Rugby Rules and Scoring Scoring: A score in rugby is called a Try. o A try is worth 5 points. o A player must touch the ball to the ground in the end zone for it to be a successful score. Tap and go is a quick play used to restart after a penalty. The ball must leave the players hands and make contact with their foot in order for it to be legal Ruck is the equivalent to offensive line man banging into each other in football. When a player is tackled they have to release the ball. When they release the ball the defense is allowed to take the ball. It is the offensive player s job to ruck over the ball and create an off- sides line. Ruck is the term used to describe clearing out, it is what happens every time a player is tackled Scrum = a set piece that restarts the game after a foul. The 8 forwards from each team line up in an identical pattern. On the referee s call they interlock and push into each other. Lineout = a set piece that restarts the game after the ball goes out of bounds. A predetermined number of players from each team form a tunnel. The hooker throws the ball in overhand. Teams are allowed to pick up players to get them above the other team.

RULES FOR ULTIMATE RUGBY: 1. Initiate Play: Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective end zone line. The defense kicks the ball (pop, or grubber) to start the game. 2. Scoring: Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's end zone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score. 3. Movement of the Ball: The ball may be advanced in any direction by completing a rugby pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the ball. The person with the ball ("passer") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the passer ("marker") counts out the stall count. 4. Change of Possession: When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception, stalled), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense. 5. Substitutions: Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout. 6. Non- contact: No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made. 7. Fouls: When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone. 8. Self- Officiating: Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes. 9. Spirit of the Game: Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play.
