Tour Overview This is a unique trip through Morocco, from the mountains of the Anti-Atlas to the fascinating Merzouga sand dunes. It includes almost 400 kilometres of cycling over 5 stages. It all starts with a crossing of the Jbel Saghro Range Mountain and its high passes, and then follows through an impressive landscape which stuns with its diversity and majesty of colours and scenery. We will ride though small local communities where we can overnight or just stop for a simple cup of tea - an authentic, meaningful ritual in this country. We will follow our route through the loneliness of the most famous desert in the world, going first over stony tracks until we reach the hypnotic sand dunes of the Sahara. This is a world-class trip that PA-Cyclism has run every year since 2005 and is organized not just for hard-core mountain bike enthusiasts, but also for all those who want top experience an unforgettable adventure in a safe and comfortable way. Friends and family can accompany cyclists and do some trekking over easy footpaths, following the same tracks the riders will be cycling and visit the villages we will go through along the way. At the end of the bike tour we will return to Marrakech having the opportunity to enjoy this bustling, one of a kind town.
Stage Descriptions and Itinerary April 25, 2015: Marrakech Arrival of all participants in Marrakech and transfer to the hotel. Bike check and briefing with the organizing team. April 26, 2015: Marrakech - Boumane du Dades Transfer to Boumane du Dades. On the route we will visit the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou and drive trough the spectacular Tizi n'tichka pass. Overnight in a small hotel. April 27, 2015: Boumane du Dades - Bab'n'Ali 1 st Stage - Kilometers 60 - Elevation 1,000 metres 2500 Elevazione (m) 2000 1500 1000 0.0 10.0 20.0 30.0 40.0 50.0 59.07 Distanza (km) The first stage of the tour starts in Boulmaine du Dades, where another great trip of ours ends: The Atlas Bike Maroc. We decided to design a route that doesn't go straight to the heart of the Sahara. Rather, will reach the desert through a natural door. In the first part of the day we will pass through some small Berber villages before starting our climb towards the Tizi 'n Tazazert pass, leaving the Jabel Saghro range behind us.
April 28, 2015: Bab'n'Ali - Zaouia Tafechna 2 nd Stage - Kilometers 85 - Elevation 600 metres 1600 Elevazione (m) 1400 1200 1000 800 0.0 10.0 20.0 30.0 40.0 50.0 60.0 70.0 84.19 Distanza (km) The stage starts and runs for about thirty kilometers in a large valley. The Saharan landscape becomes more and more consistent though we still pass through a lot of small berber villages constructed on the banks of the dry river beds. The final part of today s stage will lead us over a hill that rises gradually over a gorge of extraordinary beauty. A long descent with numerous dry river crossings will bring us to Zaouia Tafechna where we will stay for the night. April 29, 2015: Zaouia Tafechna - Hammadas 3 rd Stage - Kilometres 75 - Elevation 500 metres 1200 Elevazione (m) 1000 800 600 0.0 10.0 20.0 30.0 40.0 50.0 60.0 74.34 Distanza (km) Today s stage is fairly flat and will head towards Zagora through a more desolate and desert landscape. We can see and feel the Sahara s presence more and more but Merzouga is still far away. The heat will increase but will remain bearable and our organization s vehicles and guides will take care of everything. Together we will reach a beautiful private berber house where we will spend the night and enjoy a wonderful dinner of cous-cous and tagine.
April 30, 2015: Hammadas - Tafraoute 4 th Stage - Kilometres 68 - elevation 300 metres 900 Elevazione (m) 800 700 600 0.0 10.0 20.0 30.0 40.0 50.0 60.0 68.08 Distanza (km) The ride starts to get more difficult and we finally meet the first sand dunes of the trip: Welcome to the Sahara Desert. We leave earlier than usual this morning to reach our destination before the heat begins to take its toll. The more skilled riders can attempt to ride over long strips of sand. Otherwise there will be no option than to get off the bike and push for short distances. Our direction continues eastward where the big dunes are waiting for us. In the afternoon, there will be time for a nice rest in the shade on beds with fresh linen, savoring the peace and quiet of Africa. May 1, 2015: Tafraoute - Merzouga 5 th Stage - Kilometres 30+15 - Elevation 300 metres 700 Elevazione (m) 650 600 550 0.0 5.0 10.0 15.0 20.0 27.17 Distanza (km)

We leave before sunrise, the path illuminated by our headlamps. The only sounds to accompany us will be the crowing of the roosters and the Mujaidin call to prayer. After about 30 kilometres we will reach the large, perfectly flat surface of an old dry lake. To enjoy the sunrise here is a unique, magical experience. We will have breakfast while staff load the bikes on the vehicles. May 2, 2015: Merzouga - Marrakech Transfer Merzouga - Marrakech (about 12 hours). At about 15:00-17:00, depending on the pace, the stage will end: it is time to rest and regenerate. After dinner, the Organization holds a briefing on the next stage. End the day chatting about the day s ride. Very Important! The places where the entire route will be developed are wild, there are no cities but small communities. It is not guaranteed you will have the opportunity to to wash (hot water) on some stages. For this reason it is recommended that each participant, in addition to the joy of cycling, brings with it a great sense of adventure, adaptability and collaboration. The grandeur of the landscape will reward the labors as the days will pass. The organization will provide all their experience, so you can enjoy the maximum comfort throughout the expedition. The organizers reserve the right to change the route during the tour to safeguard the safety of all participants. Support: Depending on the size of the group there will be at least one support vehicle. The support vehicle will carry all of your luggage and extra gear as well as snacks and water. It can also carry you and your bike if you feel like taking a break or in case of emergency.
Travel Documents: Each participant must be in possession of their passport which must be valid for six months from the date of departure. Prophilaxis: No particular vaccination is required, although it is better to be covered with anti-tetanus. Medical Assistance: Throughout the trip we will have a well-stocked first-aid bag. Despite this, we suggest each of you not leave without their stock of personal medicine. If anyone is allergic to a particular medicine or food, please to notify this to the organization. Companions: The trail is one of the most beautiful and spectacular you can see in Morocco. Conscious of this we offer the opportunity to participate not only as a cyclist, but also as an alternative traveler. People who are accompanying ther riders will be provided easy trekking along the same trail of the cyclists or in the villages they passed through. In this way we are sure to satisfy all those who want to try this adventure cycling, but they have also fill all the expectations of those who are not mountain biker but still want to be part of an expedition like ours.

We will find fresh temperature just the first two days when we are still riding in the Atlas Mountain, otherwise the weather will be quite hot and sunny with possible strong winds. During the day on a bike is recommended to always keep very well hydrated. It is necessary to use moisturizer for the face and to protect against UV. Mechanical Assistance: Everyone is responsible for their own repair of flat tires, cleaning of the chain or other mechanical problems. So it's essential that everyone brings with him a kit for repairs. Each participant can bring spare parts from home, that the organization will carry on the vehicle and give to the rider at the end of the stages. In any case the organization will help anytime it will be possible. The organizer will not be held liable for bike damage as a result of improper packing, maintenance or transportation, accidents, or whatever other reason. The rider will take responsibility for incurred rental costs and you will not be compensated for possible lost riding time. Which Kind of Mountain Bike: This is of course a very subjective and difficult topic. First of all, you don t need the latest mountain bike. Full suspension bikes are really useful, especially in the downhill sections. Front suspension are lighter but require a a higher level of handling and concentration. Suggested tires: 2.0/2.2. The brakes: it s not important which kind of system you use, they must be fully operational. If you do not want to carry a backpack, we recommend a little rear carrier. In any case the bike needs to be in perfect condition and recently checked by your mechanic. We are big fan of 29ers.
How to pack the bike: Your bike must be packed in special bags or boxes. Remove the wheels. Deflate the tires. Disassemble the rear derailleur and wrap it in something soft.
