the scoring column in 60 of his 79 career games, eclipsing the 20-point mark on 11 different occasions. Liabo ranks fourth in Skyhawk history in three-point field goals made, as he has drained 158 trifectas in his illustrious career. QUICK HITS SMITH MAKES RETURN AT SEMO Redshirt sophomore Terence Smith logged 27 minutes off the bench at Southeast Missouri on Dec. 29, making his first appearance since breaking his ankle on Nov. 11 at Cincinnati. The 6-4 guard tallied six points, three rebounds and an assist. CLUTCH ROM THE CHARITY STRIPE UT Martin currently leads the OVC with a.737 free throw percentage. Six Skyhawks shoot at an.789 clip or higher, as Myles Taylor (71-for-90, 78.9 percent) ranks 11th in the OVC. Justin Childs (25-for-29, 86.2 percent) led the OVC for the majority of the year but now lacks the attempts to qualify amongst the top 10. MYLES DOMINATES EARLY AT SLU Sophomore Myles Taylor was on fire in the earlygoing at Saint Louis, pouring in 15 of UT Martin s first 18 points through the first 12:12 of the game. Taylor finished the contest with a game-high 20 points, the eighth 20-plus point game of his career. HEAD COACH RETURNS HOME The Dec. 15 game at Saint Louis featured a return home for UT Martin head coach Jason James. The fourth-year head coach attended Parkway West High School and was also an assistant coach at orest Park Community College in St. Louis before coming to UT Martin as an assistant coach in the 2002-03 season. HOT SHOOTING AT UCA In the second half at Central Arkansas on Dec. 5, the Skyhawks shot 65.5 percent from the floor (19-for-29). That marked the second-best shooting half under head coach Jason James, falling short to a 66.7 percent second half (14-for-21) against Jacksonville State on eb. 2, 2012. KHRISTIAN TAYLOR STEPPING UP Khristian Taylor dished out a careerbest 10 assists in 28 minutes off the bench against Kennesaw State. No assist was bigger than his pass to Justin Childs, who converted the game-winning layup with two seconds left. Taylor s 10 assists marked the first time a Skyhawk had handed out doubledigit assists in a game since Delrico Lane accomplished the feat against Eastern Kentucky on eb. 26, 2009. Earning his first start of the season a week later at Lipscomb, Taylor went off for career-highs with 14 points and six rebounds in 32 minutes. TRIO STANDS OUT AT MEMPHIS The trio of Mike Liabo (21 points), Justin Childs (17) and Myles Taylor (16) combined for 83 percent (54 of 65) of UT Martin s points in the Nov. 29 game at Memphis. UT MARTIN S STINGY DEENSE The Skyhawk defense has generated at least eight steals in seven games this year, including a season-high 17 against Lyon College on Nov. 20. In contrast, UT Martin only had seven games of eight or more steals in 31 games last season. SKYHAWKS SHARING THE ROCK UT Martin piled up 26 assists against Lyon College on Nov. 20, the highest total in head coach Jason James tenure. The last time the Skyhawks tallied that many assists was back on Nov. 14, 2008 in a 121-56 win over Maryville. TRIPLE OVERTIME... AGAIN UT Martin s 77-73 loss to Arkansas State on Nov. 16 was the third triple overtime game the Skyhawks had played in the last six years. The Skyhawks lost 109-105 at Tennessee Tech on Jan. 13, 2011 and won 101-94 over Samford on March 4, 2008 in the OVC Tournament quarterfinals. SUCCESSUL RETURN TO HOMETOWN OR A PAIR O SKYHAWKS The 2012-13 season opener against Arkansas-Little Rock served as a homecoming of sorts for senior Jeremy Washington and sophomore Myles Taylor, who both call Little Rock their hometowns. In front of approximately 50 friends and family members, the Skyhawk duo put on a show - combining for exactly half of UT Martin s total points (34 of 68). Taylor scored a game-high 24 points in 26 minutes while Washington compiled 10 points in 16 minutes off the bench. UTM HITS TRIPLE-DIGITS IN EXHIBITION VICTORY The Skyhawk offense was clicking on all cylinders in the exhibition win over Illinois College on Nov. 2, tallying 109 points. The last time UT Martin posted 100 or more points in the Elam Center was a 121-56 win over Maryville on Nov. 14, 2008. UT Martin connected on exactly half of its field goal attempts (42-for-84), including a remarkable 66.7 percent effort from beyond the three-point arc (16-for- 24). The Skyhawks also handed out 27 assists against only eight turnovers.

Jason James Head Coach ourth Season at UT Martin ourth Season Overall Graceland, 2000 Jason James has been at the helm of The University of Tennessee at Martin men s basketball program since 2009-10. After spending seven seasons as an assistant coach at The University of Tennessee at Martin, including the role of associate head coach during the 2008-09 Ohio Valley Conference championship season, James was named the program s eighth head coach on June 5, 2009. James, a native of St. Louis, Mo., is one of the nation s youngest NCAA Division-I men s basketball head coaches, but his experience in the UT Martin program has prepared James for the challenge. This has always been my goal, ever since I was 10, the 35-year-old James said. My dad introduced me to basketball and he always coached me and my brothers. He had such a joy in coaching that he made me want to coach and influence young men just like he did. In 2011-12, UT Martin faced a tough schedule that included 10 games against eight eventual teams who made the postseason, including NCAA Tournament teams Louisville (inal our), Ohio (Sweet 16), Murray State (round of 32) and Lamar (round of 68). The Skyhawks posted a 4-27 overall record but eight losses were by single-digits, including a 65-58 loss to No. 9 Murray State on eb. 4. During the 2011-12 campaign, James coached OVC reshman of the Year Myles Taylor. Taylor also earned OVC All-Newcomer accolades after taking home the league s reshman of the Week award five times during the season. The Skyhawks soared to several new heights as a program in 2010-11, tripling their win output from the previous season and winning their first OVC tournament game in Nashville in program history. UT Martin s success was atrributed to a steady blend of veterans and one of the most accomplished recruiting classes in program history. Senior Benzor Simmons led the team in scoring and became the program s 15th member of the 1,000 Point Club on Jan. 24, 2011 at SIU Edwardsville. The recruiting class all blossomed as well, as three Skyhawk freshmen combined to take home eight adidas OVC reshman of the Week awards. That marked only the third time that one university has earned that many mentions in a single season since the league started giving out the award in the 1978-79 season. After five losses by single-digits in five of their first 16 games in 2010-11 including a narrow six-point loss at Tennessee on Dec. 29 the Skyhawks began clicking around midseason of the OVC schedule, reeling off a four-game win streak from Jan. 15 through Jan. 24. A month later, the Skyhawks clinched a spot in the OVC tournament with a dominating 73-54 victory on the road against Eastern Illinois. In its OVC tournament opener, UT Martin earned a hard-fought 68-64 victory over Tennessee State before falling to Tennessee Tech the eventual league runner-up Despite a 4-25 record, James posted several positives during his debut season as bench leader at UT Martin in 2009-10 against arguably one of the toughest schedules in the history of the program. In his ratings for the first week of December, noted college basketball journalist Ken Pomeroy ranked the Skyhawks as having the fourth-toughest non-conference strength of schedule in NCAA Division-I. The Skyhawks wound up playing up nine games against six teams that made the postseason in 2009-10. Despite the quality of opponents, seven of the team s losses were by 10 points or less as the Skyhawks battled injuries and was forced to play

players out of position. A bit of history occured in late December of 2009, as the Skyhawks earned back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week accolades for just the second time in school history. Off the court, James players and staff go the extra mile to benefit the local community. The basketball team regularly organizes a team for the West Weakley County Relay for Life every June, raising thousands of dollars. The Skyhawks also fought the ongoing battle with cancer through the Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers event at home against Murray State in 2010 in a nationally-televised game on ESPN-U. In that collaboration, fans made donations for each three-pointer the team made in the month of January. Under James, the Skyhawks have also been involved in the Character Counts program in the Weakley County schools, the D.A.R.E program, and the Boys and Girls clubs in Union City. Over his tenure at UT Martin as an assistant coach, James was directly responsible in the recent resurgance of the Skyhawk program over the last several seasons. Since his first season on the Skyhawk bench in 2002, James has coached seven of UT Martin s 15 all-time 1,000 point scorers. He also recruited two of UT Martin s all-time great Division-I players in Jared Newson and Lester Hudson. Newson ranks fourth in all-time program history in points scored after playing just three seasons with the Skyhawks. Newson ranks in the top-10 in seven different all-time career UT Martin categories, including points (1,347, fourth), field goals made (452, fifth), field goals attempted (1,016, fifth), free throws made (378, second), free throws attempted (526, first), rebounds (535, seventh), blocks (43, 10th) and steals (128, seventh). After he exhausted his eligibility at UT Martin, Newson attended training camp with the Dallas Mavericks before becoming an overseas fan favorite for his acrobatic slam-dunks in Germany. In Hudson, James found a diamond in the rough that became one of the best all-around players in the NCAA and eventually would be chosen by the Boston Celtics in the 2009 NBA Draft. In Hudson s collegiate debut, he torched eventual national runnerup Memphis for 35 points, but the legend of Hudson was just getting started. Just eight days later, Hudson grabbed national headlines when he became the first-ever NCAA Division-I men s basketball player to record a quadruple-double (25 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, 10 steals) vs. Central Baptist on Nov. 13, 2007. Later that season, Hudson became the first-ever UT Martin player to be named an All-American since the program joined the Division-I ranks in 1992. That season, James helped guide the Skyhawks to a school-record for OVC wins in one season (11), as UT Martin won the OVC regular season championship for the first time ever. The Skyhawks also hosted and won a first-round OVC Tournament game for the first time in UT Martin history, before falling to eventual-tournament champion Austin Peay by a single point (78-77). In that 2008-2009 season the Skyhawks broke or tied 12 team and individual game/season records, including most wins in a single season (22), and longest winning streak (11 games from Jan. 10 through eb. 18). After winning its first-ever OVC regularseason championship, the Skyhawks earned a trip to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), the first postseason appearance for a UT Martin team in its brief Division-I history. In that game, the Skyhawks hung tough with SEC member Auburn on Auburn s home floor before falling 87-82. James coaching philosophy is simple: play the game the right way and the rest will fall into place. I tell the guys all the time performance counts, James said. Everybody is judged on their performance, rather that s fair or not. If we can show up and perform night in and night out, the wins and losses will take care of themselves. Our program is going to compete, fight, scratch and claw for 40 minutes. Off the court, James is an intense scholar of the game. He spends countless hours watching tape, studying other coaches and reading books about all phases of the game of basketball. James came to UT Martin from orest Park Community College in St. Louis, Mo., where he was an assistant men s basketball coach for two years. The team finished second in the region James first year, and many PCC players during James tenure went on to play Division I and Division II basketball. Before his stint at orest Park, James taught physical education and health for one year at Ritenour Middle School in St. Louis, while also coaching a high school all-star team from the state of Michigan that placed third out of 54 teams at the USA Junior Nationals. James earned his bachelor s degree in physical education and health with a coaching endorsement from Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa in 2000. or two seasons he served as captain of the Graceland University basketball team. He was voted Graceland reshman Basketball Player of the Year for the 1996-97 season and was named the team s MVP during the 1999-2000 season. In the fall of 2010, James was enshrined in the fourth class of the Parkway Alumni Association Hall of ame, as he was recognized for his contributions since graduating from Parkway West High School in St. Louis in 1996. James married the former Dani Walker of Oxford, Miss. in May 2010 and the couple has two daughters, Sadie and Claire.
