BOSTON RED SOX (3-1) at TORONTO BLUE JAYS (2-4) Sunday, April 10, 2016 1:07 p.m. ET Rogers Centre Toronto, ON RHP Steven Wright (0-0, ) vs. RHP Marco Estrada (0-0, ) Game #5 Road Game #5 TV: NESN/MLBN Radio: WEEI 93.7 FM, WCEC 1490 AM (Spanish) YESTERDAY S GAME: The Red Sox earned their 2nd come-from-behind win in as many days, overcoming deficits of 2-0 and 4-3 by scoring the game s final 5 runs...starter Rick Porcello struck out 7 in 6.0 IP before Koji Uehara (1.0 IP, SO) and Robbie Ross Jr. (2.0 IP, 2 SO) combined for 3.0 perfect innings of relief. Every player in the BOS lineup reached base via hit or BB, with 7 Red Sox scoring at least 1 run and 5 players recording a double...hanley Ramirez broke a 4-4 tie with a 2-run triple in the 5th inning before scoring on a passed ball...rusney Castillo went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored in his 2016 debut, joining Dustin Pedroia (3-for-5, 2B, R) as the only Sox with multiple hits. BATTING UP: Boston enters its 5th contest of the season averaging 7.0 runs and 10.8 hits per game...the Sox 28 total runs are their most through 4 games since 2003 (34). This marks just the 3rd time the Red Sox have ever recorded at least 6 runs and 10 hits in each of its first 4 games of a season (also 1985 and 1950)...No other MLB team has accomplished the feat since the 2003 Pirates also turned the trick. WHAT A RELIEF: Red Sox relief pitchers have held opponents to a.100 AVG (5-for-50), the lowest mark among ML bullpens...among AL clubs, Red Sox relievers also rank 1st in opponent OPS (.353) and WHIP (0.69). SEEING BLUE: Today the Red Sox and Jays continue their 19-game season series...the Sox, who took the 2015 set 10-9, have won their last 4 meetings, and 9 of the past 12. Between this 3-game road series and a 4-game home set (4/15-18), Boston plays 7 of its first 13 regular season games against Toronto...Including their 2 exhibition games at Montreal s Olympic Stadium last weekend, the Sox and Jays face off 9 times over the first 18 days of April. JAY HAWK: David Ortiz holds the all-time record for doubles (64), homers (59), and RBI (181) against the Blue Jays. Ortiz s 125 career extra-base hits against the Jays are the most all-time, as well as the most for any active player against any single team (Ortiz s 120 extra-base hits against the Yankees rank 2nd on that list). BROCK STARRING: With an RBI double and his 1st career grand slam Friday, Brock Holt set a career high with 5 RBI, 2 more than any of his previous 287 career ML games. Holt is 7-for-17 (.412) in the first 4 games, with 2 2B and 2 HR...He has driven in 8 of BOS 28 runs (29%). Holt homered in back-to-back games (Wed. & Fri.) for the first time in his career...his 2 homers this season already match his total from all of 2015. Holt went 2-for-3 with a 2B and a grand slam with runners in scoring position Friday night...since the 2015 All-Star break, his.439 AVG with RISP leads MLB (min. 50 AB), while his.500 OBP ranks T-2nd. Holt leads all active major leaguers with a.341 career AVG in day games (min. 100 AB). CALL IT A COMEBACK: Boston came back from a 5-run deficit to win Friday night s game, 8-7...They trailed 7-2 after 4 innings but stormed back to take the lead in the 7th. Boston s largest deficit overcome to win in all of 2015 was 4 runs on 6/7 vs. OAK (trailed 4-0, won 7-4)...They last overcame a 5-run deficit and won on 5/26/14 at ATL (trailed 6-1, won 8-6), which ended a 10-game losing streak and started a 7-game winning streak. According to Elias, it was the Red Sox 170th victory in a game they had trailed by 5+ runs, most by any AL franchise, but the team s 1st such victory in Toronto. ROGER THAT: The Red Sox 119 wins at Rogers Centre (which opened in 1989) are the most by any visiting team, and the Sox.553 all-time winning percentage here is the highest among all AL teams, including the Blue Jays (.546). David Ortiz has more doubles (33), home runs (39), extra-base hits (72), and RBI (104) at Rogers Centre than any other visitor in the ballpark s history. HANLEY BEING HANLEY: Hanley Ramirez has either scored or driven in the winning run in each of the Red Sox 3 victories this season...scored the go-ahead run Tuesday at CLE, giving BOS a 3-2 lead in the 6th (W6-2)...Friday at TOR, broke a 7-7 tie with an RBI single in the 7th (W8-7)...Yesterday, broke a 4-4 tie with a 2-RBI triple in the 5th (W8-4). FACING EAST: Today the Red Sox continue a stretch of 13 straight games against divisional rivals, which began Friday night...dustin Pedroia has reached base in each of his last 41 games against AL East opponents beginning 4/24/15 (.318/.391/.471, 9 2B, 3B, 5 HR, 22 RBI, 20 BB, HBP)...According to Elias, this is the longest current on-base streak by any active player against any single division. LONGEST CURRENT DIVISIONAL ON-BASE STREAKS (ACTIVES) PLAYER DIVISION GAMES START DATE Dustin Pedroia AL East 41 4/24/2015 Edwin Encarnacion AL West 29 9/25/2014 Miguel Cabrera NL East 28 9/30/2007 Source: Elias Sports Bureau Elias also notes that Pedroia s 41-game on-base streak is the 2nd-longest ever against AL East clubs by a Red Sox player, trailing only Wade Boggs, who reached in 61 consecutive AL East games from 9/15/84-8/27/85 (divisional play began in 1969). ON POINT VS. JAYS: Dustin Pedroia has reached base safely in 23 straight games against the Blue Jays beginning on 7/29/14 (.337, 33-for-98, 7 BB)...It marks the longest active on-base streak for any player vs. TOR and the longest such streak by a Red Sox since Nomar Garciaparra reached safely in 24 straight against the Jays from 1999-2002. PAPI STARTS STRONG: David Ortiz had 2 2B and 2 HR in the first 3 games of 2016 (DNP yesterday)...ortiz became the first Red Sox player with an XBH and an RBI in each of the team s first 3 gams since Mike Greenwell in 1993...Until Ortiz this year, no Red Sox had recorded as many as 4 XBH over the team s first 3 games of a season since Jose Offerman in 1999 (5 XBH). Ortiz homered in Boston s first 2 games this season... Since 1990, he is the only Red Sox player to accomplish the feat, doing so in both 2011 and 2016...Elias says he was just the 2nd major leaguer age 40 or older to homer in each of his team s first 2 games of a season, joining Boston s Ted Williams in 1960 at 41 years old. REHAB NEWS: Christian Vazquez, who began the season on the 15-day DL (retro to 3/25) recovering from Tommy John surgery, is on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket...He caught all 9 innings against Buffalo Friday night in Pawtucket s opener, going 1-for-2, 2B, 2 BB. START YOUNG: Tuesday s Opening Day lineup featured 5 players age 25 or younger: Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Travis Shaw, and Blake Swihart... It marked Boston s most Opening Day starters that young since the 1969 team also had 5: Mike Andrews, Tony Conigliaro, Rico Petrocelli, George Scott, and Reggie Smith. With homers on Opening Day both in 2015 and 2016, Betts joins only 4 other players to have homered in multiple Opening Day games at age 23 or younger over the last 20 years...the others are Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, Jason Heyward, and Andruw Jones.
