Glenbrook South Titan Poms Dance Team Handbook Director Ms. Julie Smith GLENBROOK SOUTH TITAN POMS 4000 West Lake Avenue Glenview, IL 60026 (847) 486-4661

Glenbrook High Schools and State Rules Governing Extracurricular Activities Glenbrook South High School authorizes student participation in extracurricular activities and set the minimum standards for eligibility and membership maintenance based on attendance and grades. These policies include minimum requirements. CAMPUS AND DISTRICT RULES A Titan Pom shall provide a spirit-promoting service, be loyal, have high morals and standards, be a good example in and out of school, and develop self-discipline and confidence. She shall also have poise, good posture, and present a good appearance. Being a Titan Pom is an honor. In order to be as "good" as our tradition and history warrants, hard work and discipline are basic components of the program. A Titan Pom s commitment is to both academics and the Titan Pom Organization. Organization Director The Glenbrook South Titan Poms organization is under the direction and supervision of the Director, Julie Smith. Our faculty advisor is Assistant Principal of Student Activities, Dr. Jim Shellard. Purpose of Organization To promote appropriate and positive spirit. To develop good sportsmanship, self-confidence, and self-discipline. To promote leadership. To encourage high morals and standards among its members. To develop the ability to work as a part of a group in achieving common goals; TEAMWORK. To represent the school and community in an exemplary manner, serving as a role model for appropriate behavior and citizenship. To develop and maintain a very high standard of precision dance. Selection and Eligibility Members are selected by an impartial panel of qualified judges and must audition each year. Any candidate wanting to gain membership to the organization must first meet the eligibility requirements and attend the series of rehearsals prior to the scheduled auditions. The candidates will be judged on their poise, technique, skills, dance ability, and showmanship.

AUDITION ELIGIBILITY 1. All returning members must audition including elected captains. Being a member of the team does not guarantee reinstatement for the following year. 2. Each candidate should be in good physical condition due to the vigorous nature of the physical activity required. 3. Prior to auditions, each candidate must have turned into the Director: application, teacher recommendations (if required), and any other required information. MANDATORY REHEARSALS All rehearsals are mandatory. PERFORMANCES 1. There will be daily after school rehearsals throughout the year (May June, August March). 2. Summer school camp is required for Varsity members. Non participation in summer camp may lead to loss of spots in dances. 3. There will be several evening and Saturday rehearsals in preparation for competition season. 4. There will be designated choreography weekends in which students MUST attend or they are not eligible for the competition squad. 5. Members are expected to be on time for rehearsals and remain the full time. 6. Sitting out for illness or injury during rehearsal may result in being pulled from a performance. If a Titan Pom is truly injured or ill, it is in her best interest and the team s that she not rehearse or perform until she is well. Performances are a time when the community directly observes the Titan Poms Organization. Each girl is expected to be an exemplary representative of the group. All performances are mandatory unless otherwise specified. 1. Titan Poms must audition for each performance. 2. The director decides who participates in each performance. 3. All Titan Poms will attend all performances unless otherwise specified by the director. 4. A member must meet the "Attendance Policy" requirements in order to be eligible to perform 1. Students must attend the two practices prior to the performance as well as the day of performance in order to be eligible to perform. 2. Students must be in attendance for the entirety of a week preceding a competition in order to be eligible to compete. 3. There are NO exceptions to this rule 5. Any member who is late for a performance may not be eligible to perform.

6. Absence from school on game day may automatically exclude the member from the game performance. 7. Any member attending an event following a performance must change to appropriate clothing. No part of the uniform shall be worn anywhere except to activities in which the group is designated to perform. Inappropriate pictures taken in uniform will be grounds for code of conduct violation. TRAVEL CAPTAINS 1. Members must ride to all performances on buses supplied by the school district. 2. Out of town, or overnight trips will be addressed by the director preceding the trip. Rules and regulations pertaining to those trips will be given out to each member preceding the trip. Noncompliance with those rules and regulations may result in loss of membership, and/or disciplinary action by the school. All officers are responsible for complying with the following rules in conjunction with the general rules of the Titan Pom organization. 1. Must have been a member of the Titan Poms the full year prior to their year of office. 2. Must be a member in EXCELLENT standing with the school and the director. 3. An officer may lose her office if she is involved in a Code of Conduct violation. ATTENDANCE/PERFORMANCE POLICY I. Introduction Ideally, Titan Poms should be in all classes every day. Extenuating circumstances do occasionally exist that prevent this from happening. If absent for any reason, all or part of the day, the Titan Pom or her parent(s) must call the Director.. II. Eligibility for attending afterschool rehearsals and performances A. A Titan Pom must be in school for at least half of the day on a given day in order to attend that day s after school rehearsal or performance. She may attend if she has been at a school sponsored function. III. Titan Pom Costume Policy

A. A Titan Pom is responsible for bringing necessary components of her costume to all performances and competitions. If a Titan Pom does not bring the required costume elements she will not dance. B. Costumes that belong to Glenbrook South should be treated with the utmost care and returned to the coach promptly and carefully. C. If a costume is returned damaged the student will be responsible for the cost of replacing or repairing the costume. IV. Potential Titan Pom Activities PARTICIPATION The Titan Poms are expected to attend various functions throughout the year. Anyone missing any activity without prior approval (one weeks notice, if not an emergency) may forfeit their participation in the next activity. For example, if you do not compete at the competition prior to Nationals you will not perform at Nationals. A. Competition - students must audition and be selected to perform in both dances being competed.. B. Football Games C. Basketball Games D. Dance Show E. Open Gym F. Parades (Homecoming, Thanksgiving) G. Pep Rallies H. Other Director designated activities B. Loss of membership can occur for violations of any rules or district policies, including those in this handbook. The director and/or principal may determine appropriate disciplinary action for any conduct deemed inappropriate for a member of this organization while on campus or off campus throughout the calendar year. C. A Titan Pom will be held accountable for her behavior at all times. Her behavior outside of the program is as important as her behavior while she is participating. She is to be a responsible member through the summer months, the weekends, weekdays, and any vacation time. The director does not and will not have to tolerate inappropriate behavior from any member CHOREOGRAPHER Titan Pom members will work with choreographers under the discretion of the Director. This competition in the past has had 20 high schools competing. We provide and will sell food and drink. February Junior All Stars Girls spend the day teaching younger girls a dance routine which is performed at the halftime of the basketball game. There is also an adult focused fitness event. BOOSTER CLUB Parents of Titan Poms are encouraged to be active members of Titan Pom Booster Club. Meetings are held monthly. The Titan Pom Booster Club provides funding for the Titan Pom Organization through fundraising activities. Each family will be asked to participate in fundraising activities and raise their share of the budget during the year. SCHEDULE The Titan Poms maintain a very busy schedule. The students are in session beginning after the tryouts in May and continue to practice throughout the summer and daily during the school year until the season ends in March. Titan Poms perform at all football and basketball games. They compete during the competition season of November February. It is important to understand that the Titan Pom commitment is large and does not allow for participation in many activities. This Handbook is meant to be a basic operating instrument and is not intended to cover every operating or disciplinary policy. It should be included in the yearly membership

packet.
