Regular Club meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM at the McDonalds Restaurant, 769 W Airport Fwy, Hurst TX. Take the Precinct Line exit, and the McDonalds is on the east bound access road. Next Meeting: Tuesday August 10,2010 7:30PM McDonalds 769 W Airport Fwy Hurst Forth Of July Fun Fly (Held on the 3 rd ) I want to thank everyone who took part in the 4th Fun Fly. The roster was signed by 35 people, but more attended. Even though it had rained the night before, the event was held on a slightly soggy runway with a few puddles. Never have so many pilots landed in the water without floats. Dutch Rovell, who was flying his grandfather s 120 stick, made the first full puddle landing at the end of a perfect dead stick landing. One of the best water landings was made by Lawrence who produced the biggest spray of the day. See the accompanying pictures and go to the club site to see all of the pictures. A special thanks to Walt for the great pictures. Again, he did a super job of documenting a great fun time at GSW. He took some amazing pictures of the action, especially the water landings. Also, a special thanks to Jim Keller, Lee Rice, Dona Rice, Tommy Ezell and all of the "Great Food Crew." Everything was real tasty...and I know, because I tried at least one of everything. I believe that Lawrence and Max started a great tradition at the Scale Contest. We followed their lead by honoring our Flag and Country at the flag pole while playing the National Anthem and saluting our flag. Before honoring the flag, the law authorizing veterans to hand salute (Continued on page 3) Boy Scouts Fly At GSWAM On 17 July, Boy Scout Troop 144 was hosted by GSWAM at the field. The roster was signed by 55 people, 21 from GSWAM and 34 Scouts, Leaders and parents. Thanks to Frank Rowell and Walt Fisher for coordinating the event and helping with the training. Also, thanks to all of the pilots who helped with the event. The flying orientation started with a Ground School which covered safety items, basics of flight, aircraft systems and flying techniques. This was followed by scale flying demonstrations by Lawrence with his B- 25 and Tim with his P-47. Both put on a great show during the day. Other pilots also flew demonstration flights throughout the day. Buddy Box training on two club trainers and two private aircraft (one electric and one gas) was held before and after lunch. All of the Boy Scouts and their Leaders got to fly at least once and many few several times. Some of the parents and other children also got some Buddy Box time. Before lunch, we honored our Flag and Country at the flag pole by playing the National Anthem and saluting our flag. Once again, before honoring the flag, the law authorizing veterans to hand salute during the playing of the National Anthem was briefed. All veterans presented a hand salute. (Continued on page 3)

July Secretary s Report The July 2010 business meeting was called to order by club president Tim Lovett at the McDonalds Restaurant at 769 W. Airport Freeway Hurst, TX 76053. The June business meeting minutes were approved as written by attending club members. Visitors/Guests: Rick McCommas and Allan Thompson Old Business: Field Report: There will be a work day on 7/24/2010 during which additional topsoil will be delivered to the flying facility, and volunteers will be needed to spread the soil over runway low spots. The shelter s roof panels are retaining rain water in spots and will need to be repaired as well. Sprinkler Schedule: The flying field sprinkler system is currently scheduled to water the runway and pit areas three times a week. Trash Can Usage: The 55 gallon trash containers are not to be used for crashed aircraft storage. If you should lose a plane and want to dispose of the carcass please dump aircraft remains into the dumpster and not the trash cans. Boy Scout Event: The Boy Scout event, to be held Saturday 7/17/2010, is expecting to draw around 20 scouts and eight adults, so volunteer instructors and helpers will be needed to facilitate the event. Model of the Month: Roy Baker won the July Model of the Month award with his Ugly Stick. The aircraft is powered by an O.S. 160 twin cylinder engine. Club Web Site: Be sure the visit the Greater Southwest Aero Modeler s web site at: http://www.flygsw.org. There is a current membership roster in the Members area and be sure to check out the club s Tech site, there s an abundance of useful information available. Sonny Coleman Club Secretary 214-415-1921 Sonny@flygsw.org (Continued from page 1) during the playing of the National Anthem was briefed. Nineteen veterans were present and performed the salute. Thanks again to all who attended and took part. With the club s permission, I will plan to do this again next year. The 4 th falls on a Monday next year, so maybe we can have the event then. Chuck (Continued from page 1) As expected, the Scouts didn t leave much of the great food prepared by the galley crew of Jim Keller, Lee Rice, Tommy Ezell and others. As usual, all of the burgers and hot dogs were outstanding and the Scouts helped in finishing off the last remaining hot dogs. Walt had a throttle malfunction during his first flight, so he got to take pictures of the event. He did make a great dead stick after waiting forever for his plane to run out of gas. Thanks to Walt for the great pictures. Go to the club site to see all of the pictures. Thanks again to all of the great GSWAM members who attended and helped the Scouts have a great day. As a follow-up to the Scout event, we just learned from the Scout Master that seven (7) of the Boy Scouts who attended the GSWAM training session have now completed all the requirements for their Aviation Merit Badges. The new badges will be presented to the Scouts in August at their Court of Honor. GSW Events for 2010 All Scale Flyin October 9th. Max Ficken coordinator Food drive November13th.
