BOSTON RED SOX (1-1) at TORONTO BLUE JAYS (2-2) Friday, April 8, 2016 7:07 p.m. ET Rogers Centre Toronto, ON RHP Joe Kelly (0-0, ---) vs. RHP Marcus Stroman (1-0, 3.38) Game #3 Road Game #3 TV: NESN/MLBN Radio: WEEI 93.7 FM, WCEC 1490 AM (Spanish) POSTPONED AGAIN: Last night s Red Sox/Indians game in Cleveland was postponed due to rain and will be made up on a TBD date...it marked the teams 2nd postponement in 4 days spanning their opening series at Progressive Field...Monday s scheduled opener was also postponed and made up on Tuesday. THE FIRST TWO: Boston enters its 3rd game of the season with a 1-1 record...2013 remains the only time since 1999 that the Sox have opened a season with 2 straight wins. The Red Sox scored 6 runs in each of their first 2 games of the season for just the 2nd time in the last 20 years (1997-2016)...They also did it in 2013. The Sox outscored the Indians in their 2 games, 12-9, batting.288/.361/.534 with 3 2B and 5 HR. SEEING BLUE: Today the Red Sox and Blue Jays open their 19-game season series...boston won their last 2 meetings and 7 of their last 10 to take the 2015 set, 10-games-to-9. Between this 3-game road series and a 4-game home set (4/15-18), Boston plays 7 of its first 13 regular season games against Toronto...Including their 2 exhibition games at Montreal s Olympic Stadium last weekend, the Sox and Jays face off 9 times over the first 18 days of April. JAY HAWK: David Ortiz holds the all-time record for doubles (63), homers (59), and RBI (179) against the Blue Jays. Ortiz s 124 career extra-base hits against the Jays are the most all-time, as well as the most for any active player against any single team (Ortiz s 120 extra-base hits against the Yankees rank 2nd on that list). ROGER THAT: The Red Sox 117 wins at Rogers Centre (which opened in 1989) are the most by any visiting team, and the Sox.549 all-time winning percentage here is the highest among all AL teams, including the Blue Jays (.546). David Ortiz has more doubles (32), home runs (39), extra-base hits (71), and RBI (102) at Rogers Centre than any other visitor in the ballpark s history. BETTS BASHES BIRDS: Mookie Betts has hit.365 (35-for- 96) in his career against the Blue Jays, tops among active players vs. TOR (min. 100 PA)...Only Chris Davis (.671) has a higher SLG than Betts.625 mark facing the Jays. Betts hit.384 (28-for-73) against Toronto in 2015...His 28 hits were 3 more than any other Toronto opponent last year and mark the 3rd highest single-season total by a Red Sox against the Jays, behind Jacoby Ellsbury (34 in 2011) and Dustin Pedroia (31 in 2013). FACING EAST: Today the Sox start a stretch of 13 straight games against division rivals...dustin Pedroia has reached base in each of his last 39 games against AL East opponents beginning 4/24/15 (.313/.390/.469, 8 2B, 3B, 5 HR, 20 RBI, 20 BB, HBP) while Mookie Betts has reached base in his last 33 games against the AL East since 6/28/15 (.369/.408/.645, 52-for-141, 11 2B, 2 3B, 8 HR, 19 RBI, 9 BB, HBP). According to Elias, these streaks by Pedroia and Betts are the longest active streaks by any active player against any single division. Elias also notes that Pedroia s 39-game on-base streak is the 2nd-longest ever against AL East clubs by a Red Sox player, trailing only Wade Boggs, who reached in 61 consecutive AL East games from 9/15/84-8/27/85 (divisional play began in 1969). JOE GOES FOR 9: Tonight Joe Kelly makes his season debut after going 8-0 over his final 9 starts of 2015...His 8-game win streak is tied with TEX s Cole Hamels for the longest active streak in the AL. A win tonight would make him the first Sox pitcher with as many as 9 victories in a 10-start stretch since Pedro Martinez won 9 of 10 starts from 6/20-8/10/02. OPENING WIN: Boston began its 116th AL season with a 6-2 win in Cleveland on Tuesday, the make-up of Monday s postponement...the Sox are 57-58-1 all-time on Opening Day (excluding G2 of twinbills in 1903, 1948, 1982), having won 6 of their last 9 season openers...it was the club s 76th opener on the road (34-41-1) and 6th straight road opener. DAVID STARTS STRONG: David Ortiz has homered in both of Boston s first 2 games of the season, moving into sole possession of 26th place on MLB s all-time homer list with 505 in his career...gary Sheffield is next at 509. Since 1990, Ortiz is the only Red Sox player to homer in each of a season s first 2 games, doing so in both 2011 and 2016...Only two Red Sox players have gone deep in the club s first 3 games of a season: Mike Greenwell in 1989 and Bobby Doerr in 1941. Elias says Ortiz is just the 2nd player in MLB history age 40 or older to homer in each of his team s first 2 games of a season...the other was fellow Sox lefthanded slugger Ted Williams in 1960 at 41 years old. PRICE POINTS: On Tuesday, David Price became just the 5th pitcher to earn the win in his Red Sox debut as Boston s Opening Day starter, joining Pedro Martinez in 1998, Gary Peters in 1970, Dick Ellsworth in 1968, and Jim Bagby in 1938...Price fanned 10, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, all singles. The 10 SO marked the most ever by a left-handed pitcher in a Red Sox debut...it also marked the most SO ever by a Red Sox lefty in a season opener. He was the first Red Sox to reach double-digit SO in his Red Sox debut since Daisuke Matsuzaka in 2007, and was the first Boston pitcher to the 10-SO mark on Opening Day since Josh Beckett in 2009. Since 1971, the only other AL pitcher with both 10 SO and 0 XBH allowed in an Opening Day game was Pedro Martinez in both 1998 and 2000 with Boston. START YOUNG: Tuesday s Opening Day lineup featured 5 players age 25 or younger: Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Travis Shaw, and Blake Swihart... It marked Boston s most Opening Day starters that young since the 1969 team also had 5: Mike Andrews, Tony Conigliaro, Rico Petrocelli, George Scott, and Reggie Smith. With homers on Opening Day both in 2015 and 2016, Betts joins only 4 other players to have homered in multiple Opening Day games at age 23 or younger over the last 20 years...the others are Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, Jason Heyward, and Andruw Jones. PAPI S FINALE: David Ortiz announced on 11/18/15, his 40th birthday, that the 2016 season will be his last as a major league player...this will be his 20th big league season (debuted in 1997 with MIN), his 14th season with Boston... He has been a member of the Red Sox since 2003, longer than any other active player has been with his current team. Ortiz, the only player with 30 HR and 100 RBI each of the last 3 years, has his sights on these records for players in an age-40 season or older: 34 HR (Darrell Evans in 1934), 108 RBI (Dave Winfield, 1992),.645 SLG and 1.096 OPS (both Ted Williams, 1961 - min. 350 PA)...The most HR by a player in his final MLB season was 35 by Dave Kingman in 1986. REHAB NEWS: Christian Vazquez, who began the season on the 15-day DL (retro to 3/25) recovering from Tommy John surgery, is on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket...Last night s PawSox season opener at McCoy Stadium was postponed by rain and wet grounds. BACK AT THE HELM: John Farrell returns for his 4th season as Red Sox Manager in 2016...He missed from August 14 through the end of the 2015 regular season on medical leave after being diagnosed with stage 1 non-hodgkin s Burkitt lymphoma...in his absence, Bench Coach Torey Lovullo served as interim manager.
