About Us Barnabas Soccer Schools exist to provide high quality training for all children, aged 5-18. Our unique and personalised methods ensure that every player makes progress regardless of ability. There is no selection for the soccer schools, all players of all abilities are welcome and we believe all players will gain confidence, develop new skills and develop their football ability. Barnabas FC has been launched to allow our players who wish to, the opportunity of playing in a team within the local league. For the 2016-2017 season we have a mixed u11 team in the Pioneer League. Why Barnabas? The word Barnabas means 'encourager' and at our football academy and in our football team, we seek to encourage all our children to achieve their best, not just in football but in all areas of their lives. Our Training We use the games and coaching techniques of Futebol de Salao and Futsal, developed in South America and credited with the successful development of many South American & European stars such as Messi, Ronaldinho and many more. We also use many drills and techniques developed from studying football skills training throughout the world and our own extensive coaching experience. During my childhood in Portugal, all we played was futsal. The smaller court helped my footwork skills, the nature of the game made me feel so free when I played. If it wasn t for Futsal, I would definitely not be the player I am today. Cristiano Ronaldo At our training sessions children spend the majority of the time with a ball each or in pairs, working to develop key skills and techniques. A typical training session consists of: core ball skills; passing; shooting; focus on a theme i.e. moves to beat players and Futebol de Salao or Futsal games What is Futebol de Salão Futebol de Salão is a 5-a-side version of football of South American origin that is played with a smaller (size 2), heavier (465g) ball that has virtually no bounce (10%). The game became very popular in Brazil where players such as Pele, Rivelino, Zico right through to Juninho, Ronaldo and Rivaldo were brought up first playing Futebol de Salão before moving on to conventional football. 2
Training Our training sessions take place in the sports hall at Torquay Academy Typical training session for Beginners 9-10 am: Beginners 10 am - 12 noon: Intermediates and Advanced Typical training session for Intermediates and Advanced I have many years to get better and better, and that has to be my ambition. The day you think there is no improvements to be made is a sad one for any player. Lionel Messi 3
Practicing at Home We encourage our players to practice their skills as often as possible, just 5-15 minutes a day of skills practise will make you a better player. In our sessions we teach players many skills which will help them to improve as a player, however to fully master these skills and become the best player you can be takes hours of practice and dedication. To help players practise their skills at home we have a section on our website (www.barnabassports.co.uk ) that will give them a variety of skills they can practise. Individual Training Plans In addition Matt is always happy to create individual training plans for any of our players, just ask him at training or email mattday@barnabassports.co.uk Skills Badge We have a skills badge which we hope will encourage players to work hard in training and at home to develop their skills. Every player will be given their own skills badge booklet so that they can train at home and be assessed by an adult at home or one of our coaches at training. We will use the skills badge in training sessions and give players plenty of opportunities to be assessed. Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do. Pele When players achieve a level they will receive a skills badge which can be placed on their team jersey and a small medal/trophy. 4
Training Kit We believe in being professional in everything we do and thus believe it is important for all our players to look smart and feel part of our team. Therefore we ask that once settled in, all children wear our kit to every training session. We ask for a joining fee of 10, in exchange we will provide your child with a full training kit. We also have additional items of kit, players may wish to purchase. Please follow the link (Kit) on our website www.barnabassports.co.uk to view or purchase any additional kit through Boca Soccer. Match Kit Barnabas FC players will be provided with a match kit. The vision of a champion is someone who is bent over, drenched in sweat, at the point of exhaustion, when no one else is watching.
