Dear Friends, The First Lady and I welcome you to to the Idaho Pacific International Trapshooting Association Idaho State Trapshooting shoot, sponsored Championship, by the Idaho sponsored PITA and by hosted the PITA by and the Caldwell hosted by Gun the Boise Club Gun Club June June 3 rd through 9th through 5. 11th. As you participate in this competition, keep in mind what Thomas Jefferson had to say in 1785: A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the companion of your walks. You are the inheritors of that proud tradition of firearm sports in America. Even more importantly, you are among those who understand that the Second Amendment right to bear arms comes with a solemn responsibility to do so safely and pass on your values to a new generation of sportsmen. Once again, Miss Lori and I wish you the best of luck this week and in all your future endeavors. As Always Idaho, Esto Perpetua C.L. Ron was many things including an outdoorsman, a fisherman, and a trapshooter. He loved his farm on the Payette River and if you called or stopped for a visit he could tell you what the ducks, geese, pheasants, turkeys, quail, and deer had been doing for the last few days. He was a trapshooter for many years and had wins at the Grand Pacific, the Idaho and Oregon State shoots, and at many gun clubs throughout the area. His family had five shooters - Ron, his dad John, brothers Rick and Dennis and later Ron s son Levi. Ron likes to win, but he was much more proud when Levi did well shooting at the Grand Pacific and later when he won an Idaho State Championship. During his shooting career Ron was generous with his time and resources in the promotion of the sport. For a number of years he ran a shooting supply business where the main goal was to keep shooters in the sport by supplying components at the lowest possible cost. He served on the board of directors for the Ontario Gun Club for a numbers of years including several as President. During the past several years he had been a strong supporter of the youth shooting program at the Snake River Sportsman s club in Ontario with generous donations of money, time, and supplies. Ron liked to can and smoke food and he was generous with this as well. Friends and family were often getting gifts of the items that Ron took great pride in producing. When health problems made it impossible for him to enjoy many of his former activities, he still took great pleasure in talking about past hunts, shoots, and fishing trips with friends and family members. He was a person who enjoyed his many friends and loved his family members very much. To our friend Ron - We hope there are geese and a gun club where you are. 18

In Memory of Bob Murphey Sponsored by Kent Harris Over a large number of years Bob Murphey put more time, effort and work into the Caldwell and Marsing Gun Clubs than any other person. What these clubs are today is due in large part to the dedication of Bob and others like him. Bob was mechanically inclined and he enjoyed fixing things and building things. His efforts covered almost every physical aspect of these clubs - from construction projects such as adding trap fields and houses, repair of trap machines, clubhouse renovation, installation of fireplaces, to grounds maintenance and clean-up. Bob was a serious registered trapshooter and did much of the work necessary to conduct shoots at the local club level. Whatever needed to be done, he could and would do it. Along with his efforts at the clubs he was involved with, Bob also worked to promote shooting at the State level and was a member of the Idaho PITA board of directors for several years helping plan and conduct the State Shoot. Bob enjoyed traveling to shoots all over the Northwest and made a lot of friends and won a lot of trophies over the years including two Veteran and one Elder Idaho State Singles Championships. He also broke 200 straight and tied for the open singles championship one time. For several years he was able to shoot with his son Brian who won the Sub-Junior Singles Championship one year. He took satisfaction from doing a job well and was proud of the improvements and accomplishments he achieved for himself and for the sport of trapshooting over the many years he was involved. Idaho shooters owe a debt to Bob Murphey and others like him who pitch in and don t wait for someone else to do what needs to be done. 20
