Friday s game will be the first time both Millikin and EIU s women s basketball teams will meet on the cort. The Panthers look to start the season on a high note mch like last season s 77-71 overtime victory over IUPUI in EIU s season opener. EIU will attempt to avenge last season s 3-25 finish and head back to the OVC tornament after finishing the season with a 2-14 OVC record and missing ot on the tornament for the first time since the 2006-07 season. NEW YEAR NEW DYNAMIC This will once again be a very yong Panther women s basketball team with only three pperclassmen on the roster. Erica Brown, who was one of the team s top performers last season, is the sqad s lone senior this year. For Panthers from last year s freshmen class retrn to the team this year inclding breakot Halle Stll who started in 20 games her freshman season. Carmen Tellez, Brittin Boyer, Karina Chandra, and Stll will be looked to even more this season to help gide the yong sqad. Head coach Debbie Black added for freshmen to the team to fill in some of the gaps after losing five players from last year. LOST BUT NOT GONE Despite losing some key players from last year s sqad the Panthers manage to retrn the majority of their key prodcers on the cort. Erica Brown led the team last year in points, rebonds, and blocks hoping to have an even greater impact in her final season at EIU. Also retrning to the sqad is Grace Lennox who ran point for the Panther offense and far-andaway led the team in mintes played and assists last year. Black was hired May 16, 2013 to take over the program following a long career as an assistant coach, most recently at Ohio State. While with the Bckeyes program Black helped coach the team to seven straight NCAA Tornament appearances inclding six Big Ten Conference Championships. Black has been part of 34 winning basketball seasons both as a player and a coach. She began her playing career at Saint Joseph s University helping the Hawks make for straight NCAA Tornament appearances. After gradation in 1988, she played professionally overseas in Tasmania (1989-96). She played in the WNBA from 1999-2005 earning WNBA Defensive Player of the Year honors. Nicknamed The Pest Black is the only women s professional player to record a qadrple doble with 10 points, 14 rebonds, 12 assists and 10 steals in a game. Black s career record is 25-61, 16-32 in OVC games. LAST TIME OUT The Panthers closed ot their 2015-16 season falling to SIU Edwardsville to earn a 3-25 overall record while going 2-14 in OVC play. EIU strggled to get back in the win colmn after winning their season opener over IUPUI in overtime 77-71. The team appeared to get back on track late in the season eventally snapping their losing streak by winning their first two games in Feb. over Sotheast Missori and Astin Peay. The Panthers nearly swept their last major home stand of the season following the wins over both the Redhawks and the Governors forcing Mrray State into overtime, bt eventally dropped the game 74-71. Crrently Brown is fifth on the all-time career blocks list at EIU with 116 blocks to her name throghot her three years as a Panther. Last season Brown tallied 43 blocks to lead the team and rank forth in the OVC for total blocks and blocks per game. Blocks won t be the only thing to keep an eye on in regards to Erica Brown this season as the senior looks to join an exclsive clb at EIU. The Hoyleton, Ill. native will vie to become the 15th member of the 600 rebond clb in her last year at EIU. So far in her three seasons Brown has accmlated 487 total rebonds. While it may seem like she has a long way to go to reach 600, last year she recorded 195 rebonds to lead the team. Jnior Grace Lennox has the opportnity to break into the record books as well this season. The Panthers assist leader for past two seasons, she has recorded 238 assists in her two-year career. If the Tasmania native can contine her assist prowess this season she cold break into the top-10 career assist list at EIU. Tracy Roller (1989-92) crrently maintains the No. 10 position with 364 career assists. Lennox can srpass Roller if she has a similar season as last year where she recorded 130 assists. Jalisha Smith looks to keep the momentm going from the end of last season. Smith earned her first career starts in the last eight games of the season averaging 7.4 points and 5.5 rebonds over that span. In that time she also set new career highs recording 11 rebonds against Mrray State and 14 points against SIU Edwardsville. EIU s freshman class this season featres all ot of state players that have the potential to make an immediate impact for the Panthers. This year s team will featre freshman from Ohio (Zharia Lenoir), Missori (Danielle Berry), Indiana (Allison Van Dyke, and Wisconsin (Jennifer Nehls). Halle Stll leads this year s sophomore class after her breakot season last year in which she started 20 games as a tre freshman. Stll was second only to Erica Brown for rebonds and blocked shots on the year even ranking ninth in the OVC for blocked shots per game. The Rockford, Ill. native averaged 7.8 points per game her freshman season.
