Editorial & Appointments As we approach the third quarter of 2015, we are excited about the opening of our new driving range in August 2015. The driving range had been undergoing landscaping works and laid with zoysia grass to make your driving experience a lot more pleasant. Our House Committee had also been busy bringing to you the children s camp over 3 days in June 2015. Also, the club is planning numerous activities for family bonding and socialising with other members with events such as the National Day Family Carnival on Sat, 15 August 2015 and Fort Siloso Day out on Sat, 5 September 2015. Let s make a date at the end of September when we would organise the SCC AGM at the Banquet Hall. See you and keep your spirits high. In & Around By COL (Ret) Eugene Cheong Hello Everyone, In case you haven t noticed, we are already standing on the half-way point of 2015! Time goes by us so quickly, sometimes. So it s nice to take a step back once in a while, spend some time with the family, spend some time with our friends, have a nice relaxing game of golf, and just be happy. Annual Survey 2015 You may have noticed the surveyors going around in May and June to ask for your feedback. Let me first thank all of you who participated in this year s survey. Last year, we received feedback from you that the survey questionnaire was too long. So this year, to ease the problem, we conducted two separate surveys. The first survey will help us to identify our service gaps and improve on our customer service capabilities and build on our service quality initiatives. The second one focused on getting to know our members needs and preferences. I am so pleased that some of you volunteered to do both surveys. Thank you all so much for the patience and understanding you ve shown in enthusiastically filling up the survey forms. By knowing where we ve fallen short, we can work at improving ourselves. By knowing where we ve done well, we can work at repeating those successes. Driving Range Renovations Have you missed the driving range? We have good news! Renovations are set to be completed in August 2015, and we hope the improvements made would enhance your recreational experience! We are all looking forward to practising our shots at our own driving range again! Children s Camp The children s camp was held from 2 Jun to 4 Jun at our club. Over the three days, the event saw a substantial number of participants, varying from of four to 12 years old. The children filled our club with their innocent laughter, ran around the play zones with endless bouts of energy and participated enthusiastically in our planned activities. The camp experience was further enhanced by allowing children to form close bonds and new friendships, and in turn, strengthen the foundations of their social development skills. The children immensely enjoyed the various activities arranged for them, ranging from rock climbing to assisted horseback riding. 02

In & Around When it was time for them to depart for home, marking the end of the camp, many refused to leave unless their parents promised to let them join the upcoming one! Junior & Family Swimming Meet On a sunny and bright morning on the last Saturday of the June school holidays (27 June 2014), we held our Junior & Family Swimming Meet, attended by both young participants and parents on this funfilled day. There were various team building activities, such as the Family Relay, Family LifeSafer Race and Life Buoy Relay! The Junior & Family Swimming Meet concluded with a prize giving ceremony, where winners of the 30 metres race received medals for their triumph. Congratulations to all winners! We would like to thank all members and participants who came down and supported this event. It was a wonderful Saturday morning indeed! Outstanding Staff Award Our outstanding staff awards for April to June 2015 is out! Thank you for acknowledging and giving us feedback about our staff who have been providing you with good customer service. We congratulate Gai, Amir, David, Zura, Jay and Mandon, from the Golfing Department, and Vijay, Kumar, Ah Moi, Soo Gek and Ah Soo from the Operations Department! I am sure they will be motivated to continue to strive to provide you with excellent service. Conclusion In closing, let me just announce that our Annual General Meeting this year will be held at the end of September 2015 in the Banquet Hall. More details will be announced in the website, notice boards and also our Facebook page. We ll also be sending you a notice of the AGM via post. Do come down for the AGM this year. Let me also take this opportunity to congratulate all those Members who have been promoted this year on the 1 July 2015. You truly deserve your promotion, and we are proud to have you serving our Nation. And to everyone, I would like to wish a Selamat Hari Raya Puasa, a Happy SAF Day, and a Happy National Day! 03

Captain s Column By ME7 Derric Low Bah Soon Fellow Sembawangrians, The past 3 months had flown by us yet again. Even though time seems to be quickly passing by, I m happy to share that the club had made several progress in pushing through initiatives designed to enhance your golfing experience in. Firstly, I would also like to thank our members for their enthusiasm in participating in our interclub league selection. This year, we saw the highest number of interested participants signed up for the selection games. I am proud to see such a high level of interest from our members in representing our club competitively. For those who had been selected, fight for every match and do our club proud, and I would like to encourage all members to continue to support our team. Our league players were not the only ones who had the opportunity to play in many of the golf courses around our country. Over the past few years, our list of reciprocal clubs had grown to include almost all clubs in Singapore, and our reciprocal relationships with overseas clubs had also grown from strength to strength. I hope that these initiatives have enabled you to have a diverse golfing experience, playing golf beyond our own course. This quarter also saw the temporary closing down of our golf range for enhancement works to provide a better environment for you to sharpen your skills. Significant landscaping works, including a landing area of zoysia grass, are progressing well and we are looking forward to the completion of the works in July, followed by our opening ceremony in August. I have always felt that a positive practice session can provide a positive foundation on which your golfing experience can be built upon, and I am looking forward to the completion of this project. There are many more positive works 04

Captain s Column going on around the golf course. The various committees and staff of the club are constantly working and looking for areas where we can continue to improve your golfing experience. However, there are still some areas which can only be done with your participation. Simple initiatives like repairing pitch marks, replacing divots and raking bunkers can make a notable difference in your golfing experience. These are small, but important last mile initiatives which need your commitment, as they have a significant impact on the health of our golf course. Remember to bring your sand bottles with you, and also arm yourself with a pitch repairer. Together, we can continue to make golfing at an enjoyable experience. Lastly, our flagship event, the Open for both the men and ladies took place in May 2015. This year s Sembawang Country Club Open had received the highest levels of applications and registrations we have ever seen. We also saw the highest levels of interests from the sponsors, with every single tournament hole-in-one backed up by mouth-watering prizes from a luxury yacht to a car. The ladies day saw almost 200 ladies from both SCC and other country clubs participate, culminating in a retro-themed dinner where the ladies turned up in their resplendent colours and retro outfits. For the men s day, the weather was not kind to us. However, it did not dampen any of our participants moods. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members for their incredible support in making Open 2015 a successful event. Moving forward, let us count down to the celebration of our nation s jubilee year as the parade returns to the Padang. Till then, keep golfing, and here s wishing all blue skies and great golf ahead. Majulah Singapura! ME7 Derric Low Club Captain 05

Ladies Corner SEMBAWANG LADIES DAY 15 May 15 by Ladies Captain A record number of 200 amateur lady golfers participated in the 2015 Sembawang Ladies Day. Though the game was interrupted by an hour of Cat1, 90% of the ladies participants managed to complete the game. Ms Natasha Wong clinched the Champion Trophy at 81 gross. Unfortunately the Hole-In-One prizes was left untouched! Let s come back 2 years later to grab them! 06

Ladies Corner The dinner theme was RETRO and all decked in fashion of yester-years, pon-pon hairdo, polka dot, stripes and dolly dresses! But hey, that s the order of the night! All had a ball of a good time with the lively and comical emcee that kept them rocking through the night. The Best Retro Dressed went to Ms Annabelle Cheong and The Grand Lucky Draw prize was won by Ms Emin Ong. The Organising Committee would like to thank all who have participated and contributed in making the Ladies Day a splendid and successful event of the year! 07

Greens Talk On March 2015, a total of 12 players from Sutera Harbour Resort visited Sembawang Country Club and was hosted by our Club Captain and GC members on Sunday 3rd May 2015. Lunch preceded the golf game which was blessed with fine weather. Friendly wagers forged stronger camaraderie and friendship amongst the members of both clubs. There was more merry making during dinner followed by a karaoke session at the lounge. The handsome duo from both teams All smiles during lunch hour A well-deserved break after the intense competition Say cheese! 08

Golf Tips Sourced by Mr Gilbert Tan With permission from Golf Digest How To Escape The Tough Lies Use these 3 bunker drills to help get it out BY JASON GUSS WITH RON KASPRISKE PHOTOS BY J.D. CUBAN January 2011 You probably already know the basics of hitting a greenside bunker shot: Dig in your feet, play the ball forward of center in your stance, open the clubface before gripping the club, and make contact with the sand an inch and a half behind the ball. But certain bunker lies require a little extra effort to get the ball on the green. I ll show you a few of my favorite feel drills to help you escape when your ball is on a steep upslope, a downslope, or in wet sand. Practice these drills, and then remember the feels when you play. You ll be the best bunker player in your foursome. 1. SEVERE UPSLOPE TOSS SAND OVER YOUR SHOULDER With the ball on an upslope in a bunker, the common mistake is to swing as if it were on a flat lie. That causes the club to bury in the sand after impact, and the ball barely moves. Instead, angle your body so your shoulders, hips and eyeline are parallel to the slope--digging your back foot into the sand more than your front foot will help. Play the ball more forward in your stance, and make sure you still hit behind it (above, left). Don t stop at impact: Swing through the sand to a full finish. A great drill is to make swings on an upslope in the sand without a ball. Try to throw some sand over your left shoulder (above, right). This will ingrain the feeling of swinging up the slope, rather than sticking the clubhead into it. 12

TAKE A WALK Just like on the uphill bunker shot, you have to match your shoulders, hips and eyeline to the slope--digging in your front foot more than your back will help. Play the ball in the middle of your stance, and hinge your wrists early in the backswing. Then swing the clubhead down the slope, contacting the sand behind the ball (right, top). Miss any one of these steps, and you ll likely skull it over the green. To get a feel for this shot, practice on a downslope, swinging through the sand without a ball. As your club contacts the sand, release your back leg, as if you re about to walk down the hill (right, bottom). This will help keep your clubhead going with the slope. Golf Tips 3. WET SAND BLAST THE POKER CHIP The heaviness of wet sand prevents you from playing a standard bunker shot. Instead of a U-shape swing, you need more of a V, where the clubhead enters the sand closer to the ball and takes less sand (below, left). Set about 70 percent of your weight on your front foot, and position the ball just forward of center in your stance. Open the face of your wedge slightly, and hinge your wrists abruptly going back. To help you master this shot, drop a poker chip or similar object in wet sand, and practice hitting it out (below, right). Because of the chip s light weight and low profile, you can t hit too far behind it or dig too deep and still get it out. TAKE A CLINIC EVERY MONTH To see Jason Guss and other top teachers demonstrate their best tips, sign up for the Golf Digest Clinic video series. You ll get an hour of instruction from a new teacher monthly. Guss covers the short game. Price: $9.99 a month, and you can opt out at any time. Click here to get started. JASON GUSS is lead instructor for the Rick Smith Golf Academy in Gaylord, Mich. 13

Club Events On 15-16 May, we held our bi-annual SCC Open 2015! The event spanned over two days: one for the gentlemen, and another for the ladies to showcase their golfing skills and compete to win attractive prizes! The event saw a significant number of participants, with more than 450 contestants in total. Unfortunately, due to CAT 1 interruptions, the golf games could not be completed, thus the participants partook in social games instead. All things considered, the SCC Open 2015 was a success, as each team displayed camaraderie and exhibited unbeatable team spirit during the games. The event concluded with a retro dinner night for the ladies, who livened the banquet hall with their dazzling retro outfits, while the gentleman had their own dinner, chatting and drinking to their hearts content. 14

Club Events Thank you to all participants who have joined us in our Children s Camp held on 2 to 4 Jun 2015! I hope you have enjoyed the fun and exciting activities! On the first day, the kids visited The Rock School at Bedok Community Centre for a session of rock climbing and team-building activities. They also learnt how to tie knots that held them during their climb! On the second day, they visited the Gallop Stable for a Stable Tour. The kids got to learn how horses are stabled, the type of bedding they sleep on, how the stables are cleaned and the type of equipment used. They were given a chance to have a hands-on grooming experience on a pony. The activity ended with a pony ride around the riding arena and fed the donkeys while awaiting for their turn. The day ended with a campfire at night at the Viewing Deck in our Club. On the last day of the camp, there were team building activities and pool activities before the camp ended with a closing ceremony. Hope to see you again at the next camp! Club Events The Committee & Staff Cohesion Golf game was held on 15 June 2015 at our club. The event facilitated friendly golf games between both groups, spurring social interactions and healthy competition. The golf games provided an opportunity for both committee members and staff to strengthen their relations, foster new friendships, and further strengthening rapport with one another. The event concluded with a buffet barbeque dinner, and prize presentations for the lucky winners! All the staff were given tokens of appreciation for their effort and dedication towards our club s service. 18

Club Events The annual Junior & Family Swimming Meet is back, attracting families and their children to visit our country club on 27 June 2015 to participate in fun family events, such as the family relay and also for the children to compete in 30 metres junior category swimming races. Families can be seen enjoying their Saturday, soaking in the pristine, blue pool to fight the sweltering heat while bonding over team activities, cheering each other on to reach the finishing lines. The healthy competition between the children further fostered their fighting spirits and sportsmanship, with the other competitors applauding the winners during the medal ceremony. Winners!
