Aylesbury and District Swimming Club Squad Structure and Training Times 2018 The squad structure is the mechanism that enables swimmers to be grouped according to:- Their abilities relative to Accepted times Their biological age (not chronological age) and training requirements Their attitude and commitment to training Their personal objectives within swimming 1. 3. Learn to Swim The aim of the Learn to Swim (LTS) squads is to develop swimmers through stages 1 to 7 of the ASA National Plan. Swimmers are generally aged 5 through to 9. Swimmers start by developing basic safety awareness along with basic movement and water confidence skills. At stage 7 swimmers will have developed quality stroke techniques up to 100 metres and will be confident, competent and safe in the water. 4. Junior The squad will focus on:- Stroke technique on all four competitive strokes Stroke drill progressions on all four strokes using fins where appropriate Endurance and speed training to prepare swimmers for the next squad Introduction to IM swimming and low level competition Starts, turns and finishes for all four competitive strokes Sculling Lane discipline, using a pace clock and using training equipment To move to the Development squad swimmers will typically be able to do demonstrate all of the following:- 200m f/c with tumble turns and bilateral breathing 200m bk with tumble turns and bent arm pulling action 200m br with correct key hole pull turns 50m fly with fins and correct turns 100m i/m and turns Competitive Start Award and Competitive Turn Award 5. Development Swimmers will have access to three training sessions per week and will be steered towards swimming 200m i/m. The biological age range of swimmers will typically be from 8 to 13 years. The squad will focus on:- Developing and improving stroke techniques for all four strokes Learning and perfecting starts, turns and finishes on all four strokes plus i/m Practicing and perfecting relay takeovers Increasing distance covered to improve endurance Understanding personal goals and objectives Any swimmers who reach the biological age of 13 and who have not met the criteria for the Squad will generally move into one of the two Club Squads Blue or Yellow.
6. Club Blue and Yellow Squads Swimmers will typically be aged 11 to 18 and have access to three or four training sessions per week. Training will continue to focus on the areas of development being worked on in the Development squad with the aim of enabling swimmers to meet the criteria of the Squad. The squad will focus on:- Improving stroke techniques for all four strokes Perfecting starts, turns and finishes on all four strokes plus i/m and relay takeovers Increasing distance covered to improve endurance Learning and practising land exercises that support swimming development Re-evaluating personal goals and objectives The split between Blue and Yellow squad is simply to better utilise training session availability and ensure swimmers of similar speed and endurance train together. Swimmers will be placed in either squad based on the specific dynamics of the squads at any one time. 7. Transition Squad To move to the Transition Squad swimmers will generally be aged 9 and over and will be within 15% of the Accepted 200m I/M time (a range of other swimming events will be considered on an individual basis and at the discretion of the coaching team). Swimmers will also need to demonstrate regular attendance, have a personal objective of competing in the /Regional Championships and be capable of completing both FC and IM based interval sets, for example:- 10 x 100m f/c on 2:10 with correct turns in training 10 x 100m i/m on 2:25 with correct turns in training As well as compete in a 200m IM in a competition without being disqualified. Swimmers will have access to 4 sessions per week. Training will continue to be progressive and will be steered towards the 200 i/m. The aim of the squad is to enable swimmers to qualify for the /Regional Championships. All training zones will be covered through a rounded training programme. Swimmers will learn the use of pace, stroke rate and stroke count. Swimmers will continue to re-evaluate personal goals, objectives and should keep a simple log of training and personal best times. attendance, needed to maintain their progression in line with the Accepted %age criteria set for the squad. 8. Age Group Squad To move to the Age Squad swimmers will generally be aged 10 and over and will be within 10% of the Accepted 200m I/M time (a range of other swimming events will be considered on an individual basis and at the discretion of the coaching team). Swimmers will also need to demonstrate regular attendance to all available training sessions, have a personal objective of competing in the /Regional Championships and be capable of completing:- 10 x 100m f/c on 2:00 with correct turns in training 10 x 100m i/m on 2:15 with correct turns in training 200m i/m in a competition without being disqualified
Swimmers will have access to 5 sessions per week including land training. Training will continue to be progressive and will be steered towards the 200 i/m. The aim of the squad is to enable swimmers to qualify for the /Regional Championships. All training zones will be covered through a rounded training programme. Swimmers will learn the use of pace, stroke rate and stroke count. Swimmers will continue to re-evaluate personal goals, objectives and keep a simple log of training and personal best times. Swimmers will work with the coach to exploit all opportunities available to support their development and progression within the sport. attendance, needed to maintain their progression in line with the Accepted %age criteria set for the squad. 9. Youth/Youth + To move to the Youth Squad swimmers will be generally be aged 13 and over, have a personal objective of competing in the /Regional Championships and be within 10% of the Accepted 200m i/m qualifying time (other swimming events, particularly for senior swimmers, will be considered on an individual basis and at the discretion of the Head Coach). Swimmers will also need to be capable of completing:- 10 x 100m f/c on 1:50 with correct turns in training 10 x 100m i/m on 2:00 with correct turns in training Swimmers will have access to 5 sessions per week (6 for Youth +) including land training. Training will continue to be progressive and start to be specialised to specific events. All training zones will be covered through a rounded training programme Swimmers will continue to re-evaluate personal goals, objectives and keep a log book of training sessions and personal best times (long and short course). Swimmers will work with the coach to exploit all opportunities available to support their development and progression within the sport. attendance to both training and competitions in order to maintain their progression in line with the Accepted %age criteria set for the squad. 11. Aimed at swimmers aged over 19 who still like to train hard and compete up to a National level but need to fit their training around a busy life schedule. Training targets the development and maintenance of stamina and strength. Swimmers will also be asked to represent ADSC in certain inter-club galas.

Review Swimmers will be reviewed throughout the season and moved to the appropriate squad (or given additional sessions to support a transition to the next squad) at the appropriate time. The size of the three Squads will also be taken into account and criteria can be adjusted at any time to ensure the number of swimmers in these squads is not above the maximum. Any swimmer with specific individual issues regarding the training arrangements will be listened to and handled on a case by case basis, ensuring the needs of all swimmers are considered. Any concerns over the squad that a swimmer has been placed in should be discussed with the Head Coach.
