resort view 3 Editor Tan Sze Wah theeditorspeaks Dear Members, Our SAF/NS day golf competition this year was held in conjunction with our SAF50 celebrations. The competition was held at Changi resort and all participants had a great golf outing and dinner. We would also like to convey special thanks to our sponsor for the commemorative item given out during the event. Look out for photos of yourself and friends in the following pages. Our National Day celebrations are just over and this year was special as Singapore celebrates its 50th year of independence. Many of us thoroughly enjoyed watching the NDP parade which had many of our members involved. There was an open house at our Seasports centre during that week and many visitors got to try out its many exciting facilities. Looking ahead we are organising a mooncake lantern party for children and the very popular Oktoberfest is ON. Do note that you have to sign up early as Oktoberfest sells out fast. Construction of the new golf course is on schedule and we are updating you in this issue. The club is planning many new facilities for the future and the Engagement committee will be holding sessions to gather feedback for planning. Do speak to them about your ideas. On the international sporting scene, congratulations to our member Joey Yeo for winning the Bowling World Open women singles championship. We are very proud of her and hope that this will inspire more of our members to reach the top echelons of their sports. You can read about her exploits here. There will be a change of leadership at NSRCC as our Club President, Chief of Defence Force LG Ng Chee Meng has retired and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours. I am sure he will still visit our club regularly to see us and check on our progress. Taking over as Club President is MG Perry Lim, who is no stranger to our club and we look forward to his leadership bringing our club to the next level of development. Have a good read, Sze Wah

resort view 4 seen&heard Joey Yeo Wins Inaugural Bowling World Open SRCC s very own Joey Yeo has won N the inaugural Bowling World Open women s singles title in Japan. The event was conducted by World Bowling in cooperation with the Japan Bowling Congress and the National Bowling Federation of Japan, as part of the sport s bid for inclusion in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The 17-year-old beat German Birgit Poppler 207-204 in the play-off final at the Makuhari-Messe exhibition hall on the outskirts of Tokyo, earning 10 million yen (S$110,052) for her victory. The news took some time to sink in for the modest athlete, who entered the competition without expectations. It s quite funny because qualifying is two days, and you have one day of finals, and then the final day is the TV finals. I actually qualified only on the last possible squad, so I almost didn t qualify, and then I was like, okay, I qualified. Then I bowl 5 games, and I was like, Oh I made top 33, because there s a cut. And then you bowl three more games and then I m like, Oh I m second. So I get to bowl in the TV finals tomorrow [laughs]. January and was part of the Singapore team in last year s Asian Games in Incheon. The driven young lady is currently preparing for her A Levels at Raffles Institution (Junior College), but yet the NSRCC junior member can be seen clocking in her practice sessions at the Resort Bowl without fail. The kegler, who has been bowling for almost a decade, started bowling under the influence of her brothers, who are accomplished keglers as well. In fact, it s all in the family; her father Jeffrey Yeo, a NSRCC member, and mother Janice Ng, enjoy bowling leisurely. Beyond her bowling career, she hopes to study physiotherapy at Singapore Institute of Technology in the future. While bowling is a solitary sport, she credits the opportunities to play against other keglers at Resort Bowl s various leagues as a factor for her success. Joey receiving a token of congratulations from Mr Ng Heng Chew, NSRCC GM. And then after the TV finals you re like, Oh. I won. Whoa. It s very surreal; I don t know how to explain it. It s just, like, you can t believe that it s reality. She had previously won a trios gold medal in the Asian Bowling Championships in I represent the club at youth interclub leagues, and I guess that has played quite a significant role in building up my mental strength, because Auntie Florence (Khemlani, Family Recreation Convenor) likes to put me as the anchor bowler. It has definitely helped, because when you need to strike out on the last frame, or you need to have a high pin count, and it s, for that one point... That weekly exposure to such kind of pressure, it does train you to become a stronger bowler, said Joey. To congratulate her on her victory, the Club presented her with a congratulatory package with vouchers for bungalow and bowling. As she works towards qualifying for the World Women Championships in November, here s wishing her greater success in the future! Wishing you more turkeys in the future! Joey when she won the Ladies Category at the NSRCC Annual Bowling Championships 2014

resort view 6 Learn How to Take Care of Your Bicycle with Park Tool School seen&heard A customised Father s Day badge was given as a simple token of appreciation to all the gentlemen participants and Instructor. Park Tool School hosted two special sessions of their Bicycle Maintenance Workshops for Father s Day and National Day. group of cyclists attended the bicycle maintenance workshop on 27 June. The A day started with the Novice-Basic course, which covered the identification of the bicycle s parts, basic troubleshooting, minor repair works, cleaning and taking care of the bike. Participants who opted for the Advanced course stayed on for a more in-depth tutorial after the lunch break. A punctured tire is probably one of the things every cyclist fears most. Participants tried their hands at fixing punctured tires and pumping air. While initially tedious, they were able to perform the tasks with confidence once they had enough practice. With this essential skill, cyclists will no longer find their outings derailed by unexpected punctures. The Advanced course was more intensive, with more hands-on practice on removing bicycle parts, assembling it back, tuning and adjusting to the correct pressure. NSRCC Hari Raya Flea Market In celebration of National Day, Park Tool School also hosted a SG50 Bicycle Maintenance Workshop with special discounted rates on 8 August. A group of supportive Singaporeans registered for this workshop and brought back several techniques and skills for their daily cycling activities. Safety tips, troubleshooting, basic cleaning, basic maintenance and overhaul of the bike were some topics covered. Mr Lam, an aircraft engineer, said, An aircraft is bigger than a bike but to do an operation to a bike must have the skills that I ve learnt today; similar but definitely different. endors set up shop at the Hari Raya Flea Market held two weeks prior to Hari V Raya Puasa on 4 and 5 July. Merchandise ranged from a variety of clothing, bags, shoes, books, and home decorations, as well as toys and titbits for the young patrons. Shoppers had fun indulging in some pre-festive season shopping at the Main Lobby. Conversation between young seller & buyer Buyer: 1 pack of titbits is 20 cents? Can I have 6 packs please? Seller: Yes. Sure. Total is $1.20 please. Buyer: Any discount? Seller: Arrggghh Uhmmm ok. $1.00 will do for 6 packs of titbits. Buyer: Thank you.

seen&heard resort view 7 An Exclusive From the Engagement Committee! Voices of the Engagement Committee n the blink of an eye, we are already in the 3rd quarter of 2015, which is soon coming to a close and what an I eventful year it has been for NSRCC, so far! Since January 2015, the Club has been undergoing extensive enhancements & changes to both our golfing and social facilities for members greater enjoyment. On the greens, it would be hard not to notice that our Army course has been undergoing major reconfiguration since March 2015, and is due for completion by end of year. As the vast majority of our members are golfers, we trust this is definitely something all of us are anticipating! On the other hand, the temporary 9-hole has been serving us well since the closure of Army course. We hope that you do understand the Club has made the best of what we could with the remaining land to ensure that the golf course remains 18-holes playable, at all times. We are also glad to see that the members are pleased with the temporary driving range. Fine-tuning of this facility would be on-going, as the management understands the need to make it more efficient for practicing. Those who attended the Town hall session in January 2015 would have been given a broader idea of the future plans of NSRCC. Comprehensive plans have been charted out carefully for the Club s long term positioning. Feedback from our members and NSmen were sought in the process to help chart out some of the new additions to the club. Other minor facility enhancements have also been carried out during the year. Most of us would already be entering the grounds of the clubhouse with ease, since the upgrade to CEPAS-compliant cards in the carparks. And with the recent changes in our bungalow that started end of 2014, this saw new coats of paint both inside and outside of the 40 units. Our bustling Resort Bowl has also replaced its scoring system and new player consoles installed at every lane. The Resort side has been putting in a lot of hard work to make sure we are up-to-date with these latest features! Our F&B outlets at both locations have been introducing new dishes and promotions, in addition to their daily menus. Service standards-wise, we do understand that there will be lapses occasionally, but with the guidance of the club management, we notice the positive difference in the service rendered. To conclude, the Club does hear your voice and will strive in continuing to work hard in all aspects of our services to provide a better experience for all members. The Engagement Committee will always be the connecting bridge between the Club and members, in ensuring that your valuable feedback is heard. If you have any comments and suggestions that you would like to share with us on both social & golfing facilities, please drop us a line at engage@nsrcc.com.sg Andrew Kwa Chairman, Engagement Committee

seen&heard resort resort view 9 view 9 We Welcome Our New Club President, Major-General Perry Lim The 18th of August 2015 is eminently a day of significance for our Club, as MG Perry Lim took on his new appointment of Chief of Defence Force with the Singapore Armed Forces, and also assumed the role as President of National Service Resort & Country Club. Journey with SAF MG Lim began his military career with Singapore Armed Forces in December 1990. Over the years, he has held various key command and staff appointments with the Singapore Armed Forces. These include Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion Singapore Guards, Commander of the 7th Singapore Infantry Brigade, Commander of the 3rd Division and Chief of Staff (General Staff), to name a few Before he took over as Singapore s 9th Chief of Defence Force, MG Lim held the appointment as Chief of Army since 2014. MG Lim was also awarded the Public Administration Medal (Silver) (Military) in 2010. From 2006 to 2008, he served as Director of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education, where he was responsible for formulating policies, planning and funding for the Singapore university and technical education sectors, and regulating the private education sector. President of NSRCC He will be the 8th President of NSRCC since its inception in 1992. With his valuable experience throughout his leadership career in the SAF, he will be able to help the club soar to greater heights. The Management & Staff of NSRCC would like to extend a warm welcome to MG Lim, and look forward to his leadership and guidance as President of NSRCC.

resort view 10 seen&heard NSRCC Bids Adieu, to Club President LG Ng Chee Meng He was the Club s 7th President, taking over from LG (Ret) Neo Kian Hong since March 2013. During LG Ng s tenure as Club President, he has successfully spearheaded the betterment of NSRCC for our members with his clear vision and leadership. The Club has continued to commit itself to provide affordable and quality resort and country club facilities to its members despite challenges, such as the recent loss of a part of its land for airport development. LG Ng has led the Club to work closely with various agencies and consultants to develop a comprehensive set of plans for the future of NSRCC. He also directed the completion of a strategic review project, where the long term positioning of NSRCC was charted out. As a result, a range of recommendations including golf course reconfiguration, recreational hub, additional chalets, and other social facilities could be considered in the near future. These will eventually shape the future of our Club, in terms of both our recreational and golfing facilities for NSmen and their families enjoyment. LG Ng also recognised the need for the Club to continue working hard in all aspects of our services to provide a better experience for the members. These included active engagement with members, regular facilities enhancements, partnership with quality operators, etc. These combined initiatives contributed significantly to members satisfaction rating, reaching a high of 92% in 2014. With LG Ng s vast experience in managing other SAF clubs, we have indeed benefited from his guidance, where greater emphasis was placed on good corporate governance and prudence in the usage of funds. In addition, his strong advocacy of corporate social responsibility has enabled the Club to successfully raise $328,000 and $316,000 for the underprivileged during the Club s flagship annual charity events in 2014 and 2015. On behalf of the Club, the management and its committees would like to express our appreciation to LG Ng Chee Meng, for his guidance, steady leadership, and excellent service rendered to NSRCC for the past 2 years. LG Ng, here is wishing you great success on your future endeavours!

onpar resort view 13 Practice Training Programs I t could be argued the game of golf is divided into these 4 fairly equal components the long game, the short game, the putting game and the mental game. Every component of the game needs to develop together in order for you to be a champion golfer. If you have a weakness in any one of these 4 areas then you still stand a chance of being a champion golfer but if you are weak in any two of them, you basically rule out the chances of being a champion golfer. Not that we all strive to be a champion golfer but the message is there. If you want to improve your game then you need to look at all parts and develop them together. If you have weaknesses in your game, then those weaknesses need to be addressed and due attention needs to be given to fix them up in order to improve but it can t be at the expense of losing your strengths inadvertently through neglect. Which brings me to an important point, how to structure your practice training programs. Firstly you need to develop some self assessment tools to gauge where your game is at. Simple ones, doesn t have to be elaborate - some call them skills tests. These tools need to remain constant so that when you re-assess your game using these tools down the track you are sure that you are comparing apples with apples. Periodically you need to conduct these self assessments to see where you are at again before you restructure your practice time and go out and work on your game. So in order to see steady improvement in your game you must have a balance when you practice. You must have an objective before you come out and aimlessly whacking balls is really not going to get you the results you want. The mental side of the game is inherent through all aspects of training and as your level of play improves, more emphasis is placed on the mental aspects of the game. If you discover weaknesses, spend just a little more time on that weakness but NEVER at the expense of neglecting any other part of your training program. Less time, yes, but still have contact with everything. Oh, and by the way, the 3-hour Training Program does not mean you must practice for 3 hours in one hit! It just means that for every 3 hours of practice, this is what you should cover. That maybe split however you like, into 2 sessions of 90 minutes or 3 sessions of 1 hour, it doesn t matter. Hope this helps your game! Drop by our Academy for help we can help get your game back on the rails. Phil Brew Director Phil Brew Golf Academy

onpar GOLF resort view 15 resort view 15 Rules 8-2 and 16-1 cover play on the putting green. Rule 8-2(b) states that when a player s ball is on the putting green, the player s caddie or partner must not TOUCH the green surface to point out a line for play. They may point a line for putting only BEFORE the player makes the stroke but the surface must not be touched. Therefore your golf partner could point to you where to putt but he must not touch the green and must stop indicating before you make your stroke. Otherwise there is a 2 stroke penalty in Strokeplay and loss of hole in Matchplay. Player must NOT press down on line of putt. We often see golfers use their putter to tap the putting surface during a round of golf. Rule 16-1 states players are not allowed to use their club to press down on their line of putt which is defined in the rules as the line a player wishes his ball to take after a stroke. It also includes a reasonable distance on either side of the line but not after the hole. So be careful when you are using your putter to remove sand not to press down on the grass on your line of putt. Penalty is 2 strokes in Strokeplay and loss of hole in Matchplay. Putting Green must NOT be TOUCHED when indicating line of putt.

A Day to Recognise Our NSmen or a second year, NSRCC combined F celebrations of both SAF & NS Day, which indeed holds a lot of significance as we recognise the contributions of SAF, who are at the forefront of defending our nation. On July 5th 2015, NSRCC hosted this combined celebration, graced by our Club President, LG Ng Chee Meng and with over 200 golfers competing in the golf tournament. Every golfer present of course had one thing on their agenda (apart from having a great golf game!): to be amongst one of the prize winners for the day! The day rounded off with dinner held at JUMBO, where everyone gathered for the prize presentation ceremony and also anticipated the scrumptious delights that were to be served for dinner! We re looking forward to our next club event!

resort view 18 onpar View from Hole #9. Grass has been planted 2 months. View from #8 blue tee. Grass on white tee is down. No rolling yet New 9-hole Development Update Construction works for the new 9-hole is entering its final stages, and we cannot be any more excited as the site begins to increasingly resemble a proper golf course! We are sure that everyone has gotten a peek at the things to come over the hoarding panels, but here s a real good look at the current diamond-in-the-rough that the new 9-hole is. Grassing Process Bales of grass are imported from Thailand for the fairways and rough. They are applied in patches and clumps onto the ground. Given time, the grass will take root and grow to become denser. After rolling, the grass will resemble more like the neat fairways golfers are used to.

onpar resort view 19 The largest of lakes in the new 9-hole will feature a man-made waterfall and be the main reservoir for the course. Clever design between the various water bodies will ensure that all lakes are filled with water, even during dry seasons, as water can be diverting from one to the other using dams. Abundant storage of water will also aid in reducing water costs for the Club. The largest lake in the new 9-hole is flanked by Hole #3, #4, and #5. A signature feature of the new 9hole, it has a waterfall and will be visible even from the clubhouse. Construction of lake slope protection at Hole #8 has been completed, and grassing is looking good as well. View from the mound that will eventually becoming the top of the waterfall at Hole #5. Part of the water feature from the old course will be retained and incorporated with the new design. Boulders are gathered for the formation of the waterfall. Hole #6 green. Hole #3. With its location next to a lake, the completed Green #3 will appear to be floating out from the water, similar to an island green. Construction of pedestrian bridge at Hole 5

Designed by American Andy Dye, the course is characterized by heavily mounded fairways, set between uphill slopes top create the impression of golfing through shallow valleys, punctured by huge bunkers and lined by strategic water. The golf course consists of three nine-hole loops that play away from and back towards the clubhouse. The West Course, which is the longest of the three nines, is fully lit for night golfing. This is also where Orna s signature hole, the par three 12th that plays from elevated tees to a dramatic island green, is located. In&AroundNSRCC Get Healthy @ NSRCC! resort view 23 Is Dark Chocolate Believe it or not, this stuff is actually good for us! a Superfood? A single ounce of dark chocolate is packed with literally dozens of nutrients and disease fighters, including flavonoids-powerful antioxidants that mop up the cell-damaging free radicals that have been linked to heart disease and cancer. Choose alkaline-free cocoa products, such as Hershey s Cocoa, for the most powerful flavonoid punch. There are also Dutch dark chocolates on the market, but they re processed with alkaline to reduce bitterness, which drastically lowers flavonoid goodness. Besides fighting heart disease, chocolate can help keep your ticker in tip-top shape! Research shows that as part of a balanced, low fat eating plan, a regular dose of cocoa powder can raise good HDL cholesterol and lower total blood cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of clogged arteries that choke up the blood supply to our heart. Chocolate also helps reduce inflammation in blood vessels, keeping them pliable and capable of fully dilating for optimum blood flow to your heart and other working muscles. Cocoa powder may help your heart in other ways too. Long considered an aphrodisiac, cocoa beans contain phenylethamine, a feel-good chemical that triggers the release of opiatelike endorphins in the brain. Once the endorphins are released, they spike the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure. Other Chocolate-ish Facts! Dark chocolate has more cacao (the beans that chocolate are made from) and less sugar than other chocolates, so it is considered healthier than milk and white chocolate. It may also protect your skin against the sun! The flavanols can protect against sun-induced damage, improve blood flow to the skin and increase skin density and hydration. Potassium, copper, magnesium and iron. this wonderful delicacy contains some of these amazing vitamins and minerals in high concentrations!
