The Garden Route The Garden Route is a beautiful destination to visit. Stretching from Mossel Bay to Storms River and encompassing the towns of Knysna, Oudtshoorn, George, Plettenberg Bay, Sedgefield and Wilderness this is a coastal wonder land with many fantastic things to see and do. Cape Town Mother Nature surpassed herself when crafting the Mother City. Perched between the ocean and the mountain, with a national park at its heart, there is nowhere like Cape Town. Affectionately referred to as The Mother City, Cape Town is the oldest city in South Africa and has a cultural heritage spanning more than 300 years. The Stellenbosch Winelands The fertile green valleys of the Cape Winelands, origin of some of the world's most popular wines, is a must see experience in close proximity to Cape Town. Wine tasting, winemaking tours, excellent cuisine and historical landmarks collectively create an irresistible attraction in a region which boasts some of the most majestic scenery in South Africa. Most Cape wine estates are characterised by classic Cape Dutch-style buildings and vast vineyards with picturesque mountains as a backdrop. There is also a distinct European influence in a number of regions, thanks to the arrival of French Huguenot, Dutch and German settlers during the 16th century. Stellenbosch In 1679 Governor Simon Van der Stel undertook his first inspection tour of the outposts. On the 8 November he pitched his camp on the banks of the Eerste River ( first ) and was so enchanted with the surrounding that he decided to found a settlement there and call it Stellenbosch. This was the origin of South Africa s first town. The large number of oaks that line the streets have given the town the colloquial name Eikestad meaning City of Oaks. Today there are almost 600 farms in the Stellenbosch region. Many of these farms still boast the original Cape Dutch Homesteads built in the late 17th and early 18th century. Of these 600 farms, there are approximately 80 wine estates. Many thousands of visitors follow the wine routes every year, to taste and buy wine and experience the hospitality for which the valleys have become famous. The names of some of these estates are household words wherever fine wines are appreciated.
The Kruger National Park & Sabi Sand The Kruger National Park is 2.2 Million hectares and is the size of Switzerland. This spectacular reserve is South Africa s biggest and is the most well known national park in Southern Africa. Private concessions have been created and are totally open to the rest of the Kruger, hence some excellent game viewing. Due to the fact that the reserves are privately owned, (unlike many reserves throughout Africa) your Ranger is able to drive off road and this enables you to get up close and personal to the wildlife. Secondly because of the private ownership, these reserves are not governed by state law and therefore you are able to drive at night. The greatest advantage of an evening game drive is the increased likeliness of encountering the Big Five and in particular the Lions and Leopards as they hunt. Accommodation Jock Private Safari Lodge The concept of Jock Safari Lodge was born by the descendants of the Sir Percy Fitzpatrick and Niven Family. They used the funds of the trust of Sir Fitzpatrick, to build the lodge in the area close to where the history of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick & his dog Jock, took place. The Jock concession is the exact side profile of Jock the dog. In 1982 the Niven Family built a fence around the camp and that helped in preserving all the trees from destruction by visiting elephants. The Montagu course is a much celebrated parkland course and has been ranked as the number-one golf course in South Africa in the past. Golf Pinnacle Point (Mosselbay-Garden Route) Pinnacle Point Mossel Bay The Pinnacle Point Golf Course is something truly unique for the discerning golfer. This 18 hole championship golf course was designed by well-known South African golf course architect Peter Matkovich who opened the course together with top Irish Tour Professional Darren Clarke in November 2006. Darren Clarke, who was also involved with many aspects of the Pinnacle Point course design, has said that Pinnacle Point is... the best golf course on the planet. This Cliff top Fynbos Golf Course inspires the golfer to play this challenging layout with a level of respect due to its dramatic views and breath-taking terrain. The 72 par layout is characterised by 7 majestic holes that line the Indian Ocean rock cliffs, four of which are played over ocean and cliff.
What to pack for your Safari Many of you will remember the scenes from Out of Africa when Karen Blixen went on Safari with everything including the kitchen sink and the gramophone! Luckily for us the lodges are so well equipped you can leave your hairdryer at home. Rest assured that they will have one there for you. Clothing Jackets, Hats, Shoes Safaris are generally casual affairs, even at the high end camps, so no need to bring evening wear but you'll want to be warm and comfortable. Make sure all your clothes are not too bright in colour - that includes white. Bring clothes that are loose fitting and comfortable, and which you don't mind getting dirty. It will be chilly in the early morning when you start your game drive, so you'll need to layer up and bring a fleece. At night, there will usually be a campfire to keep warm, but you will want to wear long sleeves and trousers to cover yourself up and avoid those mosquitoes etc. Hats and caps - Broad brimmed hat as well as cap. Boots and socks for game drives and game walks - Many of the safari lodges include Bush Walks as part of your game drive activities. Leave the Jimmy Choos at home! Sandals or open footwear to wear around camp during the day. A small back pack orrucksack for game walks. A light jacket or windbreaker for game drives in summer - Even during the summer the temperatures can drop significantly after sunset. Don t forget long pants to protect you from the mosquitos. Pale and natural coloured clothing so you blend in with the bush - Look the part and wear neutral colours. For walking safaris do not wear white or cream. A sarong and swimming costume - Most of the camps have pools and even during winter months its hot enough to sun bathe and relax around the camp. Dress Code - The lodges in Africa have a very relaxed dress code. There is no need to dress up for dinner. Sometimes its nice to freshen up before dinner but sometimes the game viewing is so good that time does not allow for it! The weather in April On the Garden Route and in Cape Town, the average midday temperature during the months of February and early March is 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Night time temperatures are on average in the region of 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The Kruger Park is a little warmer during this time of the year, with an average midday temperature of 89 degrees Fahrenheit going down to 70 degrees fahrenheit in the evenings.
