Jonathan Hernandez LHP...9 Under Nakama, the Spartans posted the fourth-highest batting average (.8), the third-highest fielding percentage (.9) and the second-fewest errors (8) in the Western Athletic Conference in and the second-highest fielding percentage (.9) in the Mountain West in. Nakama came to San José State from the University of Washington, where he was the associate head baseball coach for three seasons. In a -plus year college coaching career, the Honolulu, Hawai'i, native has seasons of experience in the Pac- Conference divided between Washington (-) and Stanford (99-98, -9). A proven talent developer, Nakama has seen 9 of his former players drafted professionally. Of those, have gone on to play in the major leagues, including current big-leaguers Jason Castro, John Mayberry Jr., Carlos Quentin and Jed Lowrie. Four times from -9, Baseball America rated Stanford's recruiting classes in the top nationally. Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball ranked Washington's class among the best in the West. In his seasons at Stanford, the Cardinal won four Pac- Championships, five NCAA Regional crowns and appeared in the College World Series four times (99,,, and 8). During Nakama's tenure, Stanford recorded their five best defensive seasons, including a program high.9 fielding percentage in. Nakama has head coaching experience at San Jose's Mission College (99-9) and three seasons at San Francisco State (999-). In five seasons at Mission College, his teams qualified for the 99 and 99 California Community College state championships. He was the 99 Coast Conference Coach of the Year. The 98 graduate of Willamette University in Salem, Ore., earned his master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 98. As a college player, Nakama was an infielder for the Willamette Bearcats. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Northern Colorado in 98 and worked at the University of Iowa, Yavapai College (Prescott, Ariz.) and DeAnza College. Bautista hit.8 (- for-) and reached base safely in all eight games during the month of February. He drew seven walks and had three multi-hit games, including two three-hit performances. NEW FACES ALL AROUND San José State fields one of the youngest teams in the country in. Two transfer juniors, Ozzy Braff (Whitman College) and Dillan Smith (Palomar Community College), join a - man freshman class, of which have seen action this season. The San Mateo, Calif., resident and Serra High School product owns a.8 career batting average in 8 at-bats with a.99 fielding percentage patrolling the outfield. A second-team All-Mountain West selection after making all starts that season, Mercurio was hampered by a wrist injury in that forced him to miss games early in the year and limited him to just starts. Mercurio and Kalei Contrades represent the only players on the roster in their fourth year at San José State. Myles Richard, the third senior on the Spartans, transferred from Mount Hood Community College before the season. CONTRADES EARNS PAIR OF PRESEASON AWARDS Senior right-hander Kalei Contrades was one of two pitchers to be named to the Mountain West Preseason All-Conference Team, as voted on by the conference's head coaches, in addition to being selected to the Perfect Game Preseason All-Mountain West team. Contrades is coming off a stellar junior campaign in which he appeared in games, making seven starts, and posted a - record with a. ERA in 9. innings. TOM KUNIS RETURNS TO SAN JOSÉ STATE AS PITCHING COACH Tom Kunis, an assistant on former skipper Sam Piraro's staff from 988-9 and 9-, returns for a third stint and an eighth season with the Spartans in. Kunis and head coach Dave Nakama coached together for six seasons (-) at Stanford under Mark Marquess, where the pair aided the Cardinal to two Pac- conference titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances, including three Super Regional appearances and two College World Series berths. In his 8 years of coaching, of Kunis' pitchers have been drafted professionally. SPARTANS TESTED EARLY AND OFTEN IN Six of San José State s opponents Cal Poly, Stanford, UC Irvine, UNLV, Oregon State and San Diego State received regional berths last season.
