RHP Jake Stinnett (3-0, 2.94 ERA) vs. LHP Sean Brady (2-2, 4.70 ERA) Game #41 Home Game #21 Game vs. Hillcats #2 MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch App TuneIn MiLB.TV Lynchburg Hillcats (28-13, 14-7 Road) 1st Place, +6.0 GA, CL Northern HILLCATS RALLY TO STUN PELICANS LATE Myrtle Beach led Lynchburg 3-2 in the 9th inning, but the Hillcats rallied for three runs in the frame to win Friday s series-opener 5-3. The trio of runs surrendered by Pelicans reliever James Farris matched all of the runs he had yielded during the entire season heading into the night. The Birds scored all three of their runs in their fourth, courtesy of a wild pitch and two-run single by Gioskar Amaya, who had two hits in the effort. FRIENDS CLOSE, ENEMIES CLOSER While Friday s 5-3 defeat to Lynchburg was a tough one to swallow, it was also a close game that has become much of a theme for the Pelicans in 2016. Myrtle Beach has played a league-high 31 games decided by three runs or less. Considering nearly every team across baseball finishes at or around.500 in close games throughout a season, it is not all that surprising that the Birds have posted a 17-14 record in these contests. Of the nine other games, Myrtle Beach s largest margin of victory is eight runs, while their worst defeat has come only by six runs. Winston-Salem is right behind them in the close games department, having played 29 contests decided by three runs or less. The Dash are 10-19 in games decided by no more than three runs. TRENDING UPWARDS? With Thursday s 4-3 triumph over Winston-Salem, the Pelicans scored their third straight series victory. Myrtle Beach has taken four of the last five sets they ve played. However, the combined records of those clubs (Winston-Salem, Wilmington and Frederick) is just 46-68 (.404). The Pelicans fell 5-3 Friday in their first true test, schedule-wise, in May. Lynchburg, the Birds opponent for the next three games, is 28-13 (.683) start en route to a first place sitting in the Northern Division. Following their four-game set against Lynchburg, Myrtle Beach heads to Carolina for three games before hosting Wilmington for four, teams with a 28-52 (.350) combined mark. CHICKS ON THE ROAD DIG THE LONG BALL The Pelicans bopped six home runs in their series at Frederick, their most in a series since popping eight at the Keys from August 21-23 of last season. This season, Myrtle Beach has blasted 16 homers on the road, compared to just 10 at TicketReturn. Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark, one of which was an inside-thepark home run. Over the last two seasons, Pelicans hitters have whacked 55 roundtrippers on the road, with just 37 at home. IT IS HOW YOU START A one-run, 5.1 inning performance by Jeremy Null on Friday was one of many great starting pitching outings Myrtle Beach has received of late. Over the last 34 games, Pelican starters have ceded three earned runs or fewer in an outing 27 times. During that span, Myrtle Beach lid-lifters have combined for a 2.90 ERA (61 ER in 189.0 IP). Birds starting pitchers have surrendered only 162 hits (7.7 H/9) during that span, while walking 56 (2.7 BB/9) against 140 strikeouts (6.7 K/9). WALK, DON T RUN Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein has talked extensively about his philosophy of controlling the strike zone from both sides of the ball. In 2016, it is clear that that mantra has made it all the way down throughout the system. The Birds have made it 14 of the last 19 games in which they have issued no more than three free passes, and Pelicans pitchers have walked only 115 batters in 348.0 innings (3.0 BB/9), the fewest of any team in the Carolina League - and one of the biggest reasons why the club has surrendered the fewest runs in the circuit. MEN OF STEAL For the first time in 13 games Saturday, a Pelicans base runner was caught stealing, snapping a string of 23 straight successful stolen base attempts. However, Myrtle Beach is still 30-for-theirlast-34 in stolen base attempts in their last 16 games, vaulting into second in the league in swipes. The Birds are 54-for-69 in their stolen base attempts, good for a 78.2% success rate, and much better than their 66.7% mark more than two weeks ago. A BIG LEAGUE FIRST In lieu of firing manager Fredi Gonzalez, the Atlanta Braves announced former Pelicans skipper Brian Snitker was named the club s interim manager - the first former Myrtle Beach pilot to manage in The Show. Snitker was the first manager in the history of the Pelicans, guiding the club to a 238-179 (.571) record in three seasons from 1999-2001. He led Myrtle Beach to the Mills Cup Co-Championship in 1999 before winning it all solely in 2000. Snitker won his first Major League game Wednesday in the Braves 3-1 win at Pittsburgh. PELICAN POINTS Prior to Friday s 5-3 defeat, Myrtle Beach hadn t lost a games decided by no more than two runs since two straight 4-3 losses to Salem on 4/29 and 4/30. vs. THE HILLCATS 2016 vs. Hillcats...0-1 in Myrtle Beach...0-1 in Lynchburg...0-0 All-Time vs. Lynchburg...177-160 (.525) 2015 Regular Season vs. Lynchburg...10-7 in Myrtle Beach...6-4 in Lynchburg...4-3 PELICANS BY THE NUMBERS Record...22-18 Current Streak...L1 Runs Scored... 160 (4.0 per game)/6th Runs Allowed... 140 (3.5 per game)/fewest Run Differential...+22/3rd Pythagorean Record...22-18 Southern Division Standing/GB...2nd/6.5 Current Standings Streak... 2nd, 32 days Long Standings Streak... 2nd, 32 days (4/18-present) Batting Average/Rank....247/5th On-Base Percentage....330/4th Slugging Percentage....383/4th OPS....713/4th Hits... 317/5th Doubles...67/7th Triples... 15/3rd Home Runs... 26/T-2nd Stolen Bases...54/2nd Defensive Efficiency (MLB avg: ~.705)....704 Errors...36 ERA...3.08/1st Strikeouts... 296/5th Walks...115/Fewest Hits Allowed... 318/2nd-Fewest Home Runs...19/2nd-fewest WHIP...1.24/1st Starters W-L...19-13 Starters ERA...3.15 Bullpen W-L...3-5 Bullpen ERA...2.97 Saves/Opps...15 SV / 19 SVO Best Homestand... 3-1 (4/21-4/24) Worst Homestand...0-2 (4/29-4/30) Best Road Trip...4-3 (2x; 5/2-5/8) Worst Road Trip...1-1 (4/26-4/27) Gioskar Amaya: Reached in 9 of last 11G (10-for-35,.286 AVG,.359 OBP) Jeffrey Baez: Hits in three straight (5-for-12, 2 BB, 3 R, 2 multi-hit games) Yasiel Balaguert: 11-for-33 (.333) with 4 HR and 11 RBIs in last 8G (1-for-24 in previous 7G) Cael Brockmeyer: Reached in 12 of 13 games (11-for-43,.256, 3 HR, 9 RBIs,.319 OBP) Charcer Burks: Reached in 13 of last 16 games (12-for-51,.235, 2B, 3B, 2 HR,.339 OBP) Rashad Crawford: Hits in six of last nine (8-for-28,.286, 4 2B, 3 RBIs,.333 OBP) BIRDS NEST NUGGETS Shawon Dunston Jr.: Hits in seven of last 11 games (12-for-34,.353, 2 2B, 3B,.405 OBP) Ian Happ: Eight-game on-base streak (7-for-28,.254, 2 2B, 3B,.382 OBP) Daniel Lockhart: Hits in 12 of his last 17 games (21-for-60,.350, HR, 7 multi-hit contests) Trey Martin: Four-game hitting streak snapped Monday (6-for-15,.400, 2B, 2 RBIs) Gleyber Torres:.337/.378/.538 line with 3 HR and 12 RBIs in last 23 games (9 multi-h G) Jason Vosler: 2-for-16 in last five games (351/.405/.486 with 8 2B, 2 3B, HR and 12 RBIs in prev. 31) UPCOMING PROBABLE STARTING PITCHERS AND GAME TIMES DATE TIME OPPONENT PELICANS STARTER OPP.
